The Common Room / FindMyPast burials - How old was he?
« on: Friday 27 March 15 16:30 GMT (UK)  »
Can FindMyPast subscribers help me here please? George Chapple was buried 16 September 1837 in West Buckland, Devon. His burial record is shown on FindMyPast with his age transcribed as 63. However looking at other 3s and 8s written by the same curate on that page it looks more like 68 to me.

What do you think?

Europe / Thomas Farmer born in Boulogne
« on: Friday 19 December 14 17:13 GMT (UK)  »
I also have a family who lived in Boulogne sur Mer and wonder if you could help me find out anything about them.

I have Thomas Farmer born in Boulogne 8 January 1841 and christened 21 February 1841. According to the Actes de naissances his father was called George, born about 1795, and his mother was Emma Wilson, born about 1811. George was a brush maker. They had another son James born in Boulogne 27 October 1842 and I'm told another son Charles born there sometime in 1844. Although Thomas returned to London and married in 1865 I know nothing more about George and Emma. They may have had children in South London before going to France but that's it. Can you help please?

Derbyshire / Caroline Garlick born 1822 Hadfield
« on: Tuesday 16 December 14 14:06 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out what happened to Caroline who was baptised 2 July 1822 in Glossop the daughter of Joseph and Sophia. I can find no mention of her after that.

She had 2 sisters, Hannah and Martha born in 1816 and 1824 respectively, who also "disappeared" after birth and don't appear in any censuses so I'd be interested in them too. I expect they died young although I can find no burials but if they somehow survived, with such common names, I'm not expecting much joy there. Martha and her younger sister Sophia (1832) were baptised at the Wesleyan Methodist chapel, Hadfield. Sophia junior died in 1854.

Any help would be much appreciated.

What exactly does infant mean in a burial register? Does it mean they were under 12 months and no older?

Lancashire / Was Mary really a stepdaughter?
« on: Saturday 24 May 14 11:23 BST (UK)  »
I have good reason to believe Mary Clayton born 1821 in Culcheth nr Winwick is "mine" but I cannot understand why she is shown in the censuses as the stepdaughter of a Thomas Taylor.

Mary is the daughter of William and Betty Clayton bpd in Winwick on 6 May 1821 and unless I am mistaken she can be found in the censuses as living in Croft with her sister Ellen bn 1825, both of them described as stepdaughters of Thomas Taylor together with various children described as daughters - that is except for 1871 when they are cousins. I can't find a marriage between Thomas and Betty Clayton so what is going on? Now I can accept that Mary most probably was living as Thomas' wife but why describe her as stepdaughter? Bear in mind she is living with her sister and next door is the grandmother in law of her brother.

Derbyshire / Hannah Booth of Ollersett?
« on: Thursday 15 May 14 14:29 BST (UK)  »
I have been tracing Mary Booth bn about 1787 who married firstly John Sandham in 1806 at All Saints, Glossop, and then, after his death, James Alsop in 1825 only to be widowed again in 1847.

In 1851 she declared she was born at Hollinhurst Head which is just south of Birch Vale where she and John had their family and in 1861 she said Ollersett so I have been looking at the Hayfield registers finding a very good contender in one entry which states on 25 December 1787 "Mally Daughter to Hannah Booth baptized BB". I'm pretty sure this is her but when I looked for Hannah's parents I came unstuck.

One clue I thought would help was that Mary's grandson John Sandham was lodging with a Hannah Booth in Glossop in 1861. Aha! I thought - a relative perhaps! Hannah's father was Charles Booth born about 1783 in Glossop so if Hannah was from the Ollersett area maybe they were not that closely related. Anyway I haven't found his baptism so can't make a connection there.

Another possible clue or probably a red herring comes from the 1841 census which showed that a George Stafford, stone mason, was the occupant of Hollinhurst Head - probably son of Obadiah of Mellor. Now Mary's sister in law was an Elizabeth Stafford, daughter of Uriah also of Mellor, and wife of John's brother James Sandham who lived in Thornsett. John Sandham was buried in Mellor in 1823. But that is as far as that line of enquiry has gone.

So, I am wondering whether fresh eyes can help me please?

Derbyshire / Joseph Garlick of Hadfield, postmaster. I've had to admit defeat!
« on: Sunday 20 April 14 11:48 BST (UK)  »
I've been trying to find the death/burial of Joseph Garlick who was letter receiver from 1848 and then postmaster in Hadfield until sometime between 1851 and 1861 when the census reveals his son William had taken over the job.

I have the death certificate of Joseph's wife Sophia in 1859 where she is described as wife of Joseph, postmaster, so he was still alive then. I ordered it from Derbyshire record office and spoke to a really helpful lady who looked at all the Joseph Garlick deaths she had access to but she said none could be mine by virtue of their ages. She did suggest looking over the border into Cheshire - maybe he'd gone to live with one of his children who'd moved away - but I've had no luck.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

England / James Castick
« on: Wednesday 22 January 14 12:07 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help please in finding the baptism of James Castick born around 1804? He is particularly difficult to trace because, by dying in 1850 in Glossop, Derbyshire, apparently aged 46, his only appearance in the censuses is in 1841 where he is shown not to have been born in that county.

Not only that, his name is given as Capstick although he married as Castick and that is the name used everywhere else and by his children. So could he have been baptised as Capstick in another county?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
