West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / Questions regarding an OPR Baptism record in Abercorn
« on: Tuesday 19 November 19 00:05 GMT (UK)  »
I've just downloaded some OPR Baptism records for the Meikle family in Abercorn in the 1730's and there are a couple of things that I need help with.

Firstly, the father, Alexander Meikle, was shown as a Tenent in Dundervie (possibly Dunlervie). I'm assuming that meant he was a tenant farmer but where/what was Dundervie.

Secondly, on the record for their first son Robert (1731), he is described as "their first son of the second marriage". Does this mean that one of the parents had been married before or is there another meaning. None of the records for their subsequent children included a reference to their marriage.

Thanks,

Lancashire / Looking for Stephen Ramsay Brown
« on: Thursday 07 November 19 01:58 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find any information on a Stephen Ramsay Brown whose death was registered in the Blackpool & Fylde Registration District in September of 1997.

He was born in the Spalding area of Lincolnshire in October 1925, two sources give the actual date as the 13th or the 30th.

The last information I have on him is from the 1939 Register which shows him living in Hendon, Middlesex with his parents Septimus Ramsay Brown & Hilda Sophia Humphrey. Various sources suggest that they did not marry and that she also died in the Blackpool area. Septimus died in Lancaster in 1977.

Family rumour suggests that Stephen became a bank manager in Lancashire, possibly in Blackpool or Lancaster.

Any information would be appreciated.

Durham / Help requested to identify Callon?? Place, Southwick in 1914
« on: Wednesday 28 August 19 02:41 BST (UK)  »
I have a WW1 Army Pension Record (on Ancestry) with an attestation date of 22 August 1914 for an Owen Coggins, (born abt 1889 Sunderland).

On page 4 his nok is shown as Beatrice with an address which appears to be 3 Callon Place, Southwick. I can't find that street on Google. Can anyone help.

Also, their marriage appears to have taken place at St Patrick's, Sunderland in 1911. The only match I can find for that is in Smith Street, Ryhope. I would appreciate some help identifying the church as well please.

Durham / Greengrocer's shop in Adelaide Street, Southwick in 1851
« on: Thursday 20 June 19 00:52 BST (UK)  »
In the 1851 Census (HO107/2398 Folio 470 Page 60 Schedule 240) my ancestor George Coulthard is shown as living in Adelaide Street, Southwick, with an occupation of Shopkeeper (Greengrocer).

Can anyone tell me whether or not the premises he was living at was a shop and, if so, any other information about it.

Cheers, Doug,
Veteran, Queensland.

Postscript:

Since I originally posted this message I've found that, although George died in 1855 his wife Ann (nee Farrer) carried on the business until she diede in 1885:

1861 Ogle Terrace, Southwick (RG9/3781/31/35/198)
1871 29 Collin Place (Shop), Southwick (RG10/5018/41/42/206
1881 29 Collin Place, Southwick (RG11/5003/84/98/494

So, my second question is similar to my first. Was the address in Ogle Terrace also a shop premises.

I'm hoping someone can help me identify the parents of Susan Sparks who was born between 1829 & 1834, possibly in the Clerkenwell area.

In the 1851 Census I have an entry in the East London Union Workhouse for Ann Sparks born abt 1790 Islington and Susan Sparks born abt 1833 Clerkenwell. Between 1867 & 1876 She was in and out of the Workhouses, mostly the City Road Workhouse in St Luke. In January 1877 she was transferred from there to the Asylum at Colney Hatch where she died in November 1877 (registered in Barnet RD).

As far as I know, she had 4 children, Sarah Ann (abt 1856), Mary Ann (abt 1858), Caroline (1871) & William (1874) but she never married.

Sarah Ann was baptised at St Thomas Charterhouse in 1856 as Sarah Ann Parton or Sparks. The parents were Thomas Parton and Susan Sparks, a single woman.

Caroline and William were baptised at St Thomas Charterhouse in 1874. The parents were shown as Thomas Sparks and Susan . The were living in French Alley in Goswell Street.

Any information would be appreciated.

Would there have been a particular reason for an illegitimate birth to have been registered in both Canonbie, Dumfriesshire and Castleton, Roxburghshire.

Elizabeth Cairns was born on 28 March 1870 in Newcastleton to Jane Cairns who was living at Whinbush, Canonbie at the time.

The birth was registered in Castleton on the 11th April and in Canonbie on the 27th April. The Canonbie entry includes the date and place of the previous registration.

Dumfriesshire / Carnsdridge or Carnrodridge in Ewes??
« on: Monday 17 December 18 05:55 GMT (UK)  »
In the 1871 Scotland Census my ancestor, Elizabeth Cairns (b. 1857 Canonbie), is working as a servant at an address in Ewes.

Its transcribed as either Carnsdridge (ancestry) or Carnrodridge (findmypast).

Does anyone have any ideas as what the name actually was.

Cheers, Doug.

Dumfriesshire / RCI Dumfries ??
« on: Saturday 15 December 18 05:09 GMT (UK)  »
I have a 1954 burial record for an Agnes Jane Cairns and in the remarks column it has "Died at RCI Dumfries". Could someone tell me what RCI stood for. I'm guessing that it was an infirmary.

Cheers, Doug.

Cumberland / Location of Tollriggs in the Parish of Arthuret
« on: Wednesday 12 December 18 04:54 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone shed any light on this.

I have a baptism record for an Adam Cairns in 1868 at the Nicholforest Chapelry and the family's abode is given as Tollriggs, Parish of Arthuret. I'm guessing it's an outlying farm.

Cheers, Doug.
