Lancashire / Schools in Gorton/Openshaw 1910
« on: Wednesday 29 August 18 21:40 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

I'm trying to find what schools would have been open around 1910 in Gorton and Openshaw and if any admission logs still survive. If anyone knows where these would be stored too, it would be extremely helpful.
Thank you, Regards

World War Two / WW2 records
« on: Sunday 21 January 18 13:20 GMT (UK)  »
I'm just about to apply for my maternal grandads (& adopted dad) army records.
I am fortunate enough to have his army number and unit.

My friend would love to apply for her grandads records too but hasn't got a clue what unit he was in, never mind army number. Is there any way she could find out & still apply?

Best wishes

US Completed Requests / California Wills
« on: Sunday 24 September 17 17:14 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for a will of a person who died 1951 in California. At the minute I don't know where she died or how to look for the will.

Does anybody know how/where to find the information? Thanks in advance.

Could anyone help with dating these photos. I know who the woman is in pic 4. She (Bella) lived 1884 to 1959. These others are her relatives but I don't know if they're siblings or parents.

Thank you in advance

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Mirfield
« on: Saturday 14 February 15 11:24 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know of any links for Mirfield?

I have a bit of a dilema.
1861 census Mirfiled:-
Charlotte Oates 64
Jackson Oates 16
Henry Oates 13
Abraham Jackson 44

Same family 1851 census still in Mirfield
Charlotte Drake 53
Jackson Drake 6
Henry Drake 3
Abraham Jackson 34

I have the marriage details for both children. Jackson states his father is Abraham Jackson and Henry puts his mother in the fathers bit (never seen that before).

My problem is why the name change? I cannot find a marriage and both boys christenings are in the name Oates?

I'm puzzled, any ideas?
Thank you in advance to anyone who is willing to help.

United States of America / How to apply for a will?
« on: Monday 19 January 15 18:29 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know how to apply for a will from the UK?

Adeline Wright Kynaston died 1951 in Los Angeles, California and left an estate to be shared by our family. I would like to apply for a copy of the will but haven't tried to get records from the USA before.
Thanks in advance

World War Two / Is this his army number?
« on: Thursday 28 February 08 17:01 GMT (UK)  »
I have a document of my grandfathers from WW2. Due to his common name (William Henry Cooper) it is difficult to get his records. I cannot ask him, he passed away years ago.

Can anyone confirm that this is his army number? Im also not sure how many numbers there should be as it fades a little towards the end? ( 14394137? )

The Common Room / Advice needed
« on: Thursday 28 February 08 09:41 GMT (UK)  »
I was having a look around yesterday and came across one of my ancestors. I looked and found it was on a tree which contained all my aunt/Uncles cousins including myself and this guy has even had the cheek to put on a baby that i lost to cot death.

I don't know him from Adam and cant see how his tree meets with mine anyway. The thing is, he doesn't have permission from me or any of the family to have this information.

I think i know who he got the info from and i have addressed that problem, but what do i do with the guy now he has all this info? To say I'm pi**ed off is an understatement.

Best wishes

Lancashire / I need a bright brain for help
« on: Wednesday 16 January 08 10:23 GMT (UK)  »
I have followed my grandfathers ancestry as follows.

Grandad - William Henry Cooper 1909-1981
born 15/1/1909 Newton in Makerfield to parents William Henry Cooper and Annie Higham.

G Grandfather William Henry Cooper married Annie Higham 25/4/1908 Earlestown. His father listed as Jacob Cooper, Stoker

1901 census RG13/3574/9/10 Jacob and William worked at sugar works

GG grandfather William Henry Cooper born 27/1/1878 17 Denby Street, Newton in Makerfield. Parents Jacob Cooper and Mary Jane formerly Atkinson.

Mary neglected to put on the birth certificate that she had been married twice previously.

Jacob Cooper married Mary Jane Pownall 9/10/1876 St. Peter , Newton in Makerfield Mary's father Thomas Atkinson, joiner

1881 census RG11/3786/81/36

Mary married John Pownal in 1872 and he died in 1874.

Her first marriage was to John Kynaston in 1860.

1871 census RG10/3867/8/9
1861 census RG9/2743/19/37

In 1861 census Mary is living with her parents Thomas Atkinson and Ann.

Although i have found Thomas and wife on both the 1851 and 1841 census, Mary is not listed on the 1851 and i cannot find her anywhere else. I also cannot find reference to her birth. I need her birth certificate to find her parents marriage.

Has anyone any suggestions on how to get further back along this line?
Thankyou in advance for helping
Best wishes
