Yorkshire (West Riding) / Is this my Richard Depledge?
« on: Monday 22 April 24 13:44 BST (UK)  »
Richard Depledge and Sara Scorer married at Darton on 14 Nov 1672. Richard was buried in Darton on 25 Mar 1721, occ labourer, residence looks like Broomhouse Green. Sarah was buried on 13 March 1728. Neither record gives age at death, but a feasible baptism for Sara is 16 Jan 1651 d/o Raphe - she would be abt 21 at marriage.
However the only Darton baptism I can find for Richard is 8 May 1658 s/o Richard, the record helpfully has his birth as 8 April, so not a late baptism. This would make him only 14 at marriage - is this likely ? Would a woman of 21 have a relationship with a 14 year old boy? Their first child was baptised 4 months after the marriage - so there might have been some pressure to get married.
Can anyone find an older Richard who would be a better fit?

Should be easy shouldn't it?
I tested with Ancestry some time ago and uploaded my raw DNA to as many sites as I could, one being MyHeritage
Every so often they email me to say I have matches, but today I got a message to say I have a close match. I looked, and the match is 665.7 cM across 21 segments, the longest being 64.1 cM.

My biggest on Ancestry is 546 cM across 16 segments, Longest segment: 115 cM. (My first cousin's daughter)

Even though Ancestry does a little pruning and is not quite comparable, my new MH match is pretty close, but I cannot identify him at all.
He has a tree with only himself in it giving his birth year. He has a surname which doesn't appear anywhere in my tree -
He's in his 20s and I'm in my 70s, so that excludes a lot of relationships. I have no children, I have one sibling who has no children, so that excludes great nephews.
I can see from shared matches that he would be related to my paternal grandfather's mother's line, so that excludes the only first cousins who could have a child in their 20s - they're on maternal side.

I can find two possible births which fit his year of birth, one has a mmn the same as his and location is better fit. The other has a different mmn, but I cannot find a marriage for parents. Possibly his father married a widow or divorcee so her surname at marriage is different from her maiden surname.
Can't find him on Electoral register, probably chose not to be on public register
So Facebook is my last resort I think!

Census and Resource Discussion / Electoral registers on FindMyPast
« on: Monday 11 December 23 09:47 GMT (UK)  »
I was writing a Christmas card this morning, when I realised I didn't have the postcode for one of my friends. So knowing the house number, street, town and county I looked her up on FindMyPast electoral registers. She was on the open register from 2002 to 2009 then decided to come off the open register. FindMyPast has included an age guide of 56 to 60, but where do they get their information from and which year is it supposed to refer to? She would have been 56 in 2009, so the age range must only apply to the last date they have records for, or so I thought
But then I looked up my own entry. There is only one year (2002) for me as we moved house in 2003 and came off the open register immediately. It gives my age range as 58 - 62, whereas I was under 50 in 2002. OH is down as 65 +, which is correct now but more than 10 years too high in 2002.
Thinking it might be more accurate with more recent records, I checked a relative who is in the same house and on open register from 2006 to 2023, It has her age range as 50 - 54, but she is now 61.
So it's a mystery where this age guide comes from.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / is this "my" Isaac Stickland?
« on: Saturday 02 December 23 10:31 GMT (UK)  »
My Isaac Stickland was baptised  on 16th June 1793 in Christchurch s/o Thomas - no mother named on baptism record. I can't find any trace of him in Christchurch after that.

But in the 1841 census an Isaac Stickland of the right sort of age pops up as a smith in Carisbrooke IOW. Unfortunately he died before the 1851 census so I have no place of birth apart from Hampshire. In his will of 1846 he names his only child, a daughter called Susanna Matilda Stickland. Susanna married Frederick Arnold s/o James Arnold in 1846 in Carisbrooke. Frederick died in 1847 and Susanna married John Major (inland revenue officer) in 1848.
It looks like Isaac married Maria Wood in Northwood on 12 Jan 1818. It looks like Maria must have died before 1841 census.

Can anyone help prove or disprove that the Isaac on the IOW is my Isaac, please. Note: I have found my family as both Stickland and Strickland

The Common Room / Multiple dates of Birth
« on: Thursday 16 November 23 10:57 GMT (UK)  »
In the past (post 1837) did people not know their actual date of birth even though they should have a birth certificate, or not care whether they gave accurate information.
Nowadays it seems you have to quote your date of birth on everything. A few years ago I had to state my date of birth four times in one hospital out-patients visit - twice to the same person a few minutes apart without leaving the treatment room in between.

My paternal grandmother's date of birth according to her birth certificate was 5th April 1885, according to 1939 register 7th April (which presumably would be the date on her later NHS record) and she always celebrated her birthday on 8th April.

My maternal grandfather was born on 30th September 1892 (according to birth Certificate), but is recorded as 25th September on 1939 register.

Both birth registrations were well within 42 days of birth.

So if either of these grandparents had to state their DOB when receiving NHS treatment, their actual DOB, or what they believed to be their DOB, wouldn't match their medical records.

I have found several people in 1939 reg, who have a DOB exactly 1 year out, but to be just a few days is puzzling

Modified
My grandmother's DOB according to the BC copy my aunt sent for when my grandmother went into a care home said 5th April, so that is what she told the registrar when she registered grandma's death. But I've just bought a digital BC and that says the eighth, but it is not all that clear and could be read as fifth. But even if the original BC matches the date she celebrated her birthday, why does the 1939 register say the 7th? We shall never know.!

Technical Help / Latest Windows 10 update 19 Oct 2023
« on: Friday 20 October 23 09:26 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone else had problems with the most recent update? Desktop PC can't get any further than 20 per cent. Left it for 9 hours yesterday, then in desperation switched off. Switching off could only be achieved by switching off at socket, the PC would not respond to any keyboard controls. This morning when switching on it tried to start update again. Could not roll back to previous settings as it said it was more than two weeks ago, but managed to pause this update, but only for a limited time.
If anyone has had similar problems and solved them, I would be very grateful to know what they did.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / How is Henrietta Lane related to the Strides
« on: Saturday 14 October 23 13:27 BST (UK)  »
Henrietta Lane was born about 1828 in King's Somborne. She married Henry Green on 4 July 1853 Portsea, her father was William. An online tree has her mother as Mary nee Norris. In 1841 Henrietta is with her father and presumed siblings. I think her mother must have died by then. In 1851 she and younger sister Ellen /Helen are with Thomas Stride and his wife Elizabeth in Romsey, they are recorded as nieces. Thomas Stride b West Tytherley married Elizabeth Norris in Romsey, so if Henrietta's mother was Mary Norris it is possible she was Elizabeth's sister.
If so this would make Henrietta the niece of Elizabeth Stride nee Norris, but no blood relative to Thomas Stride.
I have a DNA match with a descendant of Henrietta and a Common Ancestors / thrulines hint that suggests That our link is through my Stride line. Can anyone find out if Thomas and Henrietta are related other than by marriage, please

Surrey / Looking for Street children
« on: Wednesday 27 September 23 08:25 BST (UK)  »
John Street (baptised Chiddingfold 6 Dec 1751 s/o William Street and Elizabeth nee Jennings) and Mary Child ( baptised Dunsfold 28 Dec 1752 d/o Thomas Child and Mary nee Baxter) were married at Dunsfold on 08 Sep 1774. I cannot definitely find a burial for Mary but think John Street may have been buried in Dunsfold on 19 Dec 1828. Can anyone find any children for the couple please.
Mary's brother Thomas Child and John's sister Elizabeth Street married in 17 Dec 1767 at Dunsfold and later moved to Pulborough in Sussex.
