I'm not an absolute beginner at family history research but my brain has let me down! I am sure some kind Rootschatter can help.
After about 4 years of searching, I still can't find the first marriage of my g grandfather, James Brown. He was at his grandparents' home on census night 1851 in Porlock, Somerset where he was born. I cannot trace him on the 1861 census despite hours of searching. The next sighting I have of him is in 1866 when he married in St James's Parish church, Bristol, claiming to be a widower. I say "claims" because he fabricated a name for his father on this marriage certificate (he was illegitimate).
Obviously I don't know where he was between 1851 and 1866 but I have found today a marriage record of a James Brown registered in the December quarter of 1857 in Bristol 6a * on Free BMDs. I have tried looking at the original entry on Ancestry and to me it looks as though it could be 6a 80.
Can any of you good souls help with deciphering the registration number or suggest ways of finding out the correct number. I can't get to Bristol Records Office as I live too far away. As you can imagine, with the surname Brown, it is a process of elimination which is taking forever. I don't like being defeated!!
Here's hoping someone out there can help.
