The Common Room / Trying to obtain birth cert
« on: Friday 06 July 18 16:01 BST (UK)  »
It's a long story but my wife thinks she may have a long lost brother.  I have every detail of the child from Genes Reunited, Name, Mothers married name, Mothers maiden name, year he was born, 2nd quarter, volume, page, and line number.  When I tried to request a birth cert online, it asked for date of birth and of course I couldn't give the exact one.  I emailed the registry office involved and they told me to check the free BMD which ended in 1951.  Great, until you realise he was born in 1964.

I phoned the registry office today and explained my predicament.  The lady told me that I had to have a reference number and to look on the free BMD.  I told her it was pointless as it only went up to 1951.  She had no answer to that but insisted I get a reference number.

Perhaps I am being a bit stupid but surely if I have every detail necessary then they should be able to provide me with a certificate without too much trouble?  Personally I have been to registry offices and obtained certificates without all this hassle so why can't I get one this way?

Any thoughts or advice please?

Durham Lookup Requests / North Bondgate Bishop Auckland
« on: Friday 25 August 17 17:17 BST (UK)  »
Hello, can anyone give information perhaps from street directories about 60 North Bondgate in the late nineteen forties and early fifties please? My brother in law was born there illegitimately and we are trying to find out what the address was listed as?  He was born in 1949 and eventually traced his birth mother and half sister (my wife) a few years ago.  There are no confidentiality issues at all.

Thanks

Lancashire Lookup Requests / William Connolly VC
« on: Friday 12 June 15 10:17 BST (UK)  »
The Liverpool Echo had an article yesterday (12/6/15) looking for descendants of William Connolly VC who is buried in Kirkdale cemetery.  Sadly he died a pauper and is buried with eleven other poor souls. There is no stone on the grave but he is commemorated on a stone in the cemetery which has just been renovated.  He won his VC in the Indian mutiny but had to sell it at some time, probably just to survive.  Evidently he died in the workhouse 31st December 1891?

On behalf of my cousin who is a Connolly whose family lived in Kirkdale, I am hoping some of the experts can find out if this man had siblings?  He wasn't married or had children that we know of so the sibling route is probably the best way to find out if my cousins are related. Any help would much appreciated.

Thought people might be interested in this memorial to an Australian soldier located in Rake Lane Cemetery, Wallasey. Possibly a local lad who emigrated?

Hi

Can anyone give me any more information on this man please. Pte 23934 P Vallance, possibly  from the Newton Abbot area.

All I am told is that in 1918 he was a patient at the temporary military hospital at Wallasey Town Hall.

Thanks

World War Two / Cap badge
« on: Friday 11 January 13 19:54 GMT (UK)  »
Best close up of a cap badge that I can make. It is the badge on the cap of a friends father who was in the Commandos.  She is not sure if the Royal Marine Commandos or the Army?  At first glance I thought it was an engineers badge but the Royal Marine badge from a distance is similar.

Would the Royal Marines wear a cap such as this during WW2 or is he engineers before volunteering for the army commandos?  In the original photo which I have a poor copy of, he is with two other men who are wearing side hats but you can't really see their badges or other insignia.

Thanks Alan

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Eaton House
« on: Thursday 17 May 12 12:03 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone heard of Eaton House in your area?  It was some kind of Council run home in the fifties and sixties. It had a nursery or was a nursery?  It appears that children who's parents were absent for one reason or another were sent there.  Possibly it could be in the Richmond area but that is only a guess.

Any information would be gratefully received thanks.

Durham / Eaton House
« on: Thursday 17 May 12 12:00 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know of an Eaton House in your area?  It would have been going in the fifties and sixties and had a nursery of sorts.

I assume it was some kind of Council run home for children whose parents were absent for one reason or another?

I'm not even sure if it is in the Durham area and will post same on the Yorkshire board.

Thanks.
