Lancashire / Liverpool House of Help and Hostel for Women and Girls

I am helping a friend research her adoption.  We know that her birth mother was living at this institution when she was born in 1960.  The address was 162 Grove Street and she was born at the Sefton General hospital.  Her mother as from Scotland, Shotts, and the babyís was sent to a home in Dundee before being adopted through their he Scottish Episcopal Church.

I was wondering if anyone local and any memories of this place.  I have learned that it was a Magdalen home and that the records are at the archives in London.  However, I can only find one mention of it online and weíd really like to see what it looked like or to hear from from other people who hav stories about it.

Derry (Londonderry) / John Robinson and Catherine Simpson
« on: Sunday 22 April 18 08:12 BST (UK)  »

Iím here again asking for more help with Irish ancestors.

Iím in Scotland, so we have Alan Robinson born 1896 in cambusnethan, Lanarkshire although the family lived in Harthill.

His parents John Robinson and Catherine Simpson were married on the 8th if January 1891 in Dungarven, Ireland.

Iíve tried looking but canít find their marriage record.  Also, their oldest son William Simpson Robinson wasnít born in Scotland.  They also have lost a child but I canít see any record.

Johns death certificate only has a mother recorded, Martha Robinson.
Is anyone able to help with this family, Iím very interested to learn more about them .

Antrim / John Chambers and Mary Easdale
« on: Saturday 14 April 18 13:57 BST (UK)  »

I am looking for some help and advice please.
This is the first time I have looked at Irish genealogy.  I am Scottish and so I feel like I know what Iím doing with Scottish records but out of my depth with Irish ones!

I have been researching the family history of a friend who was adopted as a baby and know very little about her family apart from her mother and her grandparents names.

The family lived in Shotts in Scotland but all four of her great grandparents were from Ireland.

Iíve got a bit stuck.

This is what I know about one couple.

John Chambers marrried Mary Easdale on July 19th 1861 in Kirkinriola, Antrim (Clough).  I may not have spelled that correctly.

In 1851, according to the 1851 householders index John lived in Ballymoney, Antrim.

Their daughter Annie was born around 1866.

She married John Deans in Illinois in 1890,although they settled in Shotts.

Could anyone help me or show me where to look?

I have three other families to look for so it would be a big help.

Lancashire / Move from Warrington to Glasgow 1840/50s
« on: Sunday 27 January 13 16:47 GMT (UK)  »
I've posted on here before about my Lancashire ancesters but I'm still intrigued by them!  I'm still a bit unsure about tracing them on parish records as my ancesters are mostly Scottish and I'm not familiar with the English records.
I have Thomas Leigh and Jane Pincock in Warrington, I've found ten children born berween 1825 and 1838, my ancester being Anne wai Leigh born 1831.
I have them in Glass house row in 1841 with no father and a three month Emma Pendlebury but not sure who she is.
In 1851 Jane is in Glasgow with one son Joseph and Ann and her husband Hugh Kinney and their son.  I can't imagine why they went fom Warrington to Glasgow.  Surely Liverpool or Manchester would have been easier.  Hugh Kinney was born in Scotland although his family were from Ireland.  I was thining maybe they could have been catholics but that wouldn't be a reason to go to Glasgow surely?
I'll probably never know but if anyone has any ideas?
Also if anyone knows where the Wait comes from as that name was passed down to my great granny, Anne Wait Leigh Kinney (1900) and the Anne to me as my middle name!
Thanks very much, Caroline

Scotland / Sherrif Officer late 1700s
« on: Sunday 19 August 12 10:57 BST (UK)  »
I have found that on my 3 x Great Granny's death certificate that her father William Spence was a sherrif officer and was looking for some help finding out information about him.  I've tried googling but no luck there.
I'll tell you what info I have.

She was called marion Spence born 1809 in Carnwath, Lanarkshire.  She married Alexander Wilson in 1837 and died 1859.
Her mother was Margeret Brown and her father William Spence. I haven't been able to find marriage banns for them in the OPRs.
I want to find out what being a sherriff officer then would have meant, It might say sherrif's officer though.
Does anyone know what this would have meant and if there might be any records for him somewhere.

Thanks, Caroline

I live near Galashiels and often wander through the cemteries reading all the old inscriptions and I wondered if anyone would like me to look for a particular headstone and also take a photo.  The ones I would look in for the moment, are Eastlands and Heatheryett (ladhope).  I have 4 cildren, 2 have disabilities, so I can't always get out so it might take me a week or so but I would definately look for anyone that wants me too!

I put this on the scottish board as it is from glasgow, but they suggested it would be better here.

I think the family is Harris, Granny thinks it is her granpa but i'm not sure.  I think the couple are difierent ages.

I have no idea what is going on on the picture but it looks interesting and i hope somoene might know when or why it was taken.,364989.0.html
