The Common Room / Harry William Stanley Slinger
« on: Monday 29 November 21 20:08 GMT (UK)  »
I would appreciate another set(s) of eyes having a look and seeing if they can find Harry William Stanley Slinger after 1937.

He was born in 1896, Bootle and I have him on the 1901 census with his parents and sister https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X92G-1T5 and also on the 1911 census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWTZ-FZK

I know he joined the Liverpool Regiment in WW1 before transferring to the RAF.

He married Lilian Hilda Haill in 1931 and had a daughter in 1936.

Electoral rolls show him and Lilian living at Liscarde House, The Gardens, Pinner up to 1937.  I have a mention of a partnership being dissolved in 1934 (his partner was Bror Ornolf Fleischer, a Norwegian who naturalised in 1940). Their trading name was "Ralph Plummer", which HWS Slinger seemed to continue to use post-1934

And then - nothing!

HWS Slinger has used his forenames in differing order, but even taking that into consideration I am struggling to find any trace of him (or his wife and daughter!) after 1937.  Any further leads would be gratefully received!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help deciphering name
« on: Friday 08 October 21 19:22 BST (UK)  »
I am continuing my lockdown project of researching the back stories of signatories of a guest book and I have come across one name that I need help on.

I am tempted to think the first name is Lena, but it could equally be Jena or even Jeni.  The surname looks like it ends in lla, but  ???

Many thanks for any assistance!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Where is this? #29 River scene
« on: Tuesday 24 August 21 16:43 BST (UK)  »
Today's challenge is a river scene.  It sort of reminds me of the river Wye at Symonds Yat (by the Old Ferrie Inn), but I don't think it is - or at least I can't manage to recreate that view.

After the last two WIT? were solved within seconds of me posting, I am wondering how quickly this one will be solved!

I assume that it is a public lido, rather than a school pool, and I have also attached a cropped version showing the sign.

Good luck!

Just in case anyone was in danger of not having anything to do tonight.......

Two views of (presumably) the same location.  No idea or clue where the location is; the pictures were part of a shoebox full of pictures picked up in a local auction house and there is no writing or other markings on the reverse.

View 1 attached to this post.

It has been rather a while since I posted a Where is this? so I hope you haven't all lost your skills!!!!

My lovely mother in law has been clearing out her attic, and came across the attached photo.  There is nothing on the back, and it has obviously been cut down on the left and top sides.  The only writing or markings that I can see on the photo is on the bottom right corner, where it says E J Evans, Leominster.

Looking at the 4 boys towards the left of the picture, I was wondering whether this was a school?

Armed Forces / Half Pay List
« on: Thursday 29 July 21 09:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am researching the life of a soldier who was in the Dragoon Guards (joining from the Royal Military College in 1905, until his death in 1917).

I can't find his service record on either Ancestry or FindMyPast, so am piecing things together from other sources such as newspapers and the Army Lists that are on Fold3.

Twice during WW1, this soldier goes on the Half Pay list (according to the British Army List of 1915 and 1916, accessed via Fold3) - 31 July 1915 and 10 Aug 1916.  I understand that prior to WW1, the Half Pay list was used as a way of independently wealthy soldiers taking a leave of absence but was this still the case during WW1?  Is it more likely that he had been placed on the Half Pay list due to injury or illness - although I had assumed that if you were injured during action then you would remain on full pay until it was obvious that you wouldn't be able to resume your post.

The soldier in question was Robert Torrington Gwatkin, bn 1885 in Potterne.  (He is with his family on the 1891 and 1911 census, and at Harrow School in 1901)  His death was the subject of an inquest, which can be read in the Western Daily Press, 27 April 1917.

Many thanks for any assistance you can offer,

Sx

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Yet another DNA query......;)
« on: Wednesday 28 October 20 15:05 GMT (UK)  »
I have been spending my half term trying to pin down some of my husband's DNA matches (he has an unknown great grandfather who he would love to identify).

I went to one of his largest DNA matches - 102cM across 4 segments - and created a tree for that person up to gt gt gt grandparents but with no luck.  Next step was to cross reference a small shared match (49cM across 6 segments) and voila!  my husband and the smaller match have shared gt gt grandparents - George and Mary.

Using this to help pin down the branch of the larger DNA match, I've gone back down the line working through all the children and grandchildren of the shared George and Mary but still can't find the elusive tie in.

Is it possible that the larger connection could actually be further back but a large portion of DNA inherited due to cousins marrying?  Or is it more likely to be illegitmacy/extra marital affairs resulting in a close DNA match?
