Is there any software out there that can look at 2 GEDCOM files and generate a third one that contains all the people who are NOT common to both?

Armed Forces / C P O William Samuel Semmens b 1862
« on: Thursday 22 May 08 09:37 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace the naval career of William Samuel Semmens.
He was born on 3rd January 1862 in Southwark, Surrey. His parents were William Semmens and Maria although there is some question about this and tracing them is also of considerable interest.

He enlisted in the navy at Portsmouth aged 13 rising to the rank of CPO.

He was on board HMS Andromeda at the relief of Port Arthur and also on the Royal Oak. He may also have been in charge of a mine sweeper.

On leaving the navy he lived with his wife Mary Jane Semmens (a possible cousin) and their 3 children in Portsmouth where he is believed to have worked (as a foreman?) in the dockyard.

The above information is based on two completely independent sets of family recollections.

My main problem is that he does not show up in any of the on-line resources. I can't find him in the National Archives nor on any of the Navy Lists I've found to date.

Can anyone please suggest other sources of information?

I'm particularly interested in Joseph and Mary.
I have Margaret's parents.

Where was Emily born and what was her occupation?

Can anyone read the addresses?

Thanks.

Completed Census Requests / John Henry William Williams BIRTH *COMPLETED*
« on: Saturday 14 July 07 12:59 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone please find a birth or baptism record for John Henry William Williams b 1855 in Birmingham?
I'm trying to find his parents, but there are so many John Williams on FreeBMD, the IGI site, 1861 census etc. that I can't tell which one is mine.
I suspect that the third and sometimes second given names are omitted in some of these records for space reasons, or that they were never recorded in the first place.
In the first identifiable record I can find he is already married.

Cornwall / SEMMENS family.
« on: Friday 06 July 07 22:40 BST (UK)  »
I have a few questions concerning this family, many of whom seem to be in Cornwall.

I am descended from another family of Semmens who come from a small group of villages near Maldon in Essex.
The fruits of several peoples research can be found at:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,230312.0.html

There is a suggestion from more than one source in our group that the Semmens name originally came from France.
Or is it just another spelling of the generic Simons or Seaman?
What are the Cornish theories on this? Breton? Huguenot? Is there any known connection?

I am also trying to track down a possible cousin marriage:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,239454.0.html

The wife's lineage is well established, but where did the husband's family come from before his father?

Does any of this tie in with the Cornish family?

Thanks,

Peter.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Semmens in Royal Navy(?) and Portsmouth
« on: Tuesday 19 June 07 00:10 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to track down what appears to be a cousin marriage.

William Samuel Semmens b 3/1/1862 in Southwark married Mary Jane Semmens b 4/11/1865 in Goldhanger Essex in June quarter of 1893. By 1896 they were living in Portsmouth where they had at least 2 children, Maud E (b abt 1896) and Gladys M (b abt 1898). Mary Jane was my G Grandmother's sister.

William Samuel is believed to be previously a sailor, probably in the Navy (some of the Semmens family in Essex were fishermen / boatmen) but by the time they were living in Portsmouth he probably worked in the Naval dockyard and may have been a foreman.

His father was William Semmens b abt 1828 in Little Totham, Essex. His mother was Maria b abt 1830, also in Little Totham. William and Maria had 2 other childrren, Ann b 1859 and James b 1854.

Mary Jane's parents were John Semmens b 1839 in Goldhanger and Rebecca Kingsbury Gooch b 1845 in Goldhanger. John's parents were James Semmens b abt 1803 in Tollesbury and Mary Ann b abt 1805 in Little Totham. They had 7 other children, none of whom were William the elder.

I would like to establish that this was a cousin marriage, and hence the relationship between William the elder and Mary Jane's ancestors. Any other clarifications, dates etc. would be appreciated.

Does anyone know if there are any records of civilian workers at the dockyard around 1890 - 1910?

I have just discovered some more old notes about William:

Joined Royal Navy aged 13 at Portsmouth.
Ch Petty Officer
On HMS Andromeda at the relief of Port Arthur
Also HMS Royal Oak
Captain(?) of mine sweeper during WW1

Does this help track him down?
