Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Mystery solved or newbie assumption?
« on: Saturday 29 September 18 20:10 BST (UK)  »
I got my test results back recently and have found something potentially interesting in my Ancestry results.
Background: my paternal grandmother b1900 was illegitimate, and by the 1901 census she is with her adoptive parents Charles & Janet Brown in West Hartlepool. There was, apparently, local gossip that Charles was her biological father, Charles was born in Somerset but his family were from Devon, his mother, Mary Ann Anstey (1823-1891) was the daughter of John Anstey (1801-1865)and Charlotte Bidgood and they were from the village of Kenton.
What is interesting is that I have three 5th-8th cousin matches whos trees include Bidgoods from Kenton.Could the rumours be true or am I jumping to conclusions? I should add that I have one family line from Glamorgan and one from Shropshire but the rest are from the north of England, no links with Devon at all. I would really appreciate some insight from those more experienced in DNA.
Thank you.

« on: Thursday 11 May 17 13:33 BST (UK)  »
While going through one of my notebooks I came across the following Wellington settlement examination from around 1821 (FHL film no.2355586) which might be of use to someone:

Mansell, Ric, 31 was born a bastard in this Parish, his mothers name was Elizabeth Humphries and his fathers name was Chrispin Pritchards, he never was in service, was married to Jane his wife at Wellington abt 11 years ago by whom he has 5 children; Eliz. 9 1/2, Thomas 8, Jane 6, William 3 3/4 and Ann 1 1/2.

Charles was my great uncle, he was accidentally killed on 1 Feb 1917, my nana told me that he was kicked to death by mules. His service number was 10678 and he was in the 60th Machine Gun Company. He is buried in Meault Military Cemetery. Charles left a widow and three children.

Armed Forces / Another Naval & Pension Record Query
« on: Monday 11 April 16 13:05 BST (UK)  »
I have a copy of a pay allotment record relating to my ancestor, George Pyburn, details:
George Pyburn; Ship's name: HMS Agamemnon; Pay book number: SB 548; Rank: Landsman; Relation: Wife Isabella; When Alloted: 1798; Remarks: Discharged 18 February 1799 by admiralty order.
The new records on FindMyPast have a George Pyburn, No.542 who had served on Nemesis and was awarded a pension from 31 March 1807 and who apparently died 20 Sept 1822. How do I confirm if this is my George? I've been unable to find a burial record, nothing on NBI 2nd edition (his family were in Sunderland) and also is it possible to find out more about his time in the Navy? Thank you.

Technical Help / Transferring Images From Slides COMPLETED with thanks
« on: Friday 28 February 14 11:21 GMT (UK)  »
Is it possible to copy transparencies/slides to print or (better) digital images? And, if so, how can it be done? I'm not very techie so be gentle  :). Thank you.

Edited: Alternatively if there's some way in which I could view them on my PC I could take a screen shot.

Northumberland / Alexander Urwin of Ovingham
« on: Friday 23 November 12 09:53 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find a baptism for Alexander Urwin born about 1761. His children's baptisms from the Barrington period state that he's a native of Ovingham but I haven't found him in the Ovingham Parish Register. Does anyone know if there's a non conformist chapel that I could try? (I had a look on www.bmdregisters.co.uk but he only shows up in the baptism of two of his grandchildren and I couldn't find anything on FamilySearch.)
Thank you.

Can anyone work out what the word is after Middleton? I wondered if it was Middleton Tyas but I'm not sure. For reference the Will dates from 1698 and the testator was from Heighington, Co.Durham.

Thank you

Armed Forces / How to check if this is a true story
« on: Wednesday 06 June 12 13:43 BST (UK)  »
I was told by my grandma that my grandad once saved an officer in no-mans land, he apparently carried the wounded man back to the trenches but wasn't awarded a medal for this, more recently my mum mentioned this and said the reason that her dad wasn't  given a medal was because the man he rescued was an NCO rather than a commissioned officer and that the family had received a letter of thanks from the mans wife (now lost  ::) )

Grandad's service records don't appear to have survived so I'm at a bit of a loss to know if this is a true story or if it's one of those tales that's grown with the telling. Grandad served in the Royal Engineers no.236444 and the Kings Royal Rifle Corps no 5528 during WW1 and his name was Benjamin Thomas Watson (1891-1933)

Any advice gratefully received.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Can anything be done?
« on: Friday 25 May 12 13:17 BST (UK)  »
I've been trying to read the last word of this marriage entry (Thos. Snowball and Margaret Surties of ??) but it's too faint ,I know how some people have read it but that could be wishful thinking to link in with the Surtees family  :-\  Can anything be done to enhance it?

Thank you
