Kent Lookup Requests / Lookup 1901 census Ezra Peckham
« on: Thursday 06 October 11 19:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to find Ezra Frank Peckham and his family in the 1901 census. Ezra was born in 1899 in Sevenoaks. I know he was alive as he died in 1920 in Dartford aged 20.

He was son of Robert and Elizabeth Harriet (nee Dunster). They were originally known as Worsley and at some point changed their name to Peckham - we do not know why and are trying to find out. It must have been between my husband's great grandfather Frederick Charles Peckham (originally Worsley on his birth certificate) born in Cranbrook in 1890 and Ezra Frank Peckham (originally Peckham) born in Sevenoaks in 1899. Both certificates give their father's first name as Robert and their mother as Elizabeth Harriett (formerly Dunster).

In 1891 they were listed as Wardsley and were living in Tenterden:
Robert 28 coachman and gardener b. Tenterden, Kent
Elizabeth h 29 wife b. Same as above
George  a 6
Arthur e 4 b. Goudhurst, Kent
Florence m 2
Frederick c 5m

In 1911 Ezra was listed as Ezrey Peckham and was living in a seperate house to his father with his older brother George Peckham and his wife Ellen.

Any help greatly appreciated as I have tried very hard but keep getting nothing!

Kent / Peckham/Worsley of Cranbrook, Kent
« on: Thursday 17 July 08 20:04 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to research my partners family. I have been told that the family changed their name from Worsley to Peckham and no one knows why.

My partners grandfather was Ronald Arthur Peckham, born to Frederick Peckham and Alice Mabel (nee Brunger) in Dartford in 1920. I have found a wedding for Frederick Peckham and Alice M Brunger in March 1920 in Dartford. However I haven't yet sent off for the certificate.

I am told that Frederick was originally called Frederick Charles Worsely son of Robert and Elizabeth Harriet (nee Dunster), b. 3 Nov 1890, Hope Mill Cottages, Goudhurst, Cranbrook, Kent. We have a certificate showing this birth. Nobody knows why the family changed their name and Ron's birth certificate says his father was Frederick Peckham (note no middle name mentioned either). Also the marriage record for Fredk does not include a middle name of Charles.

I have searched the 1891 census where Fredk aged 0-1 years (probably near Goudhurst) should be but can not find him. I have looked under both Peckham and Worsley. I also can not find his parents Robert and Elizabeth Worsley. I have found a reference for a wedding in June 1884 for Elizabeth Harriet Dunster and Robert Worsley in Tenterden, fairly close to Cranbrook. But I am a bit doubtful about whether these are Fredk's true parents as I have only heard about the name change from hearsay at the moment.

Can anybody else help me with this mystery? I am aware that sooner or later I am going to have to purchase these certificates but I just haven't had a chance yet.

Thanks

hI,

I have just got one line of my family back to Sophia Brown b. abt. 1800 Kings Lynn, Norfolk. She later married John Low of Laxfield, Suffolk and had a family in Cambridge. Does anyone know of any records from Kings Lynn that would help me to research her further?

Many thanks

Occupation Interests / Finding out about Governesses
« on: Wednesday 06 December 06 16:40 GMT (UK)  »
How can I find out about some relatives who were governesses to some of the Dukes and Duchesses in the 1800's. I have a list of families who crop up in various family recollections - the Duke & Duchess of Fife, Duke & Duchess of Somerset,  D. Francisco GISBERT & Earl St Maur, however I do not know if there is a way of tracing their governesses and seeing if any of my family do indeed turn up!

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Thanks

Nikki

Northumberland Lookup Requests / 1881 census Monaghan/Moore
« on: Wednesday 06 December 06 15:37 GMT (UK)  »
I have a Teresa Monaghan b. March 1857, Gateshead, Durham, daughter of Francis and Sarah.

She was married in April 1885 to James George Moore. At this time she was living in Hawes Street (possibly no.54) and James was living at no.12 Hawes Street, Newcastle. On her wedding certificate it says 'Theresa Moneghan described in certificate as Theresa Monagan'.

Teresa is in the following census':

1851 - Hillgate, Gateshead, Durham - Ref 2402,511,9,10
1861 - South Shields, Durham - Ref 3794, 43, 32
1871 - Herbert Street, Elswick, Northumberland - Ref 5079, 35, 10

In 1881 her family are living at 24 Stanley Street, Elswick, Northumberland but Teresa isn't here. I think she worked abroad for a time and maybe this was over the 1881 census but I would be greatful if someone else could double check for me and see if they can find either Teresa or James in the 1881 census.

Many thanks

Nikki

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Census address - ref supplied
« on: Wednesday 06 December 06 14:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Can anyone confirm the address on the following 1851 census entry?

HO107/2402; Folio 510; Page 9;

I believe the Monaghan's may be my family.

I have a birth certificate from 1857 with Oakwellgate Lane as the address, I am unsure if this matches up?

Many thanks

Nikki

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Moneghan/Monagan mystery, Elswick N-U-T
« on: Friday 13 October 06 10:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Sorry this is a long one for people who like to play detective only!!! :-)
Any help that anyone can provide with this mystery will be very greatly appreciated...

My great grandmother was Theresa Moneghan, she lived in Newcastle, Gateshead, Durham & Sunderland during her life and had Irish roots. I was told she was born in Glaslough, County Monaghan and we are unsure when the family moved over to England. I have found her in the 1901 and 1891 census with her husband James George Moore living in Elswick, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, (aged 31 in 1891). I have found the details of their marriage in Newcatle Upon Tyne in 1885 and have a copy of the certificate which states Theresa's father as Francis. We have no other details of the family except that she had a sister Winifred, and I am told an Aunt Sarah. Theresa's wedding certificate also states she was baptised Monagan although her name is now transcribed as Moneghan.

I have found an 1881 census entry in Stanley Street, Elswick for the following family:
Sarah Monagan, 59, b.Ireland
Frank, 21, son, b. Gateshead, Durham
Winifred, 12, dau, b.Newcastle-Upon-Tyne

In 1891 this same family show as:
Sarah Monaghan, 67, b. Ireland, Housekeeper
Frank, 31, son, b. Gateshead, Engineer
Winifred Webster, 22, b.N-U-T, Bartender

In 1901 Frank Monghan was living with the Silman family in Elswick - noted as brother-in-law.

I have found births of (these are only guesses):
Francis Monachon - Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Seot 1861, 10b 6
Winifred Catherine Monaghan - N-U-T, Jun 1869, 10b 4
There is a death of a Sarah Monaghan in 1897 in Newcastle.

Going back to 1871 I have found a census entry in Southshields, Durham for the following which may correspond, but unfortunately does not include any names of the children:

Francis Moneghan, 39, Shoemaker, b. Ireland
Sarah, 39
M, 19, son
S, 14, dau
H, 13, son
T, 7, dau
T, 4, dau
F, 1, son

Can anyone provide better deciphering of these letters?

I am starting to believe that maybe Theresa was born in England and that this Sarah was her mother, these records seem to fit but it is difficult to prove anything.

Is anybody able to find any of these things to help me confirm the family, obviously I will keep looking myself too but it is very difficult to make the confirmed link and I thought a few more pairs of eyes may help...
 - birth records for children in the 1871 census
 - an 1861 census for this family (bearing in mind we do not know when they moved over to England and I was always told Theresa was born in Ireland although the census doesn't agree)
 - a marriage record for Francis and Sarah Moneghan/Monagan
 - a marriage record for Winifred Monegan becoming Webster - did her husband die?
 - a death record for Francis Moneghan/Monagan
 - a birth for Theresa (if she was born in England)

If you have remained interested enough to get this far down the post then I am very grateful! Any little helps!

Thanks

Nikki

Buckinghamshire / MUNDAYS of Halton
« on: Thursday 20 July 06 10:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

If anyone has any research relating to the Munday family of Halton I would be keen to hear from you.

I am trying to find about more about Ann Munday b.abt.1817 Halton, married to Henry Garnett. I have their marriage certificate but no father is recorded. Witnesses at the wedding were Lucy Billington and Henry Norwood - both of whom I have found living in Halton in the 1841 census, however I can not figure out if these are any relation.

I have details from the IGI of several Munday families of Halton but can not find anything relating to my Ann.

Many thanks

Nikki
