Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Survey: unknown parentage and DNA testing
« on: Tuesday 29 December 20 21:34 GMT (UK)  »
How successful is DNA in helping British & Irish adoptees (and other people of unknown parentage) find their biological family? That’s what this survey aims to find out.

If you or one (or both) of your parents were born in Britain or Ireland and you have taken a DNA test, then please complete the 14 questions in this brief survey. It takes about two minutes to complete and the results will help inform future research. (Please note that NO identifying information is stored - it is completely anonymous).

Please feel free to share the link with friends & family and on mailing lists and social media.

If you have any questions, please leave a comment below and we will endeavour to answer it as quickly as possible. Here is the link to the survey.

The University of Leicester have announced an exciting new collaborative project to grow the Y-chromosome tree with the help of citizen scientists.

Anyone who has taken the BigY test or a Y-chromosome sequencing at another company such as Full Genomes or YSEQ is eligible to participate. The project is particularly interested in getting data from people with patrilines from Devon, Cornwall and the Arabian peninsula.

You can find details of the project here:

« on: Friday 31 March 17 00:57 BST (UK)  »
DNA is very much on the menu at this year's Who Do You Think You Are? Live which takes place next week at the NEC in Birmingham.

I've put a list of all the DNA talks here:

Hope to see some of you there.

There is a new DNA test that has been recently launched from  a British company called Living DNA. They are providing detailed regional breakdowns within Britain based on comparisons with the People of the British Isles dataset. I've written a preview of the test here:

The full schedule for the DNA workshop at Who Do You Think You Are? Live is now available on the WDYTYA website:

http://www.whodoyouthinkyouarelive.com/workshop-timetable-dna

Note that the DNA lectures cannot be booked in advance and seating is offered on a first come first served basis.

Three of the DNA lectures will this year take place in the SOG workshop in SOG Theatre 2. These are the lectures from Dr Turi King on "Discovering Richard III", Richard Hill on "Finding Family With DNA Testing: A Genetic Detective Story", and Bennett Greenspan on "Genetic Genealogy: The Past, The Present and the Future". These lectures can be booked in advance and it's recommended that you do so especially if you want to hear Turi King. Here is the full SOG workshop schedule:

http://www.whodoyouthinkyouarelive.com/workshop-timetable

ISOGG - the International Society of Genetic Genealogy - will have a stand at WDYTYA (stand number 190 opposite the DNA theatre). ISOGG can offer independent advice on DNA testing so if you have any questions come along and ask.

A major resource has been lost by the genetic genealogy community following the decision by Ancestry.com to close down the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation website and databases.

Roberta Estes has the details here:

http://dna-explained.com/2015/05/15/rip-sorenson-a-crushing-loss/

Judy Russell pleads for Ancestry to let genealogists have access to their data:

http://www.legalgenealogist.com/blog/2015/05/17/of-babies-and-bathwater/

Dick Eastman offers his own perspective on DNA and privacy:

http://blog.eogn.com/2015/05/15/sorenson-molecular-genealogy-foundation-dna-database-has-been-shut-down/

A legal view from James Tanner:

Although not explicitly stated here is the background on the falsely reported story which probably led to the decision to shut down the SMGF:
