Dublin / Richard Mayne
« on: Sunday 30 January 22 17:07 GMT (UK)  »
I am assisting a friend in trying to find information about her ancestor, Richard Mayne. All she knows about him is that he was born in Ireland, possibly Dublin, around 1787/1788 and served as a Lieutenant with the 30th Regiment of Foot from 1809 until his death in 1827 at the Infantry Barracks, Canterbury, Kent.
She has in her possession his 1815 Waterloo Medal which has been passed down through the generations of the Mayne family. She would very much like to try and establish how she is related to him.
I am new to Irish genealogy and would therefore very much appreciate any help in tracing Richard's birth record and family.

Armed Forces / Lieutenant Richard Mayne - 30th Regiment of Foot

I understand that military records may give details of birth and parents, as well as service career.
Any help in tracing Richard's birth and military record would be very much appreciated.

World War Two / Service with the Remount Squadron & Royal Army Veterinary Corps
« on: Wednesday 21 October 20 12:33 BST (UK)  »
I have the WW2 service record of a soldier who served with the Remount Squadron & the Royal Army Veterinary Corps in Palestine, Greece, Iraq and France. There is no mention in the record of him being directly engaged in any military action. I would be interested to learn whether soldiers of the Remount Squadron & RAVC solely looked after the horses, etc. or were also actively engaged in combat.

Lincolnshire / Marriage of Edward Green & Ann Curtis
« on: Tuesday 15 October 19 17:40 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace the marriage of Edward Green & Ann Curtis. They appear in the 1871-1911 censuses, living in Billinghay, near Sleaford. Listed on the censuses are five of their children - Sarah Jane, born June quarter of 1868, William Edward, born Sept quarter of 1871, Lucy Ann, born Sep quarter of 1873, John, born March quarter of 1876 and William, born Sept quarter of 1878.
The GRO online index gives their mother's maiden surname as 'Curtis', except for William Edward, given as 'Cart'. There is a step-daughter, Ellen Carr, aged 8 on the 1871 Census, but there is no entry on the GRO online index in this name, only an Ellen Curtis, born March quarter of 1863 with no mother's maiden surname given.
I can find no marriage in the whole of the GRO index for Edward Green & Ann Curtis, but there is an entry in the March quarter of 1863 in Sleaford for Edward Green and Ann Carter. I am therefore wondering if Ann's maiden surname could possibly have been incorrectly registered.
If anyone has access to the parish records for this area I would be most grateful if they could search for this marriage.
Many thanks.
Geoff

The Common Room / Buffs Regalia?
« on: Thursday 29 August 19 16:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

This is a photo of my grandfather wearing what I believe to be the regalia of the RAOB (The Buffs). I would be grateful if anyone could advise whether it is, and what the initials 'W P' on the apron and cuffs stand for.
Thanks in anticipation.

I have hit a brick wall tracing the parents of Alfred John Lloyd, born 1849/1850 in Coalport, and think that he might have been the illegitimate son of Susannah Lloyd. His marriage certificate might reveal the name of his father. I would be grateful to hear if anyone might have access to his marriage certificate.

Lancashire / Baptism 1860 - Jemima Louisa Chatton
« on: Sunday 14 January 18 18:55 GMT (UK)  »
I have found what appears to be two separate baptism entries for Jemima Louisa Chatton, daughter of George (Iron Founder/Master) and Mary Chatton, as follows -
Baptism - 22nd March, 1860 at St Matthew, Little Lever
Baptism - 15th April, 1860 at St John the Evangelist, Farnworth with Kearsley

I shall be grateful if anyone can explain why this might have happened.

World War Two / Helen Louisa Schoeneweiss (nee Heighway) - WW2 Internee?
« on: Friday 22 September 17 18:29 BST (UK)  »
My great aunt, Helen Louisa Heighway, married a German national, Walter Schoeneweiss in 1904 and as a result, according to family rumour was interned in Holloway prison during WW2. I would very much appreciate any assistance in trying to ascertain if this is correct.
