Census and Resource Discussion / Problems with Ancestry Website
« on: Thursday 15 November 12 19:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Is anyone else having problems with the ancestry website?  I am able to log in and view my home page but if I try to access anything else by clicking on a category ie birth, marriage deaths in order to search, nothing happens.  I cannot seem to move off my home page.  I hope that this makes sense.

I am not experiencing this problem when visiting any other website.

Census and Resource Discussion / West Yorkshire Parish Records
« on: Sunday 22 July 12 11:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am currently transcribing burial records from the 1830's for an on line website from images of  the burial registers supplied by the website I am transcribing them for.  I have used the on line records of a popular genealogy website merely as a checking aid if the image I am transcribing is of poor quality.

I am appalled at the way the particular records which I am transcribing have been transcribed on this popular website.  If the deceased is a child, a wife or a widow they have only been transcribed under their forename even though their surname is clearly visible when looking at the image of the burial register page.  Another common error seems to be that where the deceased has two forenames the second forename has been transcribed as the deceased's surname even though again their surname is clearly visible when looking at the image of the burial register page.

How on earth anyone is supposed to find records relating to their ancestors when they have been transcribed in this way is beyond me. ???

I am assuming that the people who transcribed these registers were instructed to transcribe them in this way otherwise one would assume that the error would have been picked up on when the transcription was checked before being put on line.

I am not saying that my transcription of the records will be perfect but at least  they will be searchable by surname regardless of whether the deceased was a child, wife etc when they eventually go on line.

Rant over now, feel much better :)

Census and Resource Discussion / Transcription Error Census Records
« on: Sunday 06 May 12 20:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have just come across this transcription error on the 1911 census. This is how the gentleman's occupation as been transcribed.  Katiroual Secioul For Ste Printim of Curlty To Cholter.   ??? When I looked at the original image the gentleman's occupation was Inspector National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.

No wonder there are people we never manage to find in the census records.

Hi All,

I have just received an e mail from Who Do You Think You Are Magazine in which it was announced the launch of a new web site for anyone researching London Ancestors.

Here is the web site address www.londonlives.org

A quote from the web site "A fully searchable edition of 240,00 Manuscripts from 8 archives and 15 datasets, giving access to 3.35 million names."

Apologies to Valda, who I now see has already posted information with regards to this web site.

Technical Help / Converting Microsoft Excel Documents
« on: Saturday 20 February 10 09:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I wonder if anyone can advise me whether there is soft ware available which can convert Microsoft Excel Documents into a document which can be searched by entering say a surname.  I do have Adobe installed on my computer but would have no idea how to convert the Excel Document so that Abode is able to read it or in deed whether this is posible to do.

I have recently transcribed two burial registers each containing over 4,000 names into  Microsoft Excel Documents for a family history society but as you can imagine searching for a specific surname for my own personal research is taking some time.

I am a complete computer novice, so if anyone is kind enough to respond to this post would they please take this into account when responding  to my question.

Hi Beebee123

A very warm welcome to Rootschat.  I viewed a reply which you made to a recent post and wondered whether I could be cheeky and ask whether you minded taking a look to see whether there are any monumental inscriptions for the surname Redshaw.

My great, great grand parents moved to the Dacre Banks area in around 1830 and my Great Grandfather and his siblings were born in and around that area.

I also wondered whether I could take advantage of your knowledge of the area and ask whether you could tell me which possible churches  my ancestors may have been baptised, married etc and where to look for any possible parish records.

Not living in the area, my research is restricted to the internet and any parish registers which I may be able to purchase either in booklet form or on cd.

I would appreciate any advise you are willing to give me regarding finding records relating to my family either parish or otherwise.

Very Best Wishes

Derbyshire / Petts Family - Brick Wall
« on: Sunday 22 November 09 18:10 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if there is anyone who might be able to help me break down a brick wall I have come to in my research.

I know that my great, great, great grandfather George Petts was born in about 1820 in Alderwasley Derbyshire.  He moved to Yorkshire sometime between 1851 and 1861.

I know from his marriage certificate that his fathers name was also George, but have had no luck either locating a baptism record for George Junior or tracing this line of my family tree any further back in Derbyshire.

I wonder whether someone could advise me where to look for a possible baptism record for George Junior, or give me any  ideas on how to progress any further back with my research.

Unfortunately I do not live in Derbyshire, so am having to do most of my research via the internet or by trying to purchase parish registers on cd.

Any help or advice given would be gratefully accepted and appreciated.

Thank you

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Almondbury/Berry Brow Parish Registers
« on: Wednesday 28 October 09 12:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I wonder whether anyone can tell me whether there are copies of parish registers available to purchase for the parishes of Almondbury and Berry Brow.  I am trying to trace the baptism for someone in either 1785 or 1788 who lists his place of birth on one census as Almondbury and on another as Berry Brow.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

I wonder whether some one would be kind enough take a look at the 1861 census for Chorlton on Medlock and see whether they can locate this couple and also any children who may be living with them.

William Slater born about 1815 Scrayingham. Yorkshire
Judith or Jane Slater born about 1819 Kenilworth, Warwickshire

In 1851 they are living at 100 Upper Rumford Street, Chorlton on Medlock and in 1871 they are living at what I think looks like 8 Plymouth Grove. Chorlton on Medlock.

Despite searching using every spelling alternative I can think of I have been unable to locate them in 1861.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
