Census and Resource Discussion / Census over time - numbers in a particular parish
« on: Wednesday 10 January 24 12:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all
I’ve been asked a question and haven’t located the answer on the National Archives website or my own knowledge so wondered if anyone here had advice.
They wanted to know if it was possible to tell just from the ten year censuses roughly what the population was in a particular parish when each census was taken. So eg in Parish A in 1841, 51, 61 etc etc. We know that parish boundaries might have changed, so they were curious as to the growth in the area in very rough terms not precisely. I know some histories may have been written about individual areas, but this question related to the actual census returns. Any ideas? Many thanks.

Kent / Sidcup Hospital 1921 census
« on: Saturday 09 September 23 13:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi all
Has anyone located Sidcup Hospital on the 1921 census? I’ve looked at the institution lists for army, hospitals and ministry of pensions hospitals to find the ED but I’m just not spotting Sidcup listed. I Wondered if anyone with Kent knowledge knew more. I’m not wanting lookups which aren’t allowed anyway, but would like to try and see the correct ED.
Many thanks

The Lighter Side / Transcribing records onto an Excel spreadsheet
« on: Thursday 03 August 23 21:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi all
Does anyone have any advice about transcribing some records from a parish register onto a spreadsheet. It’s a while since I’ve used Excel,  but my questions relate to the best way I type it in and if you can or should sort the records into alphabetical order.
So eg burial records they’ll appear in date order, so I’d set up different columns for eg date ,surname, first name, age.
. Would you suggest a different spreadsheet for every year or just keep going till all the sheets have been used up?
If I then wanted to reorder them into surname order, will all the other columns ‘ follow’ attached to the name or would it scramble it all up?
Sorry if this is basic to some of you, but as I said, it’s been a while !
Many thanks.

Census and Resource Discussion / 1921 Census England - order of the returns
« on: Monday 20 March 23 12:54 GMT (UK)  »
Just after opinions please not look up.
On the 1921, what is your opinion about the order of the returns we can view. I’ve read the FindMyPast pages about how the census was done and it says
’ we think that the enumerators sorted the census schedules into a tidy and sensible order and numbered them in the Schedule Number box on the back of the form. ‘
My question arose from a street where the houses are named houses not numbered ones and I was wondering if eg Avalon was next to Ravenscroft House and so on. Did the enumerator put them in-house order as being a ‘tidy and sensible order. ‘
On the 1911 especially the summary books, it was great as you could see mostly which house was next to each other. That’s fine if the house in the 1921 was also on the 1911 and then you can track forward onto the 1921, but one street I was looking at the houses weren’t built until just after WW1.
Thanks.

Hi all
Can’t seen another post showing this, but FindMyPast have altered their subs so that full access to the whole of the 1921 is included in the Premium subscription for anyone that’s interested. Micro payments remain on the other levels of subscriptions. They offer an upgrade rate if you are part way through your sub year.

The Common Room / School Admission Registers and Log Books
« on: Tuesday 01 February 22 13:31 GMT (UK)  »
I was looking at an entry on FindMyPast for a relative and having located what I wanted, I decided to scroll through lots of other pages, just to see what was written in there. It was fascinating! ( in my opinion )
The one I was looking at covered 1885 - 1890 and it was the log book of a girls junior school with feeder infant schools .  Any teachers here - think ofsted in the olden days .

Eg - The Mistress examined Standards 111 to V1, the result being total failure.
In another class -
Child a was backward - did not know the alphabet
Child b was dull
Child c was delicate
Child d - it will do him good to be put back ( this was in the days when they could move children back a year or repeat a year)

This being the week of the horse fair, the attendance has been most unsatisfactory.

Child e left the school as she was unhappy at my commenting on her missing school on washing days.
The children were named but I've put them as a to e.
There were another 400 images to read , so I think I can while away a good few hours having a good read.

The Common Room / 1939 Register -can you search on a subsequent married name
« on: Thursday 27 January 22 20:29 GMT (UK)  »
Evening all
I’m not wanting a look up don’t worry, but wondered if anyone had tried searching for someone in the 1939 by their married name when they didn’t marry till AFTER 1939? You know the names where the records have been annotated later ?. I saw on some FindMyPast results that both names were stated but I couldn’t tell if you could search on the new name solely?
As you can probably tell,  I’m missing a lady who’s hiding somewhere,  though I realise she could possibly be in the military ( she’d be in her 30’s) . She didn’t marry until 1940 so I know her married name and I also know her birth date and baptism date. She’s a twiglet so I’m trying to avoid spending £11 on a marriage certificate when I know roughly where she was by 1940. It’d just be nice to know where she was in 1939. Thanks.

World War One / Pension record and death certificate / inquest advice please
« on: Saturday 08 May 21 16:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi I’m not looking for a look up on the soldier .
I’m after advice about procedure and process which I’ve found in relation to one of my ancestors.
When my ancestor died in 1950 age 59, his death certificate says he was an WW1 Army Disability pensioner and the informant on the cert says it was the local coroner following an inquest   He served in WW1 army and was awarded a disability pension and I have his service record and his pension record. The pension record states it was paid for life. The death certificate says at the top it was issued for the purposes of widows pension.
My question is , as the war pension record said it was paid for life, does that mean his widow didn’t get anything after his death? It was the heading at the top of the cert saying issued for purposes of widows pension that has thrown me.
I had a look online for the answers to my question inc Nat Archives, the Long long trail, the genealogy subscription sites but haven’t seen anything that might answer my question so wondered if anyone in here had come across it before.
Thanks
