Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Having Trouble With My Neighbours *COMPLETED*
« on: Saturday 30 November 13 14:40 GMT (UK)  »
I think I need a fresh set of eyes as I must be missing something.

I'm currently researching the Neighbour family of Maidenhead, Berkshire, namely the family of John and Jane Neighbour, nee Willis.  I am having trouble finding them on the 1871 Census.  John and Jane married in Henley in 1862, they had a son Joseph born in Henley in 1863, another son Walter in 1867 in Aldershot, Hampshire and another son Henry born in Aldershot in 1871.

John was born in 1842 in Hambledon, Buckinghamshire and Jane was born in Hambledon also in 1844.

I can find everyone pre and post 1871.

They're probably right under my nose, could someone kindly point them out for me?

any help most gratefully received.

Berkshire Lookup Requests / Burial Look Up - James and Mary Knight
« on: Thursday 21 November 13 13:13 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for information on where James Knight born 1823 in Warfield, Berkshire, died 1900 Easthampstead, Berkshire and Mary Knight born 1825 Maidenhead, Berkshire, died 1908 Reading, Berkshire, may be buried.

The descendant that contacted me is certain they are buried in Bray Parish (Holyport) Cemetery and they have requested a picture of the headstone.  I recently photographed Bray Parish Cemetery and do not have a James or Mary Knight on my records, it is entirely possible I may have missed them as I had my husband with me at the time and he was moaning about how it may be considered a bit odd to be hanging around a cemetery taking pictures.  So I was a bit rushed.

I would be most grateful is someone would be able to confirm a place of burial or suggest the best approach.

Thanks in advance.

Census and Resource Discussion / Desperately seeking Daisy
« on: Wednesday 24 April 13 20:41 BST (UK)  »
I came across the gravestone of Daisy Maud Spencer the other day on a wander round my local cemetery whilst taking pictures of inscriptions for a fellow genealogist on Australia.

Anyway I snapped a picture because of the beautiful wild primroses growing there and I noticed her gravestone states that she did suddenly on 21st august 1911.  This grabbed my interest and I attempted to find her on the 1911.  I have found her, the cousin of Sir Stanley Spencer, born in Cookham Berkshire in 1882 on the 1891 and 1901 Census, but no joy on the 1911.

The one daisy Maud spencer I can find on the 1911 Census I am certain is no her.  I have tried searching under different spellings, as Daisy Maud, just Daisy and just Maud. No luck. I know she died in Southwark, London aged 29.

Any fresh ideas on how to search for her?

Any help gratefully received.

Armed Forces / What was the Towaki Expedition?
« on: Wednesday 20 February 13 18:35 GMT (UK)  »
One of the people I am currently researching, Captain Frederick Charles Boehmer who served in both the Bedfordshire Regiment and the East Surrey Regiment was apparently on the Towaki Expedition.

However, I can find no information on what it was.  Maybe I've got the name wrong or I'm looking in the wrong places.  Any help would be gratefully received.

London and Middlesex / A bit of a mystery
« on: Saturday 09 February 13 16:23 GMT (UK)  »
Firstly I am not sure if this is the right place for this post.  So I apologise if I have got it wrong.

I am currently researching the lives of John Lane Hawkins born in 1841 in Hatcham Kent and his wife Emma Margaret ? born 1844 in Brixton, whom John married around 1865.

Emma died in Maidenhead Berkshire in 1914 and John in 1918 in Bishpos Stortford.  Both Emma and John are buried in the same grave and commemoried on the same gravestone in All Saints Cemetery in Maidenhead.

Now here's the confusing bit.  In 1901 in Kensington and 1911 in Maidenhead Emma is listed as being married, but John is absent.  He turns up on the 1901 Census in Westminster apparently married to Christine and again on the 1911 Census for the Channel Islands as being married to Christine for 30 years, which would put the year of their marriage around 1880/81.  However I have been unable to find any information regarding John divorcing Emma, nor have I been able to find a marriage that fits for John and Christine.

Could John Lane have been leading a double life?  Did he divorce Emma, who continued to pass herself off as married on the census returns to avoid embarassment?  If so, why would they end up buried together?

World War One / Help reading handwritting on WWI Pension Records COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 29 September 12 11:35 BST (UK)  »
I am currently researching James Henry Golding who enlisted with the 3rd Royal Berkshire in the Januray of 1916.  James Henry was born in 1976 in Plimco London and lived in Maidenhead Berkshire.

It seems that before he joined up he suffered with Chronic Suppurative Disease of the middle ear, which caused hearing loss and resulted in James being discharged as no longer fit for service in the July of 1918.  At the time it was decided that military service had not caused the problem nor made it worse.

However in 1918 they seem to have a change of mind.  One of the records states.

"The Pension Appeal Tribunal decided on 22nd Nov 1918 that this man’s ? was aggravated by military service is consequence of ? present war."

I'm having trouble reading the question marked words.  I would be grateful for any help.

How did they manage to read their own handwriting is beyond me.

Poor James then died on 5th January 1919 aged 43.

World War One / Help Understanding WWI Service Records. COMPLETED, Thanks
« on: Friday 21 September 12 10:19 BST (UK)  »
I am currently researching the life of Joseph Henry Edwards born in Maidenhead Berkshire 1889/1890 and who died in Reading Berkshire on 10th February 1921.  Joseph has a Commonwealth war Grave with the following information J H Edwards WR/504544 Sapper Royal Engineers died 10th February 1921.

I managed to find his war service records on Ancestry and there a little confusing.  It doesn't help that several pages are copied over and over.  It looks like he was court martialled at some point and sentenced to 9 months, but not in a prison.  In 1915/16 he was discharged as no longer being phsyically fit for service.  I think it says due to Vascular Disease of Heart, but the hand writing is very hard to read.  It looks like he tried to re-enlist at some point.

I would be most grateful is someone could help me understand why he was discharged, if he tried to re-enlist.

Also I know the 'cut off' point for war graves was 1921 ish, but I was under the impression (probably incorrectly) that to have a war grave the person serving had to pass away due injury or ilness as a result of their service.  Is this correct?

I hope to order Joseph's death certificate at the end of the month to clear up the cause of death.

Thank you in advance.

World War One / Information on Aubrey Edward Townsend 1919 Royal Fusiliers
« on: Friday 17 February 12 15:05 GMT (UK)  »
Aubrey Edward Townsend was born in 1886 in London to Philip Limbrach Townsend and Elizabeth Townsend nee Weston.

He's registered on CWGC website as having died on 14 June 1919 in Huntingdonshire, he was a private in the Royal Fusiliers 101261 and now lies buried in Brampton Cemetery Huntingdonshire.  A quick google brings up the sugestion that he may ahev drowned.

I have been searching Ancestry.co.uk's military records, but to no avail.

Could anyone else have a quick try and see if they have better luck?

Many thanks in advance.
