For Sale / Wanted / Events / The Motor Cycle Sept 1940
« on: Sunday 29 January 23 15:22 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for a copy of this weekly magazine published in London.  I am looking for the edition of Sept 19th 1940.  Apart from keeping an eye out on Ebay etc, is there an archive for old editions?  I have found a receipt for an article my father wrote in that edition but no copy of the magazine.  It concerned bomb damage to his Triumph!

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Burns Family Fermanagh c 1916

This is not a great quality photo but I thought some colour might enhance it.  I put it thru one of the instant colouriser offers and was not a good result.

The youngest child was born in Nov 1909.

Suffolk Lookup Requests / Foxhall Road Ipswich
« on: Wednesday 18 October 17 17:26 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can tell me what sort of place 529 Foxhall Road was in 1936?  It is where a relative died but I do not recognise the name of the informant.  I wonder was it a nursing home or other medical place as this person was in her 80's.  It is now a modern flat development.

This person lived in London and Kent until her late 70's so I am trying to find a connection to Ipswich.

The Common Room / Tradition of Family Bible
« on: Friday 16 September 16 19:59 BST (UK)  »
There is an old bible in our family with just one surname, place and date on front page.  I know these are items that are handed down in families and usually on the female line in order of age.  I cannot date the actual bible but it looks very old and perhaps older than the date handwritten inside  of a day in 1884.
How did the first bible start? Would it have been a wedding gift to a couple? or christening to a child? Meanwhile the surname only is to be found in our tree in 1770's so no idea how this one with same surname and 1884 date on it came about.
Perhaps this was a religious person and the bible was a gift for ordination?

Occupation Interests / Master Mariner
« on: Tuesday 29 March 16 17:22 BST (UK)  »
It is a while since I looked for this person.  He was a master mariner with royal naval dockyard in his latter  years.  I was at Kew once and I thought I needed to go first to Greenwich for some reference number to access Kew records?

He was born 1834 in Cornwall and died 1924 in Sheerness where he worked for last 30 yrs or so of  his working life.  I think I looked at some online list of names but he was not on it.... perhaps they were merchant seamen?

I have opportunity to visit London soon and wonder whither to go Kew or Greenwich?  How easy is it to get information on a short visit to Greenwich?

Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / FTM App
« on: Thursday 15 May 14 16:01 BST (UK)  »
I have my tree on laptop with FTM 2012 edition.  I now have a smartphone and am delighted to see there is an app in Google Store for Ancestry which I have installed.  Now question is, how do I get my data onto the version in the smartphone?

I just want to be able to look up raw details when travelling/visiting so a static version is all I need,

Apologies if this has been covered before.

The Common Room / Christening Robe
« on: Sunday 16 June 13 12:54 BST (UK)  »
Are there any traditions associated with Christening Robes?  For instance, would such a garment be passed down the female side of a family or maybe the eldest daughter, like a family bible?  My grandmother made a gown out of her wedding dress and I presume that was another custom or was it just being practical!   We have an old one in the family and I have just discovered from a newly found photo that it is not the one my father wore so no idea where it came from or from whence the one he was wearing came from!  or where it went thereafter!

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Christening Robe
« on: Sunday 16 June 13 12:47 BST (UK)  »
This is a recently discovered  photo of my father.  It had been folded into a frame and bottom section now revealed shows the detail of the christening robe he is wearing.  I have managed to tidy it up a bit but cannot even out the tone of the lower half of the gown.  The embroidery detail on the bottom of the gown is interesting as it shows it is a different gown to the one we now have in the family.  I would like to keep this detail if possible.  A bit of colour might cheer up the drab background!

Thank you in advance   :)
