Lanarkshire / SCHOOL DINNERS FOR ORPHANS
« on: Tuesday 02 June 20 03:48 BST (UK)  »
My GF and his two brothers were aged 2, 4 & 6 yrs when their father died and aged 6, 8 & 10 when their mother died. They were brought up by Grandparents.

I have a copy of the Poor Relief claim from when their father died right up until each of the boys were booted and suited for starting work.

My GF once said 'he would never forgive Granny for sending them to school on a Saturday'. He found it embarrassing due to the stigma attached to orphans. He attended John Street school, Bridgeton probably around 1905, he was born 1893.

Would orphans have attended lessons on a Saturday or would they only have gone along for their dinner?

Family History Beginners Board / ENGLISH RECORDS - A Question
« on: Sunday 09 May 10 22:21 BST (UK)  »
I am familiar with researching scottish ancestors but unfamiliar with tracing english ones.

I have only purchased english certificates when I have been sure I have the correct person, but I still have quite a few to order and have held off incase they are not my ancestor.

Can you view certificates anywhere (like in a local office) before purchase to make sure you have the correct ancestor?

Thanks for your help folks

Heather

Scotland / Help with finding a site - Please
« on: Monday 30 November 09 00:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Folks, found a good site last week, I know I should of bookmarked it, but for some reason I did not, god I'm kicking myself now, have spend 2 days trying to find it again. :'(

The site had rather a lot of graveyards in Scotland, all indexed with names (most of the ones I searched were in Lanarkshire and included Old & New Monkland and Bothwell Church graveyard).  If you wished to purchase a digital image of the gravestone, I think it cost about £5.

Anyone help me out?????

Lanarkshire / GOTHSKIRK (Dunsyre)
« on: Sunday 18 October 09 21:54 BST (UK)  »
My 7 x GGF William Gothskirk from West Linton married Isobel Leishman in Dunsyre in 1717.  They went on to have 6 sons, yet today this name seems to have disappeared.
Has anyone else come across this name in their research?

I haven't found Wm's birth yet.

There were also Gothskirk's living in West Calder around 1650's.

England / NAMING PATTERN (was this used in England)
« on: Sunday 27 September 09 19:13 BST (UK)  »
I am not very familiar with English records, most of my research has been done in Scotland.

Can someone tell me if the naming pattern was used in England or was it just used in Scotland.

Thanks

Heather
