London and Middlesex / Who was Abraham Lewis aka Judah Nathan born c1815 Aldgate?
« on: Tuesday 23 January 24 05:31 GMT (UK)  »
Abraham Lewis was tried at Middlesex Gaol on the 17th Aug 1833 and convicted of stealing a silk handkerchief. He was transported to Australia on the "Fairlie", arriving in New South Wales on the 15th Feb 1834. He was a barber by trade, had a crippled right leg and 18 years old. His father gave evidence at the trial and stated that he, too, was a barber and had lived in the same house in Aldgate for 22 years.
Abraham married Johanna Sullivan at Windsor, NSW, Australia in 1845. NSW BDM gives surname LEWES. The following year they had a daughter, born Rachel Lewis at Windsor. Abraham and Johanna parted company in the early 1850's and Abraham went on to live a life of petty crime. He took his own life by jumping off the Holdsworthy Bridge near Liverpool, NSW on the 16th Jan 1896. He was 81 years old and newspaper reports state that he was the oldest living Jewish convict.
On the NSW BDM, his name was recorded at time of death as LOUIS NATHAN. Whilst living in Sydney, he carried on his trade as a barber and was known as "Louey the Barber", also Judah Nathan and Hugh Nathan.
I would really like to find out who the parents of Abraham Lewis are. My brickwall is my paternal great great grandmother, Rachel Nathan. I have no idea who her parents are. All I know is, she was supposed to be Jewish. She married my great great grandfather, James Mullins at the Presbyterian Church in Sydney on the 19th March 1862. The witnesses were Johanna Nathan and Dorindah Nathan. Rachel was aged 17 and the certificate states she was born at Windsor, NSW. I have searched the NSW BDM and there is no birth recorded for a Rachel Nathan. I have looked at every record for a Rachel born at Windsor for around 1846 and the only name which rings any bells or sounds Jewish is the birth of Rachel Lewis to Abraham and Johanna.
I have had my DNA tested and it shows that I am 4% Jewish. My father's only brother is 7% Jewish...working back from this, it would mean that Rachel would have beeen 50% Jewish, so that perhaps Abraham and Johanna were her parents kind of fits my theory.
I have a 50 cM DNA match with a descendant from (Mark) Mordecai Nathan and his wife Frances Isaacs, through their son Joseph Nathan who married Elizabrth Levy. These families lived in the Spitalfields area of London. I also have lower DNA matches with other families associated with the Nathan/Isaacs offspring.
So what I'm wondering is how can I tie Abraham Lewis in with the Nathan family from Spitalfields....why was he also known as Judah Nathan?? Were the family once known as Nathan and changed to Lewis?? I can't seem to find any barbers on the 1841 census to fit the profile for Abraham's father, maybe he'd died by then. Everyone seems to be general dealers.
Does anyone agree that my great great grandmother, Rachel Nathan, could be Abraham's daughter?
Would love to hear your thoughts.
Cheers, Deb

Suffolk Lookup Requests / WEYBREAD Baptism Lookup Please 16th July 1831
« on: Tuesday 14 March 17 11:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I was wondering if someone could kindly confirm a baptism please. On familysearch.org I found the baptism of ELIZA MIKINS, at Weybread on 16th July 1831, father James, mother Susan. I'm hoping this is actually the baptism of ELIZA WISKINS/WHISKINS. I'm having great difficulty tracking down her baptism.....all her brothers were baptised at Weybread to parents JAMES WISKINS/WHISKINS and SUSAN LARTER. The year 1831 would seem to fit with my research. Any other information found in this entry would be very much appreciated.

« on: Monday 15 June 15 15:41 BST (UK)  »
I would be most grateful if someone could look up the marriage of Hannah Bella Mather to Thomas Burnie on 15 Jun 1871 at Hendon Parish Church. I need to determine if Hannah is my correct lady, so particularly interested in details of her father and witness names.
Many thanks,
Deb

Hi,
Been researching my Peachey relatives from Burwell, Cambridgeshire. James Peachey  married Ann Laurence 11th Sep 1810 Burwell - they are my 4x great Grandparents. It is claimed that his father is Edward William Peachey. I have seen a typed copy of Edward William Peachey's will on-line ( he died 13th Feb 1805, Burwell) and before the actual will, whoever transcribed it, has also typed the names and birth year of all Edward's children. James' name and birth year do not appear among these names, yet he is included on several trees on Ancestry and other websites as one of the sons of Edward William Peachey and Ann Parr (married 4th May 1782 Burwell) - these tree owners, are claiming he is the James Peachey born 31 Dec 1785 in Burwell, Cambridgeshire and baptised 3 Feb 1786. This baptism can be found on Ancestry under England & Wales, Non-Conformist and Non-Parochial Registers, 1567-1970.

Piece 0262: Burwell, High Town (Independent), 1748-1836:

Feb 3rd 1786 Baptized James Peachey who was Born December 31, 1785

There are 2 other Peachey baptism entries immediately prior to this entry ie, they were all baptised on the same day:

Feb 3rd 1786 Baptised Mary Peachey who was born September 20, 1783
Feb 3rd 1786 Baptised Joseph Peachey who was born October 26, 1784
Six entries later, there is another Peachey baptism:
July 20 1787 Baptised Mary Peachey, the daughter of Joseph Peachey.
On the next page, another Peachey baptism:
Jan 3rd 1789 Baptised John Peachey

Looking at these entries, one could draw the conclusion that all entries were for the same family - the first Mary died and then another daughter was born naming her Mary again. The Joseph being named after the father etc and the fact that 3 children were all baptised on the same day.

Getting back to the trees on Ancestry etc for Edward William Peachey, these are the children named as his:
Elizabeth Peachey born 1783 Burwell
Susan Peachey born 25th April 1784
MY JAMES PEACHEY born 31st December 1785
Edward William Peachey born 6th May 1786
Phillip Peachey born 8th December 1788
Mary Ann Peachey born 1795 Burwell
Joseph William Peachey born 1797
George Peachey born 1799
Sarah Ann Peachey born 1801

I find it highly unlikely that the birth of Edward William Peachey junior could have happened so quickly after the birth of my James - one baby born the end of December and then another born just 5 months later?? I don't think so! Also the other children who were baptised with James on the same day, ie Mary and Joseph Peachey....they don't appear as siblings of James on these trees. It just doesn't gel. Is it possible that someone has just happened upon this entry for James, attached him to Edward and Ann Peachey as parents and everything has snowballed since then with everyone jumping on the band-wagon and attaching him to these parents?

There is no doubt that James Peachey and Ann Laurence are my 4 x Great Grandparents. I am descended from their first born child, Ann (born 1st July 1813, Burwell). I am now beginning to wonder if the James Peachey born 31st December 1785 is in fact MY James Peachey who married Ann Laurence. These are the ages I know that he gives:

James Peachey marriage to Ann Laurence 11th September 1810. His given age is 20.
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: M13853-3 , System Origin: England-ODM , GS Film number: 990400

1841 Census Burwell (Class: HO107; Piece: 73; Book: 2; Civil Parish: Burwell; County: Cambridgeshire; Enumeration District: 8; Folio: 21; Page: 36). He and his wife Ann are both listed as age 50 and living with them are their two young.est children, William 15 and Thomas 10.

1861 Census Henrietta, Monroe County, New York, United States - James is living with his married daughter, Elizabeth Mason, her husband Michael and their children. James Peachey's given age is 71.

I have been told that the 1851 Census for Burwell has been lost and I cannot find James and his wife on the shipping records.

So....my question is, can anyone shed some light onto who my James Peachey's parents are? I'm seriously thinking it's not Edward William Peachey and Ann Parr and am now wondering if it's the Joseph from the parochial baptism records.... that James may seem a little old for my James. Any ideas? Perhaps someone can do a marriage look-up and see if the parents are named?

In case anyone wants to know, the children of James Peachey and Ann Laurence are:
Ann Peachey born 1st July 1813 Burwell
Elizabeth Peachey born 1816 Burwell
James Peachey Junior born 16th August 1817 Burwell
Mary Ann Peachey born 1821 Burwell
William Peachey born 1821 Burwell
Thomas Peachey born 1829 Burwell

Spelling for Peachey has also been Peachy and Petchy.

Thanks, Deb

Hi,
Could someone please tell me which Civil parish Burwell falls under in the 1851 Census? It is listed as a civil parish in the 1841 census but not so in 1851. I need to locate my Peachey relatives, James senior and James junior prior to their departure for New York and settling in Monroe County. I can locate them both in Burwell, 1841 census , (James junior is wrongly transcribed as James Deachrey), but can't find them in 1851. James junior (age 35), arrives New York, 12th April 1854 on the "New World" with two sons, James 11 and Henry 9. His wife Ann, (formerly Campbell) departs with the rest of the family on the " Albert Gallatin", arriving New York on the 9th August 1854. I can't find James senior in the shipping records - he would have left with wife Ann, formerly Laurence. It has been said he arrived New York some time between 1852 and 1854.
Any info would be appreciated,
Deb

Durham Lookup Requests / Benjamin Mather Will/Probate Lookup
« on: Thursday 29 May 14 01:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I was wondering if it was possible for the following will to be accessed by anyone kindly willing to help me. I understand a copy can be made available in the reading room at Durham University Library special collections, Palace Green. Info as follows:

Benjamin MATHER, chain-maker, of Malings Rigg in Sunderland near the sea in the county of Durham [Sunderland, County Durham]

Date of probate: 7 November 1837

    will, 30 April 1834 (DPRI/1/1837/M10/1-2)
    registered copy of will, 30 April 1834 (DPRI/2/47 p541-542)

I have been waiting for the digital image to be made available on familysearch.org but it seems this undertaking is still a work in progress. As I live in Australia, accessing these records is difficult. I would be most appreciative of any help.

Kind regards,
Deb

« on: Thursday 30 May 13 11:03 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I was wondering if anyone can tell me which enumeration district Sparkbrook is in, in the '41 census for Birmingham. I know it is in the Parish of Aston, and thought it had it's own enumeration district, but evidently not!

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / William Lowe 1824 Burial Birmingham Look-up Please
« on: Wednesday 29 May 13 12:03 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I was wondering if anyone would be so kind in assisting me with my inquiry. I have found a burial on familysearch and suspect it to be a family member _

William Lowe buried 15th Feb Birmingham Warwick England age 33. The batch no. is  B01966-5 from England Deaths and Burials, 1538-1991.

Is there any more that I can find out about this entry? Would  there be any more details about this burial eg calling, parents names etc. Would I be able to find the actual church/cemetery where the burial took place? I suspect the cause of death was suicide, if it is my man - would there be anything in the local papers of the time?

I would be most grateful for any assistance,

Deb

Shropshire / Thomas Lowe Beckbury and Shifnal
« on: Thursday 23 May 13 08:59 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone can help with my inquiry.
Thomas Lowe was baptised 19th August 1781 Codsall to parents Edward Lowe & Ann Read. In 1817 we find Thomas in financial difficulty:

Leeds Intelligencer, Monday 3rd Feb 1817
BANKRUPTS (with the description copied from the London Gazette, Sat Jan 18)
Thomas Lowe, formerly of Codsall, in the county of Stafford, but now at Beckbury in the county of Salop, corn-dealer d.c. (Feb 12, 13 at the Star Hotel Shiffnal, March 8 at the Bradford Arms, Ivetfy Bank (Att. Brown Shiffnal)

I believe the following baptisms to be Thomas's children: Frances D Lowe (also states born June 1813), Edward S Lowe, William S Lowe, Thomas S Lowe. All baptised on the same day at Codsall 12th October 1818. Mother is given as "Mary".

Then we have:
Louisa Lowe baptised 12th March 1822 Beckbury
Joseph Lowe baptised 22nd February 1824 Beckbury
Again parents are Thomas and Mary.

I have no doubt all children are siblings and the children of the same Thomas Lowe because I have the will of Joseph Lowe, Draper of Shifnal, proved 21st Feb 1857. He is a bachelor and leaves everything to his mother (unnamed) and sisters Frances Barker and Louisa Butterton.

Frances Lowe married John Barker (a minister) at Shifnal in 1839
Louisa Lowe married John Butterton (an artist) at Shifnal in 1850

On the '51 census Louisa states she is born Beckbury 1824 and in 1855 leaves for Philadelphia with husband and settles in New Jersey
Frances Barker states on various censuses she is born Shifnal and the '91 census Wellington she is born 1813 Beckbury.

In the '41 Census Shifnal, we find Mary Lowe (spelt LAWE), baker,  age 50 living with daughter Louisa. Also living with them is Lydia Scarratt. On the same page we have Ann Edmonds (stationer), living with Fanny Scarratt.

In the '51 Census Shifnal, Frances Barker, daughter of Thomas and Mary Lowe is visiting the above mentioned Ann Edmonds who is still a stationer.
In the '61 Census Shifnal, Frances Barker is now a widow and it seems she has taken over the above business as she is now a "stationer".

I thought the Lowe women were very chummy with the Scarratt women. I suspected Ann Edmonds may have been a Scarratt and sure enough:
Ann Scarrott married Amos Edmonds 7th November 1822 Shifnal.

So this is my theory: I suspect that Ann Scarratt, Lydia Scarratt, Fanny Scarratt and Mary Lowe are all sisters

I did find the following two births:
Mary Scarrot baptised 22nd October 1781 Ashton Street Baptist Shifnal, parents William and Ann.
Ann Scarrott baptised 25th June 1783 Ashton Street Shifnal, father, William.

I was hoping to find Lydia and Fanny on later censuses to determine if they were unmarried sisters or in fact sisters-in-law, but they died:
Fanny Scarott died Shifnal , Sep quarter 1848.
Lydia Scarott died Shifnal , March quarter 1851.

In the '51 Census Shifnal, Mary Lowe is now a confectioner, aged 68, born Shifnal. She is a widow and suspect she would have been in '41 also as there was no sign of husband Thomas. In the '51 Census, age 78, proprietor of houses and born Bridgnorth. She doesn't appear on the censuses after this and I have narrowed her death down to two:
Mary Lowe died Wellington, Shropshire 1865 September Quarter Vol 6a, Page 544 (daughter Frances was living here in '81 and '91) or
Mary Lowe died 1862 Newport, Shropshire June Quarter Vol 6a Page 491.

There is a death of a Thomas Lowe, Shifnal 1838 June Quarter Vol 18 Page 121. We know he was alive when Joseph was born Beckbury 1824, so his death is somewhere between 1824 and '41.

My problem is I can't find an appropriate marriage to a Mary. You would expect it to be local if Mary is from Shifnal/Bridgnorth as stated on the censuses. Three of the children have the middle initial S. None of them have an R for Read after the paternal grandmother, so could the S be after the moher's surname? I would love for it to be "Mary Scarratt". There is a marriage of a Thomas Lowe to a Mary Sennott at Aston Juxta Birmingham 24th June 1813. Sennott kind of looks like Scarratt and we know what can happen with transcription errors, but why would they travel to Birmingham to marry?

So, who did Thomas Lowe marry, and when did Thomas die? If all else fails, details should be on Mary Lowe's death certificate, but which one should I order? Would there be any headstone transcriptions available?

I would be so grateful for any assistance with my dilemma!

Deb (Sydney, Australia)
