World War One / Enrolment numbers and kit - Sheffield and Grimsby
« on: Wednesday 08 June 11 19:59 BST (UK)  »
If you lived in Grimsby or Sheffield which army regiment would you have likely joined?
I have a knife issued to John (Jack) Brannon number on it 963058, who I think lived in Sheffield area, and a pair of woolly underpants issued to a man surname Shaw from Grimsby number 1144302.
Were the numbers consecutive to the individual regiment, or nationwide?

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Abraham Banks Chester Dentist?
« on: Friday 27 August 10 19:09 BST (UK)  »
A B Chester was born in 1901 in Malham Moor Yorks. Does anyone know where he could have studied dentistry possibly in the 1920/30's?
Does anyone know if there is access on-line to dentist lists of about that time, or would I have to write to the British Dental Association?
Thanks for you help

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Samuel Pigeon born 1777 Yorkshire
« on: Sunday 26 July 09 12:45 BST (UK)  »
Need to find anyone with interests in the name Pigeon - or the other ways of spelling it! I have Samuel marrying Elizabeth Birkinshaw 24 October 1768 Catherdral St Peters Sheffield IGI M007756, and no other mentions of him at all. I added the name to my interests and it didn't even come up matching anything. He had a son William b1797 who married Hannah Hernden (or Bradbury according to the IGI C150523) and that's a bit of a mystery too. Anyone got any ideas please?

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Abraham Banks Chester in Kirkby Malham
« on: Friday 02 January 09 20:45 GMT (UK)  »
A B Chester was born in 1901 in Kirkby Malham Yorks and married Edith M Fielden in 1927, in Skipton,  and had Peter 1930 Wharfdale.
He married again and had another son in Warsop Notts, and lost contact with his sons, who were mentioned in the obit. He used to be a dentist, and died in about 1968 when his son was about 3 years old. I know we need a death and a marriage cert at least, but until they come I wondered if anyone knew anything about this family?
Thanks for looking

Nottinghamshire / Gordon Boys Home Nottingham
« on: Monday 27 March 06 12:45 BST (UK)  »
Why was this institution started?
Where was it in Nottingham?
Do any records exist of the boys who were 'left' there?
If a boy was born in 1890-1910, and the boy was given a surname, would records exist of the birth name?
Sorry to sound so cryptic, but the boy was given the surname Allen, told he looked like Farmer Allen and that's all we know.
Thanks for looking!

England / No marriage, no bans, special licence?
« on: Monday 20 March 06 13:40 GMT (UK)  »
If couples didn't have their bans read out, cos they weren't in church, there is no ref in the GRO index for that marriage date, can they get married under a special licence wherever they want?
I've seen the parish film with a large cross thru the bans, written to the register office for the cert and they have no record of it - so if they did get married where else can I look?
They did lie in the 1881 census saying they were married, but the IGI seems to have taken a date from the bans and recorded it as a marriage. I need a marriage cert to tell me who his father is, and I'm not having much luck! HELP!! :'(

Lincolnshire / Barnsdale man Claypole railway suicide
« on: Tuesday 14 March 06 20:28 GMT (UK)  »
Joseph Barnsdale died Aug 28 1910, we think, by throwing himself in front of a train at Claypole crossing. Any ideas as to where I might find a post mortem, or inquest by the 'Rail Police' if such an organisation existed? Where would I find a newspaper cutting? Not many people doing the Barnsdale name - none in the Lincs FHS!!!!
Thanks for your anticipated help!!

Technical Help / IGI convert to spreadsheet?
« on: Monday 20 February 06 13:01 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know how to convert the info on the Family Search site into Xcel spreadsheets? Put the batch number in the bottom, no surname and the register filmed under that ref comes up with all the names. Now I need to know how to convert that into a spreadsheet, so I can 'record' my own parish register.
Some clever person out there must know!!  Thanks
