Technical Help / Help!
« on: Wednesday 24 May 23 18:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi Folks,

I am using a 4-year old Lenovo laptop, it works fine and I've never had any problems with it.
At the time of purchase, I also bought a Touro portable storage unit, which I've used successfully over the past 4 years. However, I tried to access it today and, although the laptop recognises it and can even tell me how much storage space is left on it, I cannot open it. There's no icon or any other indication of how to get into it.  Any ideas?

Lanarkshire / Wishawtown Relief/Thornlie Church Deaths
« on: Tuesday 08 November 22 12:07 GMT (UK)  »
I have finished transcribing about 270 names from death records held at the National Records of Scotland belonging to Wishawtown 1st Relief Church. This church was founded about 1822 and was later to become known as Thornlie Parish Church, Wishaw. The NRS ref: is CH3/1219/2
The list begins at 1833 and ends at 1846 but I did find another 25 entries among the roll of Communicants (who were marked as deceased) and some of these go as far as 1853.

The entries range from simply a name, sometime just "child of so-and-so" but others give names, age, occupation, cause of death and abode. You may be lucky!
I was surprised to find church members from some distance away, quite a few from Dalziel parish and Shotts (including Cleland).

I'll happy to do look-ups for anyone.

Scotland / It Pays to Check the Original Records!
« on: Friday 23 September 22 23:14 BST (UK)  »
This is an entry from the parochial records of the parish of Fowlis Wester in Perthshire.
The page has baptisms and Banns of marriage from 1742. This particular entry caught my eye, although it wasn't what I was looking for on the page.
It is an entry for Banns of marriage dated 25th November 1742. The ink is different in the second part of this entry because it was added sometime after July 1743.

It reads - "William Thomson in ye parish of Methven & Ann Haly a native of this parish".
(and there it should have ended).
"He was execute(d) July following for murdering his brother David coming from Edinburgh".

How many times have most of us checked the OPR's on the Scotlandspeople free pages without spending 6 credits to check the original entries? I know that I've done it so many times!

Lanarkshire / Headstone Pictures Avondale Parish Burial Ground Strathaven
« on: Friday 02 September 22 22:29 BST (UK)  »
I have photographs of the following stones, taken August 2022. Generally speaking the names are listed male + female couples but with exceptions, usually siblings instead of a wife.
Occasionally I have included a place name within the parish, also an occupation and, when a date appears, it indicates the earliest date on that stone or sometimes it is the only date.
These are only a small percentage of the stones in the burial ground. It is very easy to find, directly opposite Strathaven castle, it is well kept and the parking is good. Situated on a steep slope.

Scotland / McGuigan & Dowdall Marriage 1938 Glasgow
« on: Sunday 02 August 20 18:12 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know of any descendants of PAUL McGUIGAN and JEANIE BRYDEN DOWDALL who were married in the district of Springburn, Glasgow on 2nd July 1938?

Jeanie died in Glasgow in 1999 aged 89 years. There is a death on SP for a Paul McGuigan aged 55 years in the registration district of Bonhill & Renton (Dunbartonshire) in 1961 which may or may not be him.

I have something personal to this couple that was presented to them on their wedding day and would be happy to give it to anyone who can prove a connection. I am not related to either of them in any way.

Dunbartonshire / Dumbarton Cemetery
« on: Monday 27 July 20 18:34 BST (UK)  »
Some ancestors of mine were in Dumbarton town from about 1890 onwards. I have a few dates of death and would like to find burial places for them. Does anyone know how easy it is to get results from the local council on this subject? Any idea of the charges?
Thank you in advance.

Donegal / Tullyfern parish place name
« on: Monday 27 July 20 18:28 BST (UK)  »
I am researching the Kerr/Carr/Keir family from County Donegal.
I have births in the 1860's at Cooladerry, district of Fannett, Registrar's district of Milford. I can only find Cooladerry near Magheradrumman, would this be the same place?
Also, I have a marriage in 1864 at the Fannet Meeting House, parish of Tullyfern. The groom is Andrew Kerr from Kerrykeel. Would it be stretching it too much to say that Kerrykeel and Cooladerry were the same place with different spellings?
Also, what religion would they have been to be married in a Meeting House? The Kerr's of the next generation (from a sibling of Andrew's) were Catholic.

Lanarkshire / Glasgow street query
« on: Sunday 12 July 20 17:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi Folks,

Anyone have any idea where Ropework Lane would have been? I'm looking at a date around the 1870's and I imagine it would have been fairly inner-city.

Cheers ..... Lodger

Lanarkshire / Road Traffic Fatal Accident Glasgow 1964
« on: Thursday 19 December 19 21:40 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching a friend's family tree and have found one of her family who was killed in Glasgow late on Hogmanay 1963 and was pronounced dead at 1 p.m. on January 1st 1964.
I feel sure this accident would have warrented a report in the Glasgow Herald or Evening Times, does anyone have access to these records? Please PM me for the details.
