The Common Room / Hangings and Cockfighting (New Q)
« on: Monday 24 January 11 13:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm just after a bit of advice and hopefully a point in the right direction with some examples.

I am after any examples or insight into the death penalty between 1700 and about 1850 in the UK, well, England really.

I have started a creative writing course and for my end project I have decided to concentrate on the last few days of someone in York Castle, awaiting his fate, "to be hung by the neck until dead".

I recently bought the "Tyburn Tales: The Criminal Chronology of York Castle " book http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tyburn-Tales-Criminal-Chronology-Castle/dp/0752455370 which gives a summary of crimes and their executions and am going to focus on a character in there (actual person tbc).

So, I am just after any links to websites which will help me to 'flesh out' the process; the people, the hangmen, the prisons, the process.

Any help, gratefully recieved.

Thanks.

Hiya,

Just researching a gt gt uncle on Ancestry, can't find him anywhere on 61 and 71 censuses though. can anyone help?

* He appeared in the census on 3 April 1881 in Linstead Parva. On 3 April 1881 he was a Labourer in Linstead Parva.
* He appeared in the census on 5 April 1891 in Linstead Parva. On 5 April 1891 he was a Farm Labourer in Linstead Parva.
* He appeared in the census on 31 March 1901 in Linstead Parva. On 31 March 1901 he was a Farm Labourer in Linstead Parva.

Any help, as ever, much appreciated. :)

The Common Room / Missing family member?
« on: Sunday 29 August 10 12:07 BST (UK)  »
I have always been a little bit stumped about my my Thurston family.

On the 1911 census, my gt gt grandparents (John and Jemima) have had 10 children, of which 6 are alve and 4 have died.

I have found 9 of their children quite easily on the censuses (albert, arthur, annie, john, agnes ann, kate eliza, herbert james, stephen and daisy) but the last one has always evaded me, until this morning when I went back over some parish registers and found ALBERT JAMES who was baptised 02.08.1885. Great.

But, I can't find anything else about him. There's no evidence of him any the censuses with the rest of the family, and ancestry doesn't throw up anything death.

Can anyone help me please?

Armed Forces / Can I find out about an ancestor in Garrison Artillery in India?
« on: Sunday 22 August 10 21:41 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I have been told that an ancestor of mine spent a time in the 'Garrison Artillery' in India.

Is it possible to find anything about his time there? (Not really sure what I expect to find, if anything!).

He was in barracks in the UK in 1891 as "gunner, royal artillery" but then back as an ag lab in 1901.

His name is Arthur John Thurstpn, born 1871 in Linstead.

The Common Room / Question about 1911 census
« on: Monday 09 August 10 21:50 BST (UK)  »
I have just recently subscribed to the 1911 census after a year or so away from genealogy.

I have downlaoded a certain census page, nowhere on it does it say the the address, other than the village, yet, at the tip of the page it says "Manor Farm".

Just wondering if this is accurate as don't see why it's not on the main page.

Sorry for stupid questions.

World War One / Has anyone used fourteeneighteen for WW1 research
« on: Tuesday 27 July 10 11:44 BST (UK)  »
I'm sorely tempted to use fourteeneighteens research service.

Just wondering if anyone has used the service before? Would you recommend it?

I have my gt grandfathers military records from ancestry but I am extremely interested in the narrative behind it. Has anyone had one of these before?

Sorry for questions, just want to make sure i make the right decision.  :)
