London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Alexander Bell 1851 Census Lookup
« on: Sunday 11 September 11 08:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I have an Alexander Bell who emigrated to Canada before 1861. I think he came alone.
In 1861, he went through an adult baptism in Quebec, giving his date of birth as
18 March 1840, London, England and parents as Thomas and Elizabeth Bell.
I'd be very grateful, if some kind soul could find this family in the 1851 Census. Sorry that I can't give a more specific address, but all I have is London.

Thanks in advance,
Carmela

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / CDV in Need of Improvement
« on: Thursday 25 August 11 09:21 BST (UK)  »
If it is at all possible, could someone please do something about my gg grandfather's face ?
It may be just a poor quality photo or it has faded with time, but his facial features, particularly his eyes are very blurred. I don't expect miracles, but I know they frequently happen on this board. :)

Thanks in advance,
Carmela

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Date Please
« on: Wednesday 10 August 11 07:51 BST (UK)  »

One for Jim, I think.
I am trying to decide which of two brothers is the young man in this CV. There was quite an age gap, so date of photo would really help. I know  mens' clothes can be hard to date , but this chap looks like a style-conscious type.

All I can find on the photographer is that he was in business at 59 North St. Brighton before 1862 and still there in 1867 (Kelly')

Not important, but any ideas about the hands? They look really strange, as if he was wearing big padded gloves.

Many thanks,
Carmela

Canada / Finding Living Person in Canada
« on: Thursday 28 July 11 10:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,
While there is a wealth of info on RC about finding living people in the UK, I can't find anything that applies to Canada and has no UK connection. A friend has asked me for help
in finding someone in Quebec (probably Montreal). ( why do people confuse genealogists with private detectives ?) This is a birth father hunt.
The person in question was born in the 1940s, so probably alive. I have full name .dob, pob,
marriage info. Unfortunately he has  very common French names. (dozens of them in every phone directory). Salvation Army and RC Church won't help.

Anybody have any suggestions ? I am stumped.

Technical Help / Need Help with Podcast
« on: Thursday 28 July 11 09:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am having trouble with a podcast on the Sonning and Eye Society website. I know nothing about podcasts. Apparently it is supposed to play in itunes. When I click on "view on Itunes"
(Don't know why it says view as it is audio) It does appear in Itunes and is supposedly playing, but there is no sound.  I turned the volume up...nothing.
I am out of my depth here as I only use Itunes to listen to radio.
Could one of you techno-wizards please take a look at the website and tell me what to do.
I would love to hear the two interviews with Catherine Cooper; she was my mother's cousin. She was almost 95 when the interview was recorded.

Cornwall / PARSONS Lawhitton
« on: Thursday 11 March 10 08:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,
For some years, I have been trying off and on, to find the origin of a Robert Parsons who emigrated to the USA in 1853. Robert was a Methodist minister in the US, but may have been a lay preacher prior to his emigration. He married
a gg aunt of mine, but this marriage took place in the US and I cannot find any record of it.
According to two obituaries that I have recently found, he was born in Aug. or Sep 1831 in Cornwall. Cornwall OPC has the following baptismal entry from Lawhitton PR.

Robert Parsons bapt. 04 Nov.1831, Lawhitton, Cornwall
s/o John Parsons and Mary
Residence of parents: Higher Hexworthy
Rank or profession of father: yeoman

I have tried to follow this Robert through census records. In 1841, he is not with his parents, but there were two possible siblings, John 20 and Francis 5.  I did find a Robert Parsons, age 8 boarding with a school mistress. ( can't find my copy at the moment). There were 2 or 3 other children in the house, perhaps a small 'dame school'.

In 1851 there is a Robert Parsons, 19, draper's asst., born Lawhitton, boarding with his employer, a Joseph Geake, linen draper ( HO107/1899  Folio 359  p. 65 ).  I cannot find him in 1861 or later. The name is too common to identify a death.

This Robert born in Lawhitton with father a yeoman farmer looks like a good candidate since the family were probably able to afford to give him some education and he seems to disappear after 1851; however I have no proof. American records are useless as they do not give any information beyond England as birth place. I am hoping that someone else is researching this family and can tell me  if Robeert died or disappeared/emigrated (or I just failed to find him)

There was one other Robert Parsons born 1832 in Stoke Climsland, but I managed to eliminate him.

If anyone feels like searching census records to see if they can find him, it would be good to know if I am right or wrong about his disappearance after 1851.

Radnorshire / Lost Llandeilo PR Turns Up
« on: Sunday 13 December 09 07:58 GMT (UK)  »

Apologies, if this has already been posted somewhere on RC
or if I have put it in the wrong place.

Just read this on the BBC site.

The parish register from  Llandeilo Graban, near Builth Wells, dating from 1669 to 1812 has mysteriously turned up in the Midlands. It was returned to the church and will soon be digitised and made available to the public.  Good news for anyone with ancestors who lived in Llandeilo Graban.
