Occupation Interests / Help with Merchant Navy Apprentice Indenture record
« on: Thursday 15 June 17 00:13 BST (UK)  »
I recently found a record on Anc in the UK, Apprentices Indentured in Merchant Navy, 1824-1910 (from the National Archives BT 150/1-53) and was hoping for some advice.

I've attached a snippet and my fellow is Edward Peter Mallandain. The Indenture Expires value is crossed out in all of the 20 odd records (except one where it is noted the indenture was cancelled). Can I assume this means he completed the apprenticeship? I haven't been able to find him in any other records on Anc or FindMyPast after this date - any suggestions on how to find more on his career in the Merchant Navy? Is it possible to search by ship name for more information?

Any idea what the initial in the Remarks column mean? Looks like M.L or M.S.

I assumed Edward died due to the lack of records so I was happy to find this but also confused as I know nothing about the Merchant Navy.

Many thanks,
Lynwen

Suffolk Completed Lookup Requests / Weybread lookups
« on: Tuesday 20 April 10 18:22 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for a marriage between Thomas Fulcher and Charlotte (surname unknown) in Weybread c. 1800.  Their first known child was baptised in Weybread in 1802.

I am also looking for Thomas' baptismal record to identify his parents.  According to his burial record, he was born abt 1781 but I am not sure if he was born in Weybread or somewhere nearby.

Thanks,
Lynwen

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Marriage lookup - possibly Norwich
« on: Tuesday 20 April 10 03:15 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for a marriage between Thomas Fulcher and Mary, surname possibly Hunt, in the early 1830s.  Both Thomas and Mary were from Suffolk and lived in Yaxley after their marriage but there is no sign of a marriage in Suffolk.

Mary had family living in Norwich in 1851 so there is a sliver of a chance that they married in Norfolk.  Thomas was born abt 1804 in Weybread and Mary in Yaxley in 1807.

I know it isn't much to go on but I'd appreciate any quick checks to see if something turns up.

Thanks,
Lynwen

Suffolk Completed Lookup Requests / Completed: Marriage Lookup - Yaxley c. 1830
« on: Saturday 17 April 10 18:54 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the marriage of Thomas Fulcher and Mary (surname unknown) in the early 1830s in Yaxley.

Thomas' family moved from Weybread to Yaxley about 15yrs earlier and according to census records, Mary was born in Yaxley.  Thomas was born abt 1804 in Weybread and Mary abt 1807.  Their first daughter was baptised at St Mary Yaxley on 10 Feb 1834 and they remained in Yaxley for the next 60years.

So taking all this into account, I think they likely married in or around Yaxley.  Any help finding the marriage would be greatly appreciated.

Lynwen

Canada Lookup Requests Completed / Winnipeg Free Press - Completed
« on: Sunday 03 January 10 22:53 GMT (UK)  »
Could I ask a favour from someone with an A******* Canada sub?  I am just finishing off some research on the husband of a more distant member of my tree and found a hit on the A* website relating to an article in the Winnipeg Free Press.  I usually do all my look ups at the local library but this item doesn't appear in the search results and I can't seem to find the newspaper records in the Library Edition.

The article relates to Edgar Stowe born in Leeds in 1886 (from Viking, Alta) and appears in the paper on 14 July 1915 - from the snippet, it seems to relate to him being wounded or confirmed as a prisoner of war.  I have his attestation papers (four brothers signed up and all survived!) and various other records but since it is a distant branch by marriage, I don't want to spend the coin for just one record.

Hoping some kind soul will forgive me for being so miserly and take pity on me...... :-[

Thanks,
Lynwen

Canada / Canadian Passenger Lists - Experienced squinter required
« on: Thursday 19 November 09 07:25 GMT (UK)  »
I finally found the passenger list for one of the few Mallandains that made the journey to Canada but I am having trouble reading his occupation on the appalling scan.

Can any other experienced squinters have a look and let me know what you think?

http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e143/e003553473.jpg

His name is Frank Mallandain, 5th from the bottom.  I found him in the 1891 UK Census and he was employed as an Assistant to a Wholesale Stationer (probably his father) and on the UK passenger list, his occupation was 'labourer'.  I am hoping the occupation will give some insight into why he emigrated.  He was travelling on the same ticket as an A.S. Riches of the same age so I assume they were friends.

He was in Tadoussac in 1896, can't find him in 1901, have him on a return trip to England in 1904 (occupation Lumberman) and in Cabano in 1911 working as a photographer of all things!

I don't think the occupation on the scan looks anything like any of the above so I am at a loss.

Thanks in advance,
Lynwen

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Restore family photo c. 1894
« on: Friday 18 September 09 22:27 BST (UK)  »
Could I ask for a restore of this family photo please?  It is the only photo I have of my great-grandmother as a young woman and the only photo of her son Willie.  I think this was taken c.1894 in Victoria, BC.  My grandmother was born in 1889 and her brother in July 1892; the family returned to Canada from Portsea in June 1893 following my great-grandfather's death.  Little Willie looks about 2yrs old hence my guess at the date.

Thanks in advance,
Lynwen

Census and Resource Discussion / Saving 1911 Census images at The National Archives
« on: Sunday 13 September 09 21:11 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know if it is possible to save the 1911 Census images to a flash drive at the National Archives?

I am stopping over in London for a few days and have planned a visit to Kew but I have a lot of look ups to do in a short period of time so I'd like to save the image file rather than print out a hard copy.

Is this possible and if so, any idea how large the image files are?  I'm hoping my 4GB flash drive will be big enough!

Many thanks,
Lynwen
