Yorkshire (West Riding) / Cockroft, Oddy & Robinson
« on: Friday 16 January 09 08:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

Looking for help on connecting Mary Oddy nee Cockroft to James Robinson.  Mary is noted as "cousin" on James death certificate and he was living with her as a boarder after the death of his second wife.

James is a blacksmith and I have found him on the 1861 census with his first wife Hannah UNKNOWN (cannot find them on the 1841 or 1851 census) and son John.  Have him in the 1871, 1881 and 1891 census with his second wife, Isabella.  Isabella died on 19th June 1891.  James is with his "cousin" Mary Oddy nee Cockroft in the 1901 Census and died on 6th January 1902.

Mary is the daughter of Shaddua/Shedeur Cockroft and Hannah Gledhill. She was born on 16th January 1827 in Shelf, Yorkshire, England.  She married Joseph Oddy on 12th April 1846 in the Parish Church, Halifax.

Mary's husband, Joseph Oddy was born in 1826 in Southowram and is I think the son of Miles Oddy and Betty Jagger(??).

How are they connected??  Wouldn't it have to be Mary's fathers sister married James father?  Or is the connection with Joseph Oddy...I cant find it and its driving me crazy!!

Also Shedeur Cockroft...is REALLY unusual name.  I have his marriage and death...but no record of his birth except an IGI reference with his mother as Sally Cockroft.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Europe / German grandfather
« on: Friday 14 December 07 14:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all, I have been reading a lot of the posts tonight on all sorts of topics as I am new to this and had a little heart flutter that you all might be able to help me with my husbands maternal side of the tree (my side's been fairly easy...need a new challenge).

My husbands great grandfather was a man named Richard Herman Smid and according to his marriage certificate dated 1909 he was a seaman and states his birth place as, what looks like, "Staddin, Germany".  He was 40 at the time of his marriage and his parents Carl SMID and Louisa VETHENHEUVE (I think thats how its spelt) were deceased.

I have done a google search for "staddin, germany" and "staddin" and also a map search and cannot find it.

At a loss where to go now...there is no record that I can find on how he got to NSW, Australia (I was hoping such a record would give me further clues to his birthplace) and I cannot find his death certificate either.

I attach part of his marriage certificate for you to see, perhaps I am reading it wrong...

Many thanks
