Suffolk Lookup Requests / Ipswich Cemetery look up request
« on: Wednesday 20 April 16 15:59 BST (UK)  »
I was delighted to find via the ancestry site a website called gravestones photos where volunteers photograph graves and you can search for your family member on the site.   If you find an entry that matches your ancestor you can then request a copy of the photograph of the grave stone.

I was lucky enough to find my gt gt grandmothers gravestone that is in Ipswich Cemetery, Old Municipal Section D

Susan Munday burial year 1891.  Age 59.

I can read the top part of the gravestone from the photograph but cant read the bottom part, I wonder if anyone is going to this cemetery and would be kind enough to read the gravestone for me.  I live in Kent and cannot do this myself.

Thank you

England / could people change their surname without formally doing so?
« on: Tuesday 19 April 16 17:25 BST (UK)  »
I have got a very strange situation in my family tree that is confusing me, and I cannot solve.

My great grandmother was called Caroline Mayhew and was born in  1858 to Susan Mayhew out of wedlock (there was no father mentioned on the birth certificate) and was brought up  by her grandparents as Susan  was working away, and therefore was brought up as a  MAYHEW.  When caroline married in 188o she says her name is Caroline Fox and her father is George Fox an Engineer.

Her mother Susan was single in the 1871 census, and was calling herself Susan Mayhew  but when she marries in 1874 she says her name is Susan Fox a widow.  She married a william Munday in 1874 and after the marriage she  was calling herself Susan Munday which is her married name.

I have not found a marriage between Susan Mayhew and a George Fox between 1871 when Susan was a Mayhew and 1874 when she said she was a widow at her marriage.

Susan had another child out of wedlock in 1865 and he was brought up as George Mayhew until Susan married William Munday and then he was called George Munday, which is his stepfathers surname, but when he marries himself in 1888 he is calling himself George Fox.  He says his father is George Fox a deceased soldier.

So Susan, the mother, Caroline and George her children are all changing their name in different years to fox.  I have not been able to find a George Fox the father, as I dont know when he was born, or where he was born.

Could Caroline and George change their surname to Fox without any formal documentation?

If Susan the mother had not actually married George Fox, would she have had to provide documents to prove her identity in 1874 when she married?

Very confusing.  Who is George Fox Senior?
Any thoughts?

Suffolk Lookup Requests / Quarter Sessions for Coddenham 18
« on: Monday 11 April 16 11:37 BST (UK)  »

Can anyone help me with some research with Quarter Sessions please. I have never researched this particular area before.

I am trying to find out if my ancestor Susan Mayhew who is the mother of  Caroline Mayhew who was a base child born 18 August 1860 in Coddenham Suffolk applied for maintenance from the father George Fox.

I understand from my friends on Roots Chat that there may be mention of a maintenance or affiliation order in the quarter sessions for Coddenham Suffolk, or in the coddenham churchwarden accounts that susan may have applied for.

I cannot find a marriage of Susan Mayhew to a George Fox, and Caroline starts to use the surname Fox instead of Mayhew between 1871 and 1880.    Susan went on to have another illegitimate child who was called George Fox.

I would like to find out if Susan Mayhew applied for any maintenance for her daughter.  Susan was a servant and left her daughter in the care of her own parents in Coddenham whilst she was working away.

Where can I find these documents please?  Thank you

Suffolk Lookup Requests / The Street Coddenham
« on: Monday 11 April 16 11:28 BST (UK)  »
Would anyone have an old map of Coddenham Suffolk please.  My ancestors lived in " the Street" Coddenham.  I was lucky enough to visit Coddenham last week but couldnt find "The Street"  There was a High Street.  The census entries dont  have a number of the house.  The family I am researching is George and Susan Mayhew.  Born 1802 Coddenham.   I was wondering whether somebody could help me with this please? They lived in The Street from 1841 to 1882.

Does anyone know if the burials at Coddenham All Saints church have been transcribed please?

I am very lucky to have inherited a few ambrotye photographs of my ancestors. Luckily one has the name of the person written on the reverse of the case, the date taken and where it was taken in 1875.

One of he ambrotype photographs is in a fairly good condition but the one of my gt gt grandfather is of poor quality. The picture itself is very dark, the metal frame is going green, and the left hand side of the picture seems to be perishing. I would dearly love to be able to restore this photo and try and get the image restored to a lighter picture so I can see the details better.  I have tried to scan the picture on my printer scanner, but the image is coming out very black and blurred. Obviously the printer is trying to scan through the glass of the photograph which is not helping!  I cant put the actual picture on roots chat to show you as the image is pitch black!

Also how do I look after these types of photos to preserve them for the future.  I also have photographs that are in little wooden cases that are falling apart and they have velvet in one side of the case.  Do I leave them broken or can I get the cases restored to protect the pictures inside?

Thank you for your advice.
