The Common Room / Spruce girl
« on: Sunday 05 October 08 18:42 BST (UK)  »
Hello

Can anyone tell me the meaning of this phrase?

This is the context I found it in
'Dinah daughter of Elizth Loraman, a spruce girl, born 17 Jan 1805 , bap. 02 Mar 1805'

I'm guessing it means she wasn't married?

Thank you.

World War One / Lincolnshire Regiment
« on: Wednesday 25 June 08 17:18 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I wonder if anyone can give any extra information on the 3/4 battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment?

I'm particularly interested in William Herson who was a private in this regiment, but I believe he must have moved battalions as I think I have found his medal card (service no.s 4810 and 43032) which show he received both the British and Victory medals, which I think means he served in a theatre of war, but from what I can find on 3/4 battalion is that it was a British based only battalion. The family rumours also suggest he was a POW but where isn't known.

Does anyone know if there was a natural progression from 3/4 to a particular battalion? Do the service numbers give any information about what battalion he served in?

Thanks

Julie

Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / William Herson - Baptisms Look Up Please
« on: Sunday 01 June 08 23:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm trying to track down the mother of William Herson (there's no father named on his marriage certificate).
What I know so far: from the censuses he was born circa 1815-1818 at Apethorpe, Northamptonshire. He married Caroline Jones at Woodnewton in 1838, age given as 'full'. His likely death is in 1881, age given as 67, which would be 1814.
I have found a baptism on the IGI 04 Dec 1814, mother given as Rachael Herson, no father named. This would fit in with the marriage certificate and death, but is too early for the censuses unless his age is wrong on the censuses. I can't tie him in with Rachael, other than this record. If this is his mother I think she married a John Kingston on 30 Oct 1817 at Woodnewton, but I can't find either of these in the 1841 census or any subsequent.
Can anyone confirm my findings or suggest an alternative baptism/mother?

Thanks, Julie

Hi can anyone help - my grandmother was in the NAAFI in Exeter, where she met my grandad (a gunner in the RGA) circa 1921 - could anyone help with the possible barracks that they may have been posted at?

Thanks

I'm trying to trace the birth dates of my great grandparents.
The information I have is from their wedding certificate (year 1878):
Robert - of full age when married, residence Moys, father Joseph Ferguson
Annie - of full age, residence Ballyhargan, father John Morton
I've tried Emerald Ancestors with no success.
Can anyone help?

Thanks :)

I'm trying to find out when and where my grandad enlisted in WW1. I've attached his two medal cards - not sure why he has two either - can anyone help with the interpretation of them?

I'm trying to track down where and when my grandad enlisted in WW1. I know he was in the RGA and fought in Mesopotamia. He was born in Moys, Coleraine, Northern Ireland in 1897, so would have been 17 at the outbreak of war. I also have his service number (130821) from his medal card - it also shows another number - 1412086. Can anyone help? ???
