Warwickshire / Birmingham burials and cremations
« on: Saturday 11 November 17 15:09 GMT (UK)  »
At birminghamburialrecords.co.uk biirmingham city council has published a database of around 1.5 million burials and cremations at municipal sites across the city, showing month and year of burial/cremation. Unfortunately they do not include precise dates and the records only extend to a single forename but it is still an extremely useful resource.

It does not include burials within church grounds

Warwickshire / Hanley Place, Guildford St
« on: Thursday 23 February 17 12:51 GMT (UK)  »
The main body of what was Guildford St., Newtown, appears to have been absorbed into Hospital St. after the mid 20th Century clearance. Please can anyone tell me exactly where Hanley Place was?

There is a clear un-named opening on the 1953 OS map directly opposite the end of Porchester St. Can this be Haney Place?

For the purposes of War Memorial research I am seeking information about P/O 182038 Alan William Benting of 617 Squadron, who gave his life in September 1944 and is interred at Enschede, Holland.

Any and all information would be appreciated.

Warwickshire / Gutteridge of Austrey, c.1700
« on: Thursday 06 October 16 12:45 BST (UK)  »
William Gutteridge was born in Austrey c. 1700. He married Mary Taverner in 1720 and they had two children, William and Elizabeth, before moving to Coventry before 1732.

Parish records show the birth of a Thomas Gutteridge in Austrey about 1694 but neither the record of Thomas's or William's birth name their parents. Please can anyone find the parents to help me determine whether they were brothers?

World War Two / Col. Charles William Linford
« on: Wednesday 18 May 16 10:47 BST (UK)  »
Please can anyone tell me anything about the wartime and subsequent service of Col, Charls William Linford (1921-1988)?

I have found a record of the award of a Military Cross to a Captain (109444) Charles William Linford of the Royal Warwicks while serving in Italy in 1945 with the 3rd Bn Royal Garwhal Rifles. Does anyone know whether they are one and the same person?

Devon / Old Paignton
« on: Thursday 28 May 15 18:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks,

I left my childhood home, Paignton, almost fifty years ago and hadn't visited in at least thirty years until a few days ago, for a family occasion. Naturally I went mooching round my old haunts in the vicinity of Lower Polsham Road and the Palace Hotel. I was sad to see that the old family home, Seacroft, on the corner of Steartfield and Norman Roads had disappeared and that only the curtain wall and gates of what was once Oldenburg House on Lower Polsham Road remain. Census returns apppear to suggest that Oldenburg was built some time before 1871, at around the same time as Steartfield, now the Palace Hotel. They also appear to bring into question the accepted wisdom that Steartfield was built for Washington Singer.

Please can anyone tell me:
1, When was Seacroft demolished?
2. Anything at all about Oldenburg House.

If anyone has an image of either which they would be prepared to share I shall be eternally grateful.

Regards,

Keith
