Hi,

Just wondering if anyone can help with this one. I've found an entry in the burial register for St George Hanover Square for 1848. All entries seem to be the same:

Date of event
Age at event
Name of person
Address

Then it's a bit different.

Longitude and Latitude (presumably location of burial?)

Then what I thought were two names, but as I'm going back, it might be further location details?

P. S. Foot is repeated often, followed by a name.
P. S.  Head followed by a name?

Sound like references to body parts?

Could this be a shared grave or maybe the grave it is near??

Any assistance gratefully received,
Michelle

England / Population Figures for Villages in 1981 and 1991??
« on: Tuesday 01 March 16 04:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm doing a One Place Study of Great Hallingbury in Essex. I've got population figures for the village for most decades, but can't find anything for 1981 or 1991. Can anyone point me in the right direction? All I want is basic population of the village in those years, no need for further breakdown.

Cheers,
Michelle

World War One / A.I.F Help - 631 Thomas Guy BELL - Which Battalion/Unit of Service??
« on: Thursday 06 August 15 02:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone,

I'm currently writing a book about all the WW1 service people from/associated with the town of Stockton, NSW, Australia.

I have a problem (a good one!!) that requires more knowledge on reading service records and knowing about military matters than I do.

Thomas' Embarkation Roll lists his unit as 1st Field Artillery Brigade - Brigade Ammunition Coloumn embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board Transport A8 Argyllshire on 18 October 1914.

In the AMF Unit Serving in at Date of Enlistment - it says 16th Battalion.

Now, attestation papers dated Aug 1914 (with unit listed ad 1st Bde Ammun Col) say in:

Question 11 - Previous military service - "16th Battalion - 1 year - Pte".
Question 13 - Previously reject military service - Yes, for Infantry week beginning 19 Aug 1914

I was just sent a photo of Thomas. It appears to have been taken in 1918, probably in Australia (he is wearing a 1914 Rosette on each sleeve). The photo shows what appears to be a battalion patch for the 16th Battalion with an "A" Anzac badge on it.

Now my questions:

1. What would explain the 1yr service in 16th Battalion in 1914?? Is this just incorrect?
2. Could the rejected enlistment be from the 16th? But how?
3. Why would he have 16th Batt patch on at the end of the war when there is no mention of it in he service record? (presuming I'm reading it correctly).
4. His service record says he joined the M.E.F on 4 Apr 1915. Then next note of service isn't until Feb 1916. That's a big gap with nothing happening. On another page in his record it says - "Embarked for Gal Pen on Themistocles Alexandria" 14 Nov 1915 but this is struck through in red with a note "Cancelled" next to it. So, did he get to Gallipoli? What unit was he with at the time?
5. Is the "A" for his service or just denoting 16th Battalion's Gallipoli service.

His record is here - http://soda.naa.gov.au/record/3009080/1

I know that is alot of questions, but I have tried my best to work it out. I just don't have the knowledge, so any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Here is what I have as relates to his military service:

"He enlisted into the 1st Australian Field Artillery Brigade Ammunition Column on 26 August 1914. He had previously attempted to enlist in the Infantry but was rejected. He embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board Transport A8 Argyllshire on 18 October 1914 headed for Egypt, where he served as a driver. In February 1916 he was transferred to the 4th Divisional Artillery at Tel-el-Kelbir. From there he was transferred to Alexandria for transport to Marseilles. He was on active service in France from May 1916 until Sep 1917 with the 1st Divisional Ammunition Column when he took leave in England. He returned to France where he continued to serve throughout 1918 until the end of the war. He returned to Australia under 1914 Furlough in December 1918 aboard the Durham."

Surrey / GREENLAND, Fred A V G - Streatham, Surrey? WW1
« on: Wednesday 18 February 15 01:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm writing a bio of every WW1 service person from my town, Stockton, NSW, Australia.

On our memorial is one: Fred A V G GREENLAND who lists his place of birth as Streatham, Surrey (Parish of Brixton).

I am trying to find his BDM details and I've had no luck. Partly because I can't work out where to look for records!! In 1896 is Streatham parish part of Surrey or London?

I've checked GENUKI and FamilySearch and can't work it out. I can't find the parish in the Surrey or London records on Ancestry or FindMyPast.

I have been able to find a George Alfred Victor GREENLAND from Grafham, Surrey, but this isn't my guy (I've found his military records and the physical description is different and he also survived the war).

But, I am beginning to suspect that maybe the guy I am researching stole the aboves identity (look at initials) when he came to Australia, with just enough differences to make it impossible to track? I haven't been able to find any passenger records for Fred GREENLAND either, which makes me even more suspicious.

So, can someone help me with where I should be looking for Streatham records, so I can check all the possible births to see if I can track him down?

I will cross post to the London board as well.

Cheers,
Laren

England / How To Work Out Families With Most Popular Name in Village!?!
« on: Tuesday 30 December 14 02:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everyone,

Having smashed through a long time brickwall, I've immediately run into another one in the following generation.

My problem is that I'm researching a family from a small village, normally not a problem, but in my case, the family has the most popular name in the village. This is compounded by the fact that they were by about 98% Agricultural Labourers and they all seemed to like naming their kids the same names.

The census' aren't much help as the kids have left home.

I've gotten to the stage where I've basically done family group sheets for every family of this name in the village, going back about 200 years. And I'm trying to work out the lineages for each line (both for my own study and for a one-place study I'm doing).

To break my original brickwall (where both bride and groom have the same last name!), it came down to looking at the witnesses at my direct ancestors marriage and comparing that to the three possible families I had identified. One family had a sister with the same name as the witness. I know it's thin but it was all I could think of. And it won't be of much use further back as no witnesses in the old registers.

I'm after any tips on how to sort the mess out!! I've found the odd bit of evidence in the parish registers (where spouse or parents names are mentioned or an occupation is commented on) but the rest is looking pretty daunting.

Cheers,
Michelle

I'm hoping someone can help me with some basic data from the 1981 and 1991 England Census?

I just need the population for Great Hallingbury, Essex in both those years. I've tried the ONS and NOMIS but can't find it on there.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Cheers,
Michelle

Essex / Great Hallingbury - Any Connections and One-Place Study
« on: Friday 05 December 14 05:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have some distant (both in time and space!) ancestors from Great Hallingbury (SAPSFORD). I've been researching these ancestors and as a result have developed an interest in the village. I'm undertaking a One-Place Study of Great Hallingbury.

Firstly, I would like to let people know about it and secondly, let people know that I'd love any information people might have about the village that they would be willing to share. As I'm in Australia, getting access to original records, photos and books is quite difficult and any assistance would be appreciated.

Thirdly, I'd also love to make contact with anyone researching any Great Hallingbury families.

Also, if anyone is a SAPSFORD, I'd especially love to make contact!!

Caernarvonshire / Family History/Local History Group for Porthmadog??
« on: Tuesday 15 July 14 06:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm wondering which groups (family and/or local history) cover the area of Porthmadog??

As part of a WW1 project I'm working on, I have some information about a Porthmadog native, Llewelyn JONES, who served in the AIF. I'd like to find more information about him and also provide information I've found to any descendents.

Cheers,
Michelle
