Has anyone ever managed to see any adoption papers for parents etc. My father was adopted on the Isle of Wight by his grandparents aged 9 in 1949 but his mother, my grandmother, was always about. When I was younger I always called her 'Auntie' and it wasn't until I was older that I called her Nan when all was explained. My dad died in 2009 and my Nan died earlier this year and of course I never asked her about why he was adopted by her parents. My Dad's biological father has always been a mystery but I have an idea who he might be as I think I have a photo of him. I have my Dad's adoption certificate and his 'new' birth cert but nothing gives me any clue's so I thought I would enquire to see if I could view the papers which may of explained the circumstances of his adoption. I contacted the Family Section of the Court in Newport and the lady there found the records so I was quite hopeful, but it had to be rubber stamped by a judge in Portsmouth and she refused to let me see the papers saying
“ Only an adopted person can see their own adoption file, so Mr **** cannot have any details from this file. This is a standard rule. I hope this clarifies matters.”
Has anyone ever come across this before and is there any other avenues I could follow. I thought that as I was a direct descendant and both the people concerned are dead it would not of been a problem and one of the reasons I wanted to see them was to try and confirm who my grandfather actually was. My Dad's birth is listed on Ancestry but I am not sure if that cert is still available after an adoption
It would be very helpful to know if anyone has been in a similar situation[/b]
