Canada / Joshua Hickman Armstrong
« on: Tuesday 08 May 12 12:28 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help confirm or refute my suppostitions. After my father-in law died recently I have been sorting through some old photos. I found a sepia photo/postcard of a young boy ( maybe 3-6 years old ) and a younger girl.
The writing on the reverse is as follows:
Dear Father
What do you think of little Josh now he is--- a little the Canadian climate must suit him-also his little sister she will soon be as big as him. Wishing you a merry Xmas and a Happy New Year and that you are in good health and will continue so.  ---- kind regards from Jean Josh Tucker and myself.

Fancy not putting her own name ! Anyway Joshua was a common name in my mother -in laws family so I went back to old research and found an aunt of my m-in-l whose marriage I hadn't found

I found Septima Hickman had married in 1909 and one of the names on Free BMD was Thomas Armstrong.  I found the birth of a Joshua Hickman Armstrong in 1910. I cannot find the birth of Jean .
1911 census I found Joshua Hickman aged 11 months in Morpeth Northumberland. I couldn't find Septima but there is an entry for Armstrong  Mrs Tomas  correct age in Morpeth.
I haven't got subs to Ancestry or Find my Past (have to save up or wait for my birthday!) but by looking at the free searches it seems as if Septima, Thomas and Joshua Hickman  Armstrong may have sailed from Liverpool to Halifax Canada in 1911, whether they sailed together or Septima and her son followed later.

It would be great to know if my research is correct or whether I have made up a good story to fit the photo/postcard.

sorry about the long post!

Northumberland / Clark Photographers Blyth

Does anyone have any info about this studio? My father-in-law died recently and we found some photos. The older one has the name and address at the bottom of the photo, the later one is a postcard type with a feint mark on the reverse saying Clark. I wondered if anyone had any dates which may help us identify the people. A few years ago we asked father-in law if he had any photos but he said not many and didn't show us these so an opportunity lost to identify the people. :(

Lancashire / Royal Visit
« on: Wednesday 26 December 07 19:21 GMT (UK)  »
In 1940 the King and Queen inspected troops at Lancaster Barracks, the young Princesses accompanied them. My Dad was stationed there at the time and I am trying to find any reports/photos related to this visit.
Any help much appreciated.

Just wondered what others thought about this subject?
Perhaps we should start a petition on the Downing St Website.

Please can someone remove the creases and maybe make the colour  a little more natural.
This photo was taken at the "while you wait" studio in Blackpool between 1935 and 1938. The colour was added to the photo.
Many thanks

I wonder if anyone can help me find this family in 1851.
Thomas Dean and spouse Sarah, age on 1841 is 30. Their children are
William 12
Martha   8
Ann         7
Thomas   6
John   4
Samuel 3
Sarah    1   (ages as per 1841).
I have found Thomas jnr in 1861 when he is married.  In 1841 the surname was transcribed as Deam but so far I am not having any luck for 1851.

The Lighter Side / Family history v genealogy
« on: Wednesday 06 December 06 17:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone
I am doing a Family History Certificate course. One of the first discussion topics was the difference between family history and genealogy. I must admit I had always thought of  them as different terms for much the same thing (still do in fact!). When the initial question was posed I did look up dictionary definitions and couldn't find any distinction. I feel I am in the minority among the other students and tutors. Much is being made on the course about the difference so I am wondering is it me? Would be interested in other people's views.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Reducing file size
« on: Saturday 25 November 06 13:54 GMT (UK)  »
I have read Cazza's tutorial but I still have a problem.
I scanned a photo recently before reading this excellent advice.
The photo was taken in June on a disposable camera at a wedding. This was the last photo taken of my Mum because she died in August. I was hoping to improve the photo and frame it to give to Dad at Christmas. I have Microsoft Picture It and Ifranview . I need to reduce the file size but still don't know how. Any advice much appreciated.
