Berkshire / The Grange Old Windsor
« on: Saturday 10 November 12 14:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I've just found one of my ancestors Lizzie Piggins (born Whaplode Lincolnshire 1885)  on the 1911 census, she was working as a housemaid at The Grange, Old Windsor. I've looked at the pages before & after the one she's on to try & find out who owned the house or lived there, with no luck so far. The page that gives the name & address says 'The Bothy, The Grange' & it's all other servants listed, it had 42 rooms. All that I found online so far is that The Grange was all that remained of the original castle from King Edward 1's times. Any ideas would be great please.

Renfrewshire / Watt Library Greenock-look up please if possible?
« on: Tuesday 30 October 12 23:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I'm shocked to have just found a death notice for my great x 4 grandfather (John Smith born c1799 Scotland, commercial traveller by trade) on the Watt Library online.  My reason for being shocked is that he died in Moscow USSR! It says 'John Smith, formerly of Greenock died at his son's, Moscow USSR on 17/02.1878 aged 79'. This appeared in the Greenock Telegraph on 26/02/1878. I then found several more of his family members being born, getting married & dying in Moscow, here's two more -
'Ann Elizabeth, daughter of Mr & Mrs James Smith, grand-daughter of late John Smith,Greenock to William George Peet at Anglican Church of St Andrew, Moscow on 08.09.1899.(British date 20.09). (GreenockTelegraph 21.09.1899)'  and 'Richard Smith, formerly of Greenock, died at 3 Hills Gate, Moscow on 2nd February 1902 age
80. Obituary p2. 11.2.1902. (Greenock Telegraph7.2.1902)'
No wonder I couldn't find them on the UK census returns! If anyone gets a chance to have a look for the obituary especially (there should be more information in that) I would be very grateful please. Many thanks.

Surrey / The George & Dragon Kingston Hill
« on: Wednesday 28 March 12 19:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi, does anyone know if the former George & Dragon Inn at Kingston Hill is now known as the Kingston Lodge hotel please? I'm looking for an old image of the George & Dragon as a relative lived there during the 1930s. He was known as Jimmy Gold, one of 'The Crazy Gang', historical telephone directories show him there in 1935 and 36. I don't know if he actually kept or owned the Inn or just lodged there for a time.
Any help would be great, many thanks.

England / Thomas Collins foreign annuitant in 1851?
« on: Sunday 25 March 12 13:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone, I wasn't sure where to put this one, so sorry if this is the wrong board.
Thomas Collins born  c1795 in either Fulbeck or Wellingore Lincolnshire (within 5 miles of each other) appears on the 1851 census married to  Portugese lady by the name of Donna (meaning Mrs. or lady of the house) Ludovina Leocadia, at 6 Lambeth Square in London.
Thomas is listed as a 'foreign annuitant', I gather this means he was in reciept of an allowance of some sort. I'm wondering if he could have been in Portugal with the military & that's how he met his wife? They had three daughters & three sons that I know of, sometimes their birth places are given as Lisbon Portugal, other times at various locations around London. This is proving to be a wonderful family to research with some very interesting people, such as their daughter Carlotta married John Baptiste Zerbini, professor of music & well known violinist. One of Carlotta & John's daughter's who was named after her mother, became a well known actress in her time.
I would love to find out more about Thomas, was he in the military, where did the annuity come from etc.?
Any help or advice would be great, many thanks.

Occupation Interests / Jimmy Gold, The Crazy Gang!
« on: Sunday 18 March 12 01:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I've just found out that Jimmy Gold, a member of the very well known Crazy Gang, was the first cousin of my great grandmother. His birth name was James McGonigal, born on 21st April 1886 at 62 Clyde St. Glasgow, the son of John & Elizabeth, formerly Gould/Gold (variable spellings.)
I've found plenty of theatrical information which is just fascinating,  even some of their films on Youtube, amazing!
I don't think my mum or grandmother could have known about this connection or they would certainly have mentioned it.
I would really like to find a marriage for Jimmy, one of the articles online says that his wife's name was May, that's all though sadly. I've looked on all of the usual sites including Scotlands People, as I'm not sure when he came to London from Glasgow, most likely about 1908 I think, however he could have married in Scotland & brought his wife with him, I don't know. Jimmy died in the Brent district of London on 7th October 1967.
Any help or advise would be very welcome please, thanks in advance.

Lincolnshire / George Bass surgeon & explorer
« on: Tuesday 14 February 12 17:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I've been trying to find out if George Bass had any siblings, without success so far sadly. I know he was born in 1771 in Aswarby, his parents were George and Sarah, formerly Newman, his father was a tenant farmer. I've been looking at the IGI for any possible siblings, it would be unusual if he was an only child in those days. My reason for asking is that I have a Susannah Bass in my family tree, she was the daughter of Stanton Bass & Susannah White, born in Gedney about 1800, I wondered if they might be connected, any help would be great, many thanks.

United States of America / Owen Amos, Margaret Rothmire & family, Parkerville, Kansas.
« on: Saturday 22 October 11 11:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi,  Owen Amos emigrated to Kansas from Lincolnshire England in 1870, he was born in Spalding in 1839, the son of Thomas & Mary, formerly Owen. Owen married German born Margaret Rothmire (daughter of John Joseph & Mary Ann, formerly Gramer) in 1876 in White City Kansas. Margaret had emigrated from Germany with her parents in 1868.
Owen & Margaret had ten children that I know of, George, Nellie, Minnie, Fred, Lottie (Charlotte), John, Charles, Mary Ann, William and Ralph. Owen was a farmer in Parkerville Morris County, his brother was my husband's great great grandfather.  Do these names mean anything to someone out there? It would be amazing to find some of the family still in Kansas, or anywhere else for that matter!Any information would be a great help, many thanks.

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / Frederick Triffitt - possible drowning?
« on: Wednesday 28 September 11 14:37 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I wondered if anyone has access to  Lincolnshire newspaper archives please? Frederick Triffitt was born in Sutton Bridge in 1874, the son of John Charles Triffitt (1839-1880) and Elizabeth, formerly Wabe. He was one of six children, all boys. A family member thinks that he died by drowning, I found his death in the September quarter of 1883 Holbeach district, meaning that he died at the age of only nine years. The family would really like to find out more, illness prevents a visit to the local library at the moment, so any help would be greatly appreciated, many thanks.
