The Common Room / Berkshire FHS journals
« on: Monday 16 March 20 14:09 GMT (UK)  »
I have several Berkshire FHS journals stretching back to 2014 that I need to get rid of and would like to go to a good home.

Does anyone know of any exchange schemes?

They would need to be collected from my address.

Thanks.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / John Hey
« on: Saturday 05 January 19 17:10 GMT (UK)  »
John Hey was born on 25 December 1825 in Keighley, West Riding of Yorkshire (as it was then).  He was baptised on 24 February 1826 at St Michael and All Angels, Haworth.

He was the son of Stephen and Susan Hey (formerly Shackleton) who are my 4x great grandparents.

His wife was Hannah (formerly Sugden, born c1820) and they had 11 children between c1841 and c1861.

By 1881 he is living in Colne, Lancashire.

I have him on the census from 1851 to 1881 then I lose him.

I haven't got his marriage certificate yet, this is something I need to chase up.

Lancashire / James Hartley
« on: Friday 04 January 19 16:21 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching James Hartley from Colne, Lancashire. He was a weaver.

He was born about 1821, was married twice and had several children from these marriages.

His first marriage was to Sarah Pickover on 10 October 1850 in Colne.

He married Elizabeth Higginson (a widow) on 11 October 1877 in the same place.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks.

United States of America / John Hoadley of Ohio
« on: Thursday 29 November 18 17:00 GMT (UK)  »
I have seen an image of John Hoadley's grave in Greenwood cemetery Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio, USA.  He died on 26 June 1878.  The grave of his daughter is next to him.

Anyway, it is so badly worn I cannot read what it says on the gravestone.  Could possibly help me?  Thanks.

PS I have been in touch with the website where I found the image and they could not help me with a transcription.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / John Hoadley
« on: Thursday 22 November 18 16:53 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching John Hoadley (1784-1878).  He was the brother of my direct ancestor William.

During my research I have been reading that he was married three times but I can only find reference to two.

On 15 July 1828 he married Sarah Spencer in Halifax, England.  She died in 1832 and was buried somewhere in Halifax.

John married Hannah Crowther (a widow at the time of the marriage, maiden name is Beach) on 6 December 1838 again in Halifax.

There is a reference to a marriage between Hannah Spivey and John in 1818 in the same place as the other marriages but I am unable to confirm if this is correct.

John and Sarah had two daughters; Sarah (1829-1916) and Elizabeth (1831-1901).  Both died in the US.

John and Hannah (Beach/Crowther) had one son and one daughter.

Ann was born in 1823 and died in 1912 in the US.  John was born in 1821 and died the following year in Halifax.  Hannah died in the same place in 1827.

I have a bit more information but I think this post is complicated as it is so I won't say any more unless someone is able to help me sort this puzzle out.

Thanks for reading.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Albion and Moses Hartley
« on: Thursday 01 November 18 16:44 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone could help me date these photographs please?

Albion was born in 1850 and died in 1934.

Moses Hartley was my 2x great grandfather and he was born in 1862 and died in 1916.

The photo of Moses Hartley was sent me to a while ago by a roots chat member who saw another thead I had about Moses.

I don't have any photos of Moses to go by so I don't know if it's him or his uncle Moses who was born in 1846.

Thanks.

Rutland / William Valentine Winterton
« on: Monday 01 October 18 15:55 BST (UK)  »
A man matching the name and age of my ancestor was convicted of riot and imprisoned for five months in 1836 in Rutland.

I have looked elsewhere to see if I can find any clue to his identity as I am not sure if he is mine.

Any suggestions please?

Thanks.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / David Gawthrop
« on: Thursday 28 June 18 15:46 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to help my friend find her ancestor David Gawthrop.

He was born c1766 in Wilsden, Bradford, West Riding of Yorkshire and married Elizabeth Thornton in 1787.

On the marriage licence she has it says he was 21 giving a birth year of 1766 but she has since found another document that says he was 27 in 1787 so that means he was born c1760.  This document also mentions his father but doesn't name him!

I have searched the NBI and found loads of people with this name and varients but nothing fits.  Also searched Find A Grave for local cemeteries/burial grounds but there is no David Gawthrop.

I'm sorry I don't have much information but I am trying to help my friend and I would appreciate some help from you all here, thanks.
