Derbyshire Lookup Requests / 1807 Marriage by Licence at Bradley
« on: Friday 19 May 23 19:28 BST (UK)  »
Evening all.
I am hoping that someone can tell me where I can find the marriage allegedly at Bradley 19/5/1807 of Sarah BADDER and John SIM/SIMM/SIMS and the Derbyshire Licences for that time.  Anc* has the parish online but the registers are in a dreadfully damaged state in places.
There are dozens of public trees showing the above date of this marriage, saying it was by licence but not one of them has any proof, apart from hints from Anc*.
I do like actual proof before I put anything on my tree, although I know that John did marry a Sarah who died in 1815 after childbirth.
I've looked at the PRs of the surrounding area but found nothing.
Any help would be welcome.  Thanks.

Surrey Lookup Requests / Seeking 1954 Obituary and burial place
« on: Thursday 27 February 20 11:38 GMT (UK)  »
Good Morning Surrey.

I am looking for any newspaper obituaries for the Rev. Edmund Arthur Algernon READ born 1863, died 16th May 1954 at 17 Overton Road, Sutton, Surrey.  He was very well known all over the area at various churches but was mainly based around Sutton and I feel sure there should be a written obit somewhere for a vicar. I have searched the usual websites and been unable to find anything.
I particularly would like to know where he is buried, having already checked with the churches that he was known to have been connected with, or alternatively if he was cremated.
Thank you for looking.

Derbyshire Resources & Offers / William Hill assault and death 1800, Tibshelf
« on: Wednesday 22 January 20 17:09 GMT (UK)  »
I found this entry in the Tibshelf PRs and have copied it word for word as the Vicar recorded it.  The burial was Dec 15th 1800.
William Hill Jnr, farmer.  He was returning from Alfreton Market on the 5th just about 7 o clock in the evening, was robbed and cruelly treated by two men very near to that town and died a few days later in consequence of the severe wounds he then received.  He lost about 13 shillings cash besides his watch.

Later in the PRs, the Vicar added this ...   Lacy Powell and .....Drummond  were the men who cruelly treated William Hill, farmer, as mentioned in the list of deaths for December 1800.  They were hanged at Derby in the August for being the murderers for said crime.  They confessed after conviction.  They were Irishmen.

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Baptisms in the 1600s at Bilsthorpe
« on: Thursday 16 January 20 17:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Chatters
I haven't been on here for ages.
Does anyone have access please to the baptisms at Bilsthorpe between 12 Nov 1658 and Aug 1673? Either PRs or BTs would be useful.   I've searched on every site I can think of and all I have seen are literally over a hundred guesses on various public trees for each of the people I'm seeking, all copied from one another with no sources or proof.  Not good!!
The dates I'm missing are specific because I have the Notts FHS CDs and Bilsthorpe baptisms between those dates are not transcribed.
I need : - Edward TETHER / TEATHER, allegedly baptised in 1663, the son of Thomas and Ann (nee Gaskin)
Elizabeth HATHER baptised 14 Jan 1664 Bilsthorpe according to Family Search, the daughter of John HATHER and Elizabeth.  I'd like to be sure that it is a fact before putting it on my tree.
Both of the above are my direct line.

Thanks for looking.

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / 1876 Marriage Look up
« on: Sunday 28 July 19 16:57 BST (UK)  »
Please - is anyone visiting the archives soon who could look up a marriage for me?

It was at Nottingham St Mary's 7th Oct 1876, William MASON and Charlotte ETCHES.   I would like to know William's father's name - hopefully Sylvester Mason.  If it's not Sylvester you'll have stopped me going up the wrong tree.

Thanks.  NC.

Derbyshire / Edensor Village, background info please
« on: Wednesday 03 July 19 16:32 BST (UK)  »
I had the pleasure of visiting Edensor church and surrounding area yesterday in search of gravestones for my direct line ancestors BOND who were there 200 years ago or more.  I know they are buried there but seemingly couldn't afford gravestones. I managed to find several more recent stones for people who I'm sure will turn out to be distant cousins.  The part of the churchyard which was fenced off for sheep but accessible if gates were carefully closed, was very uneven and difficult to walk on but we were surprised that many obviously very old graves were still not sunk level.  Is this because of rock underneath as it seemed very odd.
I also hoped that someone would know the origin of the unusual name of the road around the Church - Jap Lane.
My ancestors gave their address in the censuses as Edensor, but several worked in The Big House as either servants or gardeners.  I can now appreciate the distance they had to walk every day in all weathers.
Thanks.  NC.

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Fulke FLINTHAM marriage 1600s.
« on: Tuesday 02 April 19 15:29 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find the two marriages for my 11 x great grandad Fulke (several spellings) FLINTHAM.  His birth is recorded in Ossington in 1604 in Chancery records.  His first wife was Katharine and they had ten children starting in 1629 all baptised in Pleasley.  I cannot find their marriage anywhere in Notts or Derbyshire and my thinking is that maybe Katharine was Notts born so married there.  She died in Pleasley in 1651 and Fulke then "married" Anna or Hannah and had another load of children which I am still finding.
So my first request is for number one marriage anywhere in Notts.
Some public trees have Fulke's second marriage to Ann GEE at Norton Cuckney 7 Dec 1647, I have checked this on the marriages CD and a research site which both say "Tho FLINTON" as the groom.  Is anyone able to check this entry at the archives please, to see if it is actually Tho and not a badly written Fulke?
This family links back to my birth surname so I would love to solve the problem.
Thank you.

Hello all.  John Bond is my direct line and I have been given conflicting information by people about John's baptism and parents that cannot be backed up by proof.  Although there are some excellent PRs on line, they don't seem to go back far enough.
I have been told 1613 and 1621, either Darley, North Wingfield or Bakewell.   His marriage to Dorothy Knowles took place in Bakewell which I know about.

I also have a query about Dorothy's parents.  Thomas KNOWLES and Margaret GREENE married at Darley 30 Nov 1612.  I have been told Thomas's baptism was in 1577 and Margaret's in 1585 , both without any indication of their parents or confirmation of the place.
It's all a bit woolly for my liking and I would very much appreciate some help please in confirming the correct dates and places.

Thanks for reading this.

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Ann BRIGHTMORE - 1777 two marriages in Bakewell
« on: Sunday 31 December 17 18:32 GMT (UK)  »
Happy New Year Derbyshire.

I'm a bit stuck with Ann BRIGHTMORE, my 5 x gt gran.  I know a lady of that name married Samuel BOND 14 Jul 1777 at Bakewell after Banns, both said to be from Rowland. Genuki told me that Rowland has never had a church of it's own.  I have taken this lady's baptism to be the one at Baslow 17 Oct 1756, dau of Michael and Ann Brightmore.  There is another Ann Brightmore baptised at Baslow 5 Aug 1755 to James and Elizabeth, but she was buried there in 1756.
So far so good.  Now I find that an Ann BRIGHTMORE married Richard NOTON at Bakewell 27 Nov 1777, both single and said to be from Baslow.  Public trees which appear to be copied from one another have Ann the daughter of Michael marrying Richard NOTON.
I think I'm right but wonder if anyone can help please, either finding another spare Ann, or proving which one married my Samuel BOND.

Thanks for looking.  NC.
