Technical Help / Can I copy a picture from a smart-phone direct to a memory-stick?
« on: Thursday 26 July 18 16:56 BST (UK)  »
I'm able to download photos from OH's Smartphone to the laptop, then transfer them to whatever device I wish e.g. a memory-stick.

Can I cut out the laptop and do this directly?

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Free software to remove a stain
« on: Wednesday 13 June 18 17:19 BST (UK)  »
The bride dropped a piece of food, which stained her dress (of course before most of the photos!)
And the stain shows on many many of the photos!

People on this board have previously recommended Free Software to trick around with photos.

The bride is technically savvy, but hasn't done any photo-editing before, wants to remove the small stain from the photos herself, and doesn't intend to do any other editing ever (hence looking for something free)

I'm attaching a clip of the stained part of the dress ..

Technical Help / New Yahoo Mail -how to get rid of it! ****COMPLETED *********
« on: Sunday 01 April 18 11:07 BST (UK)  »
The new version of Yahoo mail is driving me round-the -bend! . . mainly in composing emails - it "knows" that I want double spacing etc etc. I loathe it!
I'm reduced to doing everything in Word first, and copying/pasting . . even then it messes things up a bit.

I think I must have inadvertently clicked on something, having successfully avoided it for months.

How can I get my old email back?

-I eventually found the "settings" button hiding with the adverts on the extreme right of the toolbar.
-I clicked on it and got a menu, which included "switch back to classic mail"
-I clicked on that and got a pop-up window which allowed me -
 . . . 1) to say why I wanted to revert .. I told them!
. . . 2) to click on "switch back to classic mail" I clicked on this

no change! the button in red above didn't seem to be clickable.

has anyone any bright ideas?

Kent / "World End Lane", Orpington Area ?? 1939 **COMPLETED **
« on: Sunday 06 November 16 21:38 GMT (UK)  »
Like many of us, I've been trawling through the 1939 Register.

My Morleys turned up in the Orpington area, as expected, and I tried to figure out their address, one letter at a time.
The street came up as "World End Lane" . . just wondering where it might be in the area - is it still there? (possibly not - google Maps didn't seem to know.)

The Common Room / Probate search online 1952 ** COMPLETED **
« on: Thursday 27 October 16 18:20 BST (UK)  »
I've been looking for O'HARA Wills at

1951 and 1953 are fine, but 1952 sends me to FORSDYKE
(and LAW, MARSDEN and NEWMAN send me to FORSDYKE also)
ADAMS and ROE are fine!

Am I losing it? or is there a bug?

Laois (Queens) / Donaghmore PLU . . **COMPLETED**
« on: Monday 10 October 16 20:40 BST (UK)  »
Did DONAGHMORE PLU change its name?

I've just been looking for births in Queens County 1888-1900.
All my books say that the PLUs are
 - Abbeyleix
 - Athy
 - Donaghmore
 - Mountmellick
 - (and a small bit of Roscrea and Carlow)

I can find no births at all for any Patrick or Mary in Donaghmore PLU from about 1886 onwards on either or
(I'm not looking for these names - just chose them as the most common!)

Technical Help / Dropbox - renaming folders
« on: Thursday 18 August 16 11:53 BST (UK)  »
I use Dropbox to send photos. I'd like to rename some of the folders - can I do this?

When Dropbox installed, it didn't work precisely as expected - there doesn't seem to be a "dropbox" folder on my computer, so I have to drag the photos from my computer to a dropbox window open on the web.

I'm moderately techie, but not extremely so - hope I've explained myself sufficiently.

The Common Room / ** POSTEMS on FreeBMD **
« on: Friday 12 February 16 23:41 GMT (UK)  »
I spent a small fortune recently on five Certs from the GRO.
I've just finished entering postems for these into the FreeBMD site .

Just think, if we all entered the details of all our Certs, there'd be a huge volume of extra information available.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Name on headstone
« on: Wednesday 07 October 15 20:01 BST (UK)  »
I'm recording a graveyard in Co Wicklow at present. This inscription is giving me a problem, though the photograph i took is reasonably clear . .
I've posted a 150KB version, but the original is ~2.3MB

I can't read the person's name - I have all the rest of the inscription, but the name is in a different script - I can hazard a guess at the Christian name, but those whirly capital letters . .? ?
