Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Electoral Roll for Box 1910 - Alfred M DUVAL
« on: Thursday 25 March 21 13:56 GMT (UK)  »
If anyone has access to the register of electors for the village of Box I'd be very grateful for a lookup for Alfred Merle DUVAL.
His daughter was born on 13th Aug 1910 and baptised in the Box parish church on 2nd Oct 1910. Alfred was recorded as a manservant on the baptismal record.
In 1901 he was in Tonbridge, Kent and in 1911 he was again in Tonbridge where he's recorded as married but there is no record of a marriage that I can find.
I'd be very interested to discover where he was living between those dates.

World War Two / Handmade POW tin identification
« on: Thursday 28 May 20 12:12 BST (UK)  »
I've come across a tin, dated 1944, that was possibly made in a POW camp.  Can anyone help with confirming this (or otherwise) and maybe identify the camp and even the name of the person who made it? Or point me in the direction of other places to research.

Hertfordshire / DOERY in Bushey
« on: Wednesday 22 January 20 15:33 GMT (UK)  »
I'm hoping someone can help me unravel the DOERY family!

I have George DOERY (age 41 b. London)  at the Bell Inn, Bushey in 1851, also his wife Elizabeth (age 41 b. Stockland, Dorset), and daughter Elizabeth (age 1 b.London). This therefore seems to indicate that they moved from London to Bushey between 1850 and 1851? He was at The Bell Inn for many years, last record being the 1871 census.

I've found a marriage between George DOERY and Elizabeth PYNE (or PAYNE) at St George the Martyr, Southwark in 12/11/1848, both ages are given as 39 and both otp. George's occupation is Fruiterer.

I haven't been able to find George in the 1841 census.

I think George's baptism was possibly 8 Sept 1809 at St James Westminster, birth being 12 Aug 1809, parents William and Jane.

Now, there was another DOERY family in Bushey:
1851 William (age 50 b. Middlesex, London) occupation Omnibus Proprietor, wife Elizabeth (age 48 b. Middlesex, Edgeware), son William (age 15 b. Middlesex, Stanmore), daughter Jane (age 11 b. Middlesex, Stanmore)
1861 they are at Harts Farm, Little Bushey Lane, William being a widower
1871 still at Harts Farm
Looks like  William junior took on the farm, he's there in 1891

Be grateful for any help linking the 2 Doery families - it seems too much of a coincidence that they are both in Bushey around the same time, having apparently moved from London.

Warwickshire / ILIFFE in Hillmorton and Coventry
« on: Saturday 06 April 19 13:30 BST (UK)  »
Trying to find out if there's a link between two lots of Iliffes!

I have Coventry Iliffes and Hillmorton Iliffes, not been able to trace the Coventry lot further back than:
William ILIFFE b. ? m. Elizabeth LANGTON at Holy Trinity, Coventry 1808

What I'd like to discover is whether they actually came from Hillmorton, or one of the Hillmorton Iliffes moved to Coventry before 1808.

I've traced my Hillmorton Iliffe family back to:
William ILIFFE b. 1736 m. Sarah SMITH at Hillmorton 1758

One of their grandsons, another William (!) was married in Coventry:
William ILIFFE b. 1812 at Hillmorton m. Elizabeth COLLIS 1843 at Coventry.

Can't help feeling there ought to be a connection between the two families, given that Hillmorton and Coventry are only about 15 miles apart.

The reason for my interest is that, my mother's father, Harry Iliffe Mander, was the son of Henry Mander and Sarah Iliffe - and her mother, Mabel Betts, was the daughter of George Betts and Elizabeth Collis Iliffe...

Somerset / Taunton School 1925 - 1926
« on: Friday 22 March 19 16:11 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to locate copies of the Taunton School photos of staff and pupils from 1925 and/or 1926, can anyone help? My father and uncle were pupils there.

The school have sent me the 1927 photo but unfortunately they don't have the 1925 or 1926 ones.

Thanks!

Kent / Sentenced to 3 months hard labour - 1870
« on: Sunday 24 December 17 10:21 GMT (UK)  »
Just discovered that my wife's g grandmother, Agnes Budd, was sentenced, at the age of 17, to 3 months hard labour for stealing a wedding ring.

According to newspaper reports she was charged at Tonbridge Petty Sessions in January 1870 and committed for trial with no bail allowed. She was subsequently tried at the Kent Quarter Sessions in Maidstone on 3rd March, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 3 months hard labour.

I'd love to find out where she would have been held while awaiting trial, and where the sentence would have been carried out. Anyone have access to the Quarter Sessions records and/or gaol records?

Derbyshire / Horsley Woodhouse death in 1938
« on: Thursday 16 November 17 16:31 GMT (UK)  »
My G grandmother, Emily G Clarke, died on 15th Jan 1938 at Horsley Woodhouse, the address given is Willow Grove, which I haven't been able to find.

However what I'd really like to find is her burial. The death notice in the Ripley and Heanor News doesn't give any details, I don't think St Susanna's has a churchyard, and she is not buried in Belper Cemetery, what are the other possibilities locally?

The Common Room / Help deciphering crest/monogram
« on: Saturday 28 October 17 16:39 BST (UK)  »
The attached is engraved on a silver quaich, dated London 1905 - anyone know what it's meaning is?

I have assumed that is probably meant to represent the initial of a child and the quaich would have been a christening gift, but what initial is it? My best guess is 'A' but I wonder if the styling has any significance? A little research indicates that the use of a crescent indicates a second son.

Or am I barking up completely the wrong tree?
