Occupation Interests / Marie Dagmar - actress
« on: Sunday 03 July 22 14:11 BST (UK)  »
My interest is Victorian/Edwardian Theatre and I am researching Marie Dagmar, her stage name

She died on 15 June 1925 at Rochester Grove in Fleet under her then married name of Mary Somerfield and I am trying and failing to find out where she was buried or cremated, so any help here would be much appreciated.

Born Ellen Silver on 5 December 1863 in Hampshire, using the name Mary Silver, she married Dorset W Lawrance on 24 April 1886 in London.  He was an actor who went by the stage name of Lawrance D'Orsay.  They divorced in 1907.

That same year she married another actor called Frederick Charles Somerfield in St Helens using the name Mary Amelia Dagmar!  Fred died in 1910.

Any information about her burial would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Occupation Interests / Edwardina/Victorian Theatre
« on: Saturday 13 November 21 14:16 GMT (UK)  »
My interest is in Edwardian/Victorian provincial theatre artists.

I am researching Harry Harrop and Ethel Vinroy, the stage names of two artistes who married between 1900 and 1910.  Unfortunately, I am struggling to establish their real names.

The only clue I have found is that in The Stage newspaper, Ethel posted a notice to say that her father, Alfred Davis, (late Somerset House, London) died on 12 March 1916 in his 89th year.

I cannot, however, find a death for Alfred Davis in that period of the correct age.

Any help anybody can give me would be much appreciated.

The Common Room / Twins birth certificates with no names entered
« on: Friday 02 July 21 13:11 BST (UK)  »
Twins I am researching in 1865 each have a birth certificate showing their time of birth, but no names.

They were both baptised three months later when of course they both had names given.

My question is this: would their parents have to have applied for there to be some sort of amendment to be made to the birth certificates at a later date or is some other means used to prove their names.

Thanks in advance for any help

Occupation Interests / Amy Ellam Actress
« on: Thursday 01 July 21 14:57 BST (UK)  »
My interest is Victorian/Edwardian Theatre and I am researching Amy Ellam who performed between c. 1885 and 1920.

Her real name was Maria Amy Elizabeth Dempster and she married a fellow actor, Lancelot Usher in 1896 who died in 1916.

I wonder if anybody might have a photo of Maria/Amy as I have searched in vain.

Thanks in advance for any help.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / May Mussett Assistance sought please
« on: Monday 14 June 21 18:16 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anybody can help with my quest please.

May Mussett was born in Ash, Surrey on 8 November 1879 to Alfred Mussett and Mary Anne Dooley.

In the 1901 census she was living with her mother in Paddington

I cannot find her at all in the 1911 census and would welcome some ideas.

Between 1918 and 1928 she lived at 32 Compton Crescent in Chiswick and then seems to have fallen off the radar altogether. I cannot find and marriage of death records for her after 1928.  So any information here would be welcome.

Thanks

Armed Forces Resources / Army Pension 1878
« on: Thursday 08 April 21 10:17 BST (UK)  »
The person I am researching left the Army in 1878 after 22 years service and was awarded a pension.

The record shows the Board's decision and the amount columns are headed S (shillings) and D (pence)

The strange thing is that the shillings column for him is empty but the pence column shows 25 which in old money would be two shillings and one penny.

Can anybody help me with an explanation please as to how much he was awarded.

Thanks

Occupation Interests / Theatre actor and theatre company manager STANLEY CARLTON
« on: Friday 15 January 21 17:57 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anybody could help me with this search as I am trying to find out what I can about this man.

Stanley Carlton was a reasonably well known actor and theatre company manager in the late 1890s and well into the 1900s and in the 1930s he became the manager of the Cinema de Lux in Brighton.  He also lived in the Twickenham area about 1918/20.

The problem is that I don't know whether Stanley Carlton was his real name as opposed to a stage name.  On the 1911 census he is shown under this name as a married theatrical manager, lodging in Leicestershire with a birth date of 1882 and birthplace Redcar, Yorkshire.

In 1929, he placed a notice in the stage to say that his wife had died on 14 April 1927.  Now that notice, I believe refers to Rachel Maud Lawson, born Rachel Mussett in 1868 who did die on that date.  She was an actress who went under the stage name of Rubie Maude and she did live with Stanley for a while, although they were never married.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks
