Glamorganshire Completed Lookups / James Lewis James
« on: Sunday 10 October 10 21:39 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to track down more information about my Gtx2 Gran's brother James Lewis James, born Merthyr Tydfil 1860 - married Mary Ann Thomas 15th September 1883.

Known children Lewis (b1885 Maesteg), David Benjamin (b1888 Merthyr Tydfil), Margaretta (b1890 Rhymney - later md Albert Maynard Boobyer), William John (b1894 Merthyr), Sarah Ann (b1896 Merthyr) & Daniel Thomas (b1898 Merthyr).

The 1911 census had James & family recorded as living at 61 High Street, Senghenydd - all males listed as miner (except Daniel).

I am trying to find out where families in Senghenydd were buried? I do not have a death date for James but found reference to James L James deaths in 1920 & 1921 that could be him. If I can find out when he died then I hope to search for an obituary in the local paper for further details.

If anyone can find James James death c1920 on some sort of burial register?  If anyone could check that for me I would be very grateful.

To summarise

1. Where would families be buried in Senghenydd - what was the name of the cemetery?
2. Could someone check for the burial record there please?
3. Does anyone know the name of the local paper for that area?

Many thanks  :)

My grandmother Blodwen Evans (b1905 in Merthyr Tydfil) was the daughter of Lewis Evans (b1872 Vaynor, Breconshire) and Charlotte (nee Davies b 1875 Merthyr Tydfil).

Siblings of my Nan were Margaret b1897, William b1898 & Tydfil b1907 - all b Merthyr Tydfil.

I have tried all sorts of combinations of searches on the 1911 site and cannot locate them anywhere! I found my Nan's other sister Elizabeth (b1899) staying with her grandmother but there appears to be no trace of Blodwen and her parents & siblings!

I've spent a small fortune trying to locate them without any luck at all. It seems obvious to me that my family's surname has been transcribed incorrectly (!?!) & what is especially frustrating with the 1911 site is that you cannot do a search on just a christian name  - you have to enter some form of surname  >:(

I've emailed the 1911 site about this frustration and just received a "thank you for your amendment" automatic response with no suggestion as to how I can resolve the issue.

If anyone stumbles across any family resembling any of the details above whilst looking through the 1911 census - please let me know. Also, if anyone has managed to get any response from the 1911 site re this issue about being able to search on just a christian name - please get in touch.  :-X

Monaghan / Coogan/Cooghan Family Castleblaney
« on: Thursday 21 May 09 13:36 BST (UK)  »
Is there anyone over in Co Monaghan (or local to the archives in Dublin) who would be able to check the following query for me?

My Gtx4 Grandmother was born between 1794 & 1800 at Castleblaney, Co. Monaghan, Ireland. Unfortunately her age fluctuates wildly on the census but her death certificate gives an age at death as 75 in 1869 - giving an approx. birth year of 1794.

Her name was Catherine COGHAN (also seen spelled as COOGHAN, COOGAN & COGAN - she also used COOK as a surname!!).

She may also have had a brother called Patrick COOGAN who was born in Castleblaney c1798 - possibly Mucknoe. He died in New York, USA c1848.

I believe there are several transcriptions of the local graveyard/memorials & I wondered if there was any mention contained in these transcripts of a COOGAN (or variations therof) that may help me trace her parents or any other siblings/relatives?

FYI - from what we can gather, Catherine Coogan must have moved to England c1820 (London/Greenwich or Southampton/Portsmouth area) but I suspect she may have had other siblings that also moved to Scotland (Glasgow) or emigrated to the USA, Canada & possibly Australasia.

Any suggestions as to how I may be able to research back further would also be welcomed.  :-[

If anyone can help with the above query, it would be very much appreciated.  :)

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Greenwich Heritage Centre
« on: Wednesday 25 March 09 21:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there - is anyone due to visit the Greenwich Heritage Centre in the near future?

If SKS is and if they are willing, I wonder if they could help with the following.

I'm looking for baptism/christening records for a Dinah (maybe Diana or even plain Ann) BIDDLE born Greenwich c1829. I do know she had a sister Elizabeth BIDDLE that was born c1825 also in Greenwich - father's name given as William Biddle, Fisherman by trade on their marriage certs.

Info re any other siblings or a parental marriage would also be appreciated if you have the time.

If there's anything I can do to help you in return just shout!

Worcestershire Lookup Requests / Does anyone live near Hartlebury, St James?
« on: Saturday 21 February 09 22:07 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone live in or near Hartlebury, St James?

I have located burials for a

Rev John Waldron 30th June 1794 &
Thomas Waldron 18th November 1825

both buried at Hartlebury, St James.

If anyone lives locally and has the time, is there any chance they could check to see if the gravestones or records at the church still exist.

I am particularly interested in finding out if they are buried with anyone else and if their memorial or burial records give any other information

If any one can help it would be much appreciated  :)

Lanarkshire / Katie Gunter b1881
« on: Thursday 13 December 07 11:32 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help or advise please?

I am trying to track what happened to one of my relatives Catherine (aka Katie) Gunter. Katie was born in Cwmbach, Glamorgan, South Wales in 1881. In 1891 she is living with her father & siblings. I can find no trace of her in 1901.

I have searched the death and marriage records but can find no matches.

However, my Great Aunt (still alive) recalls that before she was born (1925), her parents and elder siblings moved to live with her "Aunty Katie & family" in Glasgow for a number of years (c1914-17).

My query is this - if this "Aunty Katie" is my Katie born in 1881 then she must have moved to the Glasgow area and possibly married locally - maybe before the 1901 census??

Is there a Scottish equivalent of the BMD records where I can search for a possible marriage or even birth of children with mother's maiden name Gunter for the Glasgow/Lanarkshire area??

Any help or advice appreciated
Many thanks  :)

I am trying to locate a baptism record for an Edward William Elliott born Newington c1793-5 ish, ideally with names of parents.

Edward was a Greengrocer/Ironmonger/General Goods Supplier (aka Hawker) who lived at Ellis Square, Newington. He died 2nd Nov 1851 at 14 Trinity Square - age given on death certificate as 57 - age given on 1841 census = 40 - on 1851 census as 56 - so birth year c 1793-5?

FYI - he married Ann Alice Clarke on the 24th of August 1818 at St Martin In The Fields, Covent Garden, London.

His first 2 children were christened at St Marys, Lambeth & the next 6 at St Marys Newington.

1841 census says born in the county of Surrey - 1851 census says birthplace "NK" but I strongly suspect he was born in Newington.

If anyone has the time whilst at the archives, could you check to see if there is a baptism registered for St Marys please?

I have checked IGI but the records for St Marys don't start until 1812.

Many thanks in advance if SKS can help  :)

Worcestershire Lookup Requests / Waldron Burials Look Up Please
« on: Sunday 21 October 07 14:56 BST (UK)  »
If anyone out there is due to visit the archives at Worcester, could I beg a favour please.

I am looking for the burial of a John Waldron (born c1728 at Belbroughton) who it is believed died after 1776. He was left an annuity in that year and mentioned in a legal documentation, referred to as

"Rev. John Waldron, rector of Hampton Lovett"

His wife was named Mary - probably nee Holden and I would assume she was buried with him.

John & Mary had a son called George who also entered the church and was based at Elmley Lovett c 1800.

So in essence, I am looking for a burial of a Rev John Waldron and his wife Mary - John being buried after 1776 in either Hampton Lovett or Elmley Lovett.

If anyone has the time to check for me when they next visit the archives it would be very much appreciated.  :)

Dublin / McDermott Assistance
« on: Saturday 20 October 07 11:58 BST (UK)  »
I have been hammering at a brick wall now for the last few years and need some advice, help or guidance if at all possible.

My Gtx2 Grandmother, Ann (Annie) Biddle was born 30 Oct 1866 at 7, Upper Beckwith St, Birkenhead.

Her birth certificate gives her mother's name as DINAH Biddle nee McDermott but on the 1871 census, her mother's name is given as MARIA Biddle - b Dublin, Ireland. So Annie's mother could be a Dinah or a Maria or even a Mary!

Dinah/Maria Biddle states that Annie's father is JOHN Biddle (Sugar Refinery Lab) and that she is a widow by 1871. In 1885, Annie Biddle records on her marriage certificate that her father is MICHAEL Biddle (deceased) – Photographer.

I have trawled through all the BMDs and can find no marriage for a Mary or Maria or Dinah McDermott for any variation of the name Biddle. Now, call me suspicious, but I strongly suspect that Annie was illegitimate. Her father could possibly be "Mr" Biddle but the chances of finding him are slim and few between.

Turning back to Dinah/Maria - we know her maiden name was McDermott and that she was born in Dublin (via 1871 census) c1840.

I do not know when she arrived in Birkenhead, but the 1871 census shows that she also had a son called Olive (?) – possibly Oliver or Clive Biddle born c1859/60 – she claims – in Birkenhead.

I have looked until I am blue in the face but cannot find Dinah/Maria with her son on the 1861 census and there is no trace of this birth in the BMD registers.

Is there anyone out there who is able to visit the archives in Dublin to see if there is any record of:

A birth of a Clive or Oliver McDermott or Biddle c1859/60?
A marriage of a Dinah/Maria or Mary McDermott to a “Mr” Biddle late 1850’s?

Via the DublinHeritage site, I have identified the following, possible, baptisms for a Mary McDermott (no Maria or Dinah baptisms listed):

I have searched the 1851 and 1861 census in England just in case the “family” came over from Dublin but no joy.

Where do I/can I go from here? Any ideas or suggestions?

The only other thing I can think of is trying to find other children for the parents mentioned above to see if that would hold any clues. However, everywhere I seem to turn ends up with the prospect of hiring an Irish researcher and their costs are quite frankly way beyond my means.

Thank you for reading this & thank you in advance to anyone who can offer any suggestions or help.

Apologies for the long message.
