World War One / George Cooke Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders
« on: Friday 28 August 20 10:43 BST (UK)  »
Lcpl George Cooke 500 Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders b.1891 discharged to pension 28 Mar 1919 whilst living Wishaw, Glasgow.  I have the pension record ledger entry which also mentions 6747 Sco. Rifles but that’s all I can find, nothing prior to this date for certain or anything else regarding his time in the military.  I’m assuming he spent some time abroad as malaria is mentioned?  Any help appreciated thanks!

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Gammon in Petersfield
« on: Thursday 03 August 17 05:41 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for a baptism of Fanny/Frances Gammon bc1796 Petersfield.  She married James Hall in Buriton 1817 and one of the witnesses (from a transcript) was Caroline Gammon.  Fanny may well have been the daughter of William Gaman/Gamman/Gammon and Sarah Stacey who married Froxfield but I can't be sure.   Thankyou.

World War One / Knit and Crochet Poppies for WW1 Remembrance Project
« on: Tuesday 23 July 13 17:31 BST (UK)  »
Last year over 75 people worldwide knitted and crocheted poppies to adorn the "Road of Remembrance" in Folkestone, Kent for Remembrance Sunday.  The project was co-ordinated by Purl Queens who would very much like to have even more donated poppies this year thus be delighted to accept either knitted or crocheted poppies from all over the world.

Personally, I think this is a wonderful project and am sure there must be other Rootschatters who would very much like to make a poppy or two in remembrance of their families involved in the great war.   If you can't knit or crochet then perhaps there's a mum, granny, aunt, neighbour, friend or work colleague who could spare a little time to make one on your behalf.

All knitted or crocheted poppies should be sent to "Purl Queens, 104a Sandgate High Street, Sandgate, Folkestone, Kent, England CT20 3BY"

Photographs of last years installation https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.421888494543976.96587.130976250301870&type=3 c/o Purl Queens main facebook page https://www.facebook.com/purlqueens

Perhaps we could list here any suitable knitting and crochet patterns that we find and, a lovely suggestion from Sarah, photos of our finished poppies before we send them off :)

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / St Martin in the Fields Marriages
« on: Tuesday 01 January 13 12:06 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for details of some marriages at St Martin in the Fields:

Charles CARTER 5 Jun 1848
Mary WHYTE 26 Sep 1847

According to Findmypast the marriages of St Martin in the Fields are included in their online parish register collection but neither of these are coming up in a search?  Is their index not complete for the given parishes/dates does anybody know?  Many thanks

Sorry I've not been around much for the past month or so but I have been furiously stitching for a charity event at the end of the month with little time to answer messages etc..  I hope to catch up next month.

Kent / For ancestors buried in Greenwich
« on: Friday 14 September 12 15:59 BST (UK)  »
Burial and Cremation records for the (now) London Borough of Greenwich have been added to Deceased Online.  Some of Greenwich and Eltham have been added with further records for Greenwich, Charlton, Plumstead and Woolwich will be added soon.

It is a pay per view site but the index is free so at least you can see if they were likely to have been buried there
