Australia / Boroondara Cemetery record query.
« on: Monday 14 February 22 08:12 GMT (UK)  »
Please could someone offer an explanation on the term 'placement" in relation to a record I've found for a family grave.

I am looking at records of four extended family members buried at Boroondara General Cemetery, the burial date of two of them is recorded as burial and the burial dates fit with their dates of death. The other two are recorded as placement, one died in April 1959 and the burial record says placement 6 April 1961, the other died December 1983 and placement 26 Jan 1984.

The only explanation I have come up with is placement means ashes placed in the grave. Am I on the right track and is there a way of confirming this if I am.

Many thanks.

The Common Room / Goble Marriage 1854 or 1855?
« on: Friday 12 February 16 09:53 GMT (UK)  »
I'm pondering on two marriages records for George Edward Goble and would like some help deciding which of the two is more likely relevant to my research. (Or are both of them  ???)

From the both the 1861 & 1871 census I know the spouse of George Edward Goble (b. about 1830 Rolvenden, Kent) was Eliza (born about 1828 Willingale, Essex). They are enumerated as residing at Finchley and Finchley Park, Middlesex.

I appear to have a choice of two marriage records ................ June 1854 St Pancras, 1b 80 and 1855 Chelmsford, Essex 4a 131. There is another record for a marriage of George Edward Goble in 1854 with two other prospective spouses which I have discounted as neither have the forename of Eliza.

Any thoughts would greatly appreciated

The Common Room / Briggs/Pearson challenge, help needed please.
« on: Tuesday 09 June 15 07:41 BST (UK)  »

Amelia Pearson married William Briggs in Nottinghamshire in 1838. I have the birth certificate of their daughter Sarah Ann born 1840, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, William and daughter Sarah appear in the 1841 census in Mansfield. Amelia is not with them and I cannot find death record for Amelia or a likely candidate for in the 1841 census.

William Briggs seems to disappear after 1841 and daughter Sarah is with her fathers mother (another Sarah) and his sisters in Traffic Street Derby in both the 1851 & 1861 census.

The only reference after to 1841 for William is a notice in the Derby Mercury - Suddenly in London on 28th February, Mr William Briggs of Traffic Street Derby in the 47th year of his age. If this is the William I'm looking where is he in 1851 and 1861 and what became of wife Amelia?

I believe it's likely William was born in Yorkshire about 1815, the son of William and Sarah Briggs,  His occupation in 1841 was Coach Maker and is again given as Coach Maker on daughter Sarah Anne's 1863 marriage certificate. Sarah married in Hull, Yorkshire.

Thanks for reading and if you can help, suggest or advise me I'd be a very happy Maggiemae.  :)

Tipperary / Federeth
« on: Monday 23 March 15 07:29 GMT (UK)  »
Could someone help me out with a place name.

I'm transcribing the image of a 1872 Army Record. Part of the final description of Michael Sherlock is of being born in the Parish of Federth, near the Town of Federth in the County of Tipperary.

GENUKI which is usually my best friend is failing to help me out. Google hasn't come up with a place of that name either. I coming to the conclusion Federth may be Fethard.

Any thoughts on this please.

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / 1841 Census missing Jones Family
« on: Wednesday 24 October 12 07:06 BST (UK)  »
I'm out of ideas for locating a Jones family in the 1841 census and calling for help in finding them, please don't all groan at once  ::).

Thomas Jones was born West Kirby, Cheshire abt. 1807 and his spouse Lydia Rowland was born and baptised in West Kirby, Cheshire in 1801. They married in West Kirby in 1829, their children were ......

William 1830
Sarah 1831
Elizabeth 1833
Thomas 1838
Ann 1840
John 1842

All the children were born and baptised in West Kirby and the family are in West Kirby in both the 1851 and 1861 census. I have tried all my usual tricks for finding a lost family but this Jones lot have completely eluded me in the 1841 census.

Any help to find this Jones family would very much appreciated.

The Common Room / Naming of illegitimate children
« on: Thursday 05 July 12 09:02 BST (UK)  »
I have several records where single mothers appear to have named their illegitimate child after her mother, father or the father of the child.

Has anyone else found a pattern for the naming illegitimate children?

I have baptism record for an illegitmate child 1830, the mother is described as a single woman and there no mention of the father. The child was named John, the woman's father was William and she married a man called Matthew so I am wondering if perhaps the name John could the name of the child's father's.

This child was buried in 1832 with Matthew's surname.
