Lincolnshire / Born in Lincoln Castle prison?
« on: Monday 11 March 13 17:19 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know where I should look for records of babies born in Lincoln Castle prison, please?

I'm looking into the case of murderess Elizabeth Warriner who was hanged there in 1821 for poisoning her stepson. Contemporary newspaper reports have her with "a suckling child" at the time of her execution, and sure enough on the 1841 census there is a girl (Charlotte), born around 1821, living in the household of her widowed husband. The assumption is therefore that Charlotte was the suckling child, and must therefore have been born while Elizabeth was at the prison, but I'd like to find a birth record to be sure.

The Common Room / Tracing forwards, not backwards - Reginald Brimicombe
« on: Friday 31 August 12 20:34 BST (UK)  »
My great-great-grandfather's will came in the post today from the courts service, and in it there is mention of his war medals and army commission/discharge being given to his grandson, Reginald Albert Brimicombe.

I'd like to see if those items are still in the family anywhere, but my family didn't even know they were connected to a family of Brimicombes, let alone have any contact with them, so I'm trying to trace Reginald and his descendents forwards, rather than backwards. I realise that this will take me into the territory of living people, eventually, and I would like to state now that I don't expect anyone to break any forum rules in that regard. What I am interested in is some help with finding Reginald, because I can't find anything of him at all after his birth!

Here is the information I have:

William Albert BRIMICOMBE (1887-1915) mar. Ellen May BARTHORPE (1886-1969) 1911 at Gainsborough, Lincs.
Had issue:   1) Reginald Albert BRIMICOMBE (registered as Albert Reginald BRIMICOMBE) b. Jul/Aug/Sep 1913

And that is as far as I can get ???

William Albert had a younger sister, who married twice. If I can't get anywhere with tracing Reg, I wonder if it would be worth tracing her descendants to see if they know anything about William Albert's family that hasn't been passed down through my family.

The Common Room / Alice Innocent - but was she?!
« on: Wednesday 22 August 12 19:51 BST (UK)  »
I've been trying to find a birth that has eluded me for some time - the birth of Alice Innocent, who married John Warriner at Tuxford, Notts on 01 Jun 1676, and in doing so I've just noticed something that I could kick myself for not noticing before - that the first child of John and Alice (Ann) was baptised in March 1676; 3 months before they got married (not quite so innocent after all, then!)

This isn't extraordinary in itself I suppose, and it doesn't help me locate the birth of Alice. The only record I can find that is anything close to possible for that birth adds yet more confusion, because it shows an Alice Innocent being baptised at Skegby, Notts (4 miles from Tuxford) on 15 Apr 1632**, with parents Francis Innocent and Alice. This is ok, but when I searched for a marriage between Francis Innocent and Alice ??? to corroborate the birth, I only found one between a Francis WASSE and an Alice INNOCENT (in 1625). Can I assume that this isn't the right marriage do you think, or should I look into something peculiar happening whereby the husband (Francis Wasse) for some reason took his bride's surname (Innocent) instead of the usual way around?!

** If this baptism is for "my" Alice, then that would make her 22/23 years older than John Warriner, who was baptised in 1655. This would explain why "my" Alice died in 1684, whilst John went on to marry again and lived until 1710. My imagination is now dreaming up a scenario where young John Warriner (age 22) is having an affair with the much older Alice Innocent (age 44). She falls pregnant and gives birth to Ann in 1676, and because he/they acknowledge the affair Ann is given John's name with the intention that they'll get married shortly after. They go on to have 2 more children in wedlock - Richard, in 1677 and Thomas, in 1683 (though this would make Alice 51 by the time of that birth). I'm not sure this is even feasible, but I can't yet find anything to prove otherwise?! ???

Is anyone able to suggest a date for this Railway man, please? I'm hoping that it is a particular ancestor whom I know was with the railway in the early 1890s, aged early 30s, but I have no idea of the date of this photograph. I've scanned both the front and reverse sides. Also any information on what his job role might have been, based on this photograph would be great, too (I have him listed as a railway policeman/detective).

Nottinghamshire / Laneham burial of Richard Warrener, 1772?
« on: Wednesday 15 August 12 14:23 BST (UK)  »
Is anyone able to tell me whether a Richard WARRENER (or Warriner) was buried at Laneham in 1772, please?

A member of Saxilby (Lincs) history group kindly pointed me in the direction yesterday of a coroner's inquest for Richard WARRENER who drowned in the Fossdyke at Saxilby that year, but I can't see him in the local burials despite it saying "of Saxilby" on the inquest description. I do have a Richard WARRENER of around the right age who was first-cousin to my Thomas WARRINER who lived at Saxilby in the late 1770s. I'm trying to establish if Thomas was at Saxilby earlier than I thought, and perhaps Richard was visiting his cousin there, from Laneham.

(I hope that make some sense!?)

Can anyone read the surname of the first witness to this marriage, please? I can see his first name is John, but can't make out the surname.

Lincolnshire / Lincs to the past
« on: Tuesday 14 August 12 12:04 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone else find Lincs to the Past infuriating? I've just about got the hang of actually searching the database now, but I find the size of the 'frame' in which you can view the original images far too small, especially on my laptop where I don't find it so easy to navigate around the image when zoomed in. They would be much better having a large 'frame' which fills the screen like Ancestry, in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I'm very grateful that the site is there, but I do wish it was easier to use!

I wonder who one would contact with feedback...

Lincolnshire / Saxilby St Botolph churchyard
« on: Monday 13 August 12 18:37 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know if there is a graves plan or similar for Saxilby St Botolph please, and does anyone by any chance have MIs covering that church? (if not, I know they are at Central Library but can't get there this week, hence why I'm asking here :)) I know that my ancestors were buried there in the early 1800s. I went to the church a couple of weeks ago and had a quick scout around, but then it started thundering and raining, so I had to give up. I think that the oldest graves are in the north east corner of the churchyard (at least that is where Mark Kirkham - short-lived wife and victim of Tom Otter was buried at a similar time, according to the Saxilby history books).

The Common Room / Whatever happened to John Hindle?
« on: Monday 13 August 12 16:28 BST (UK)  »
I've solved a mystery this morning - hurrah! I had two additional grandchildren with a surname that didn't fit into my tree, but found out that their mother (who I did have in my tree) had been married twice, and it was the first marriage (and therefore the children) that I didn't know about.

However, this has - as usual for me - thrown up another mystery.

Doris Ruth BRIMICOMBE m. (1) John HINDLE Jan/Feb/Mar 1918 at Mansfield, Notts
                                               --- Jack W. HINDLE b. Jul/Aug/Sep 1918 at Mansfield, Notts
                                               --- ***** * HINDLE b. Oct/Nov/Dec 1919 at Mansfield, Notts
                                    m. (2) Albert E. TUCKER Oct/Nov/Dec 1927, Derby.

I know this isn't a great deal to go on, but I can't seem to find any further reference to John HINDLE. I assumed (perhaps wrongly; I don't know how divorce worked in the 1920s) that he had died between 1919 and 1927, but can't find an entry of death. I've also looked on the 1911 census, and for a birth record, and I can't find anything to help me. There are a lot of John HINDLEs in Lancashire, but so many so that I can't hope to be able to say for certain that one of them is the one I'm looking for without any further information (a year of birth would be nice, for example).

Does anyone perhaps have any suggestions about where I can go next, please..?
