Armed Forces / Walter BRUCE photo
« on: Thursday 14 September 17 23:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi -  Can anyone identify this uniform?  Can you read the shoulder badge?  Photo taken 1914-1922.  Not also the fabric tape above his breast pocket which appears to have ink numbers on it as if it was a temporary badge.

This is Walter BRUCE who married Florence Edith HOWES in 1919 in Canterbury.  Walter was from Easenhall, Warks.
Thank you for any assistance,
Tom

Somerset / Wells Vicar's Close
« on: Monday 11 November 13 21:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hello -
I trying to find an address in Vicar's Close in Wells SOM - in particular#2.   I was able to find #16 thru photos in Google Maps.  No. 2 was the residence of my Great Great Grand-aunt, Elizabeth GRANT, housekeeper for Rev James Coleman at the 1901 Census.

I have attached a map of the Vicar's Close.  Thank you for any help -

Devon / Topsham Exeter - residence address location
« on: Friday 19 April 13 01:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi - I'm attempting to locate the exact residence (door) in a group of residences around a small square  in Topsham.  My ancestor is at  Clara Place - 15 Follett Road.  The group of 9 units still exists and I have identified #1 (from real estate listing) and right opposite #9 (Google image).  This would indicate that the units are number 1 to 9 clockwise around the square, but I have found #7, #4, and #3 on the otherside of the road.  So I don't know the rational for numbering in this case, but since "Clara Place" is listed in the 1911 Census entry for my ancestor, I must assume the numbering sequence is strange. http://binged.it/15k7h1R and http://goo.gl/maps/ElIh5
Thank you for any help.

Gloucestershire / Eastbury in Gloucester
« on: Tuesday 27 September 11 21:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi -

I have found a reference to an Eastbury village supposedly in Gloucester.  More specifically associated with Stow-On-The-Wold.  As being "near" or as a "small town ... a few miles from here [Stow-On-The-Wold]".

I have only been able to locate an Eastbury in Berkshire which is neither "near" nor "a few miles from" Stow-On-The-Wold (in fact over 40 miles away).  I have checked Google Maps, bing, Ordnance and Old Maps to no avail.

Any help would be appreciated.
Regards
Tom

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Yelling Hampshire

I am trying to find a birthplace which is given in two census for a person as Yelling Hants.  I found one in Huntingdonshire/Cambridgeshire, but nothing in Hampshire.  Searching for this and variations ie Telling, Gelling, Helling etc produces nothing.

Thank you for any help.

Somerset / Yeovil - location of
« on: Saturday 10 April 10 03:47 BST (UK)  »
I'm attempting to reconcile the location of Yeovil, Devon as mentioned as the birthplace of Sam J. Benjafield c1831 as shown in the 1881 Census for Hampshire and that of Yeovil, Somerset.

While there are some Google references to the keywords Yeovil+Devon they are not helpful. Altho' one can find a few references to being born in Yeovil, Devon, but 99.9999% of references point to Yeovil, Somerset, including Google Maps and the like, as well as the Gazetteer.

Thank for any help.

Sussex / Photo - Sussex Policeman
« on: Sunday 26 July 09 22:59 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for a photo of Henry GRANT (2xGreat Grand Uncle) born 1835, Eling, Hants. By 1861, Henry, 26 years old, has become a Police Constable in Sussex. He has his own household in a cottage in the parish of Easebourne.

By 1881, Henry has been promoted to Sergeant and has moved to Horsham, Sussex at 8 Trafalgar.

By 1891, Henry is now retired and still living at 8 Trafalgar, Horsham, Sussex.

Would also like any photo of his contemporaries in the Sussex constabulary. between 1856 and 1890.  There is a publication that I am having difficult finding which may have references relevant to my ancestor.

SUSSEX POLICE FORCES: A Pictorial History from 1836 to 1986
by Neville Poulsom, Mike Rumble & Keith Smith
Published by Middleton Press. First Published July 1987

I am really interested in chapter 10: West Sussex Constabulary 1857-1967 (our time-frame is being about 1856 to 1890.)

Thanks for any help you might give or any suggestions regarding this matter.
Cheers

Kent / Bromley, Hawkesworth Road
« on: Sunday 02 November 08 00:08 GMT (UK)  »
I am attempting to locate Hawkesworth Road c1880s in Bromley.  Old-Maps show nothing near the old town centre.  Googling brings nothing to light except a Nat Archives reference to Deeds on property on the Road but not at #16 (the address of interest) - so it did exist at some time??

Thanks for any help.
