United States of America / England to Usa 1887 - any record of passage?
« on: Tuesday 24 April 18 22:26 BST (UK)  »
William Pashley born England 1861 was orphaned and ended up in Massachusetts USA.

I have him on census in England and USA and his death but no passenger list.
He had a younger brother but he died in England.  He married in the USA so presume he travelled there on his own?

Info from ancestry says he arrived Philadelphia 1/5/1887.  Would this be a usual destination?
Would he have chosen that part of the US or was it any port in a storm do you think.

Any help and suggestions most welcome.

Has anyone ever managed to get a response to an e-mail?  I have been trying since September to get some burial information using the main e-mail on the website and an individual e-mail of a specific person to no avail  :(

To explain further I went to a Heritage Open Day there and got talking to a gentleman who said he would get his wife to fetch the burial book for me to look at.  Unfortunately I was pressed for time so had to leave before the book materialised.

I have written a few times but no response.  The e-mails haven't been rejected that I know of.

Actually that reminds me I have written several times to St Nicholas Cumberworth but have never had a reply from them either.  Hmmmm  :-\

Any similar experiences would be interested to hear thank you  :)

I just can't get my head around "phonetically similar" versus "similar sounding" variations of a surname.

Can anyone explain simply what the difference is please?

Thank you

I stumbled upon this site which offers free photographs of gravestones and duly requested a couple but haven't received anything.

Has anyone used this service or know of it?

The gravestones are at Frampton on Severn.

Thank you.

Gloucestershire / Death in Gloucestershire but on Scotland Probate Index

Wondering why this would be?

Jane Pick of The George Hotel Frocester died 15 March 1901 Frocester.

I don't know of any links she had to Scotland but it says certificate endorsed by Commissary Clerk of Edinburgh.

Would it simply be administration in that more "local" courts were too busy?
Be interested to find out as not come across this before.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Looking for George in situ
« on: Tuesday 05 September 17 15:14 BST (UK)  »
Last ditch attempt to find my missing ancestor last seen in 1851 age 16 in Huddersfield.
George Hinchliffe son of James and Sarah born c1835 youngest of 9 (have traced all the others)
At 16 he was a woollen finisher man living with widowed mother and sisters Charlotte and Emma.

I don't want anyone to waste anyone's time looking on census etc (unless they really want to!) as have searched for nigh on 10 years and not discovered his fate.

Am visiting the area he lived and would be grateful for any suggestions to what I could try "on the ground" as it were as opposed to online research which is what I am used to.

Thank you  :)

The Common Room / How to find a recent death

Which site has the most recent death search please?

I'm looking for one (may still be alive not sure) say from now to 7 years ago.  Not found any newspaper announcement.

Wiltshire / Beechcroft House Kingsdown Road Swindon
« on: Tuesday 30 May 17 09:38 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone got a picture of the big house that stood behind Arkells Brewery?

Now demolished like so many other grand houses  :(

My father remembers it but not the name so I looked on census and the best option seemed to be the above name.  I know the road is now called Beechcroft but was Kingsdown prior.

Thanks  :)
