Wiltshire / How many occupations to the pound
« on: Yesterday at 16:28 »
My gggrandfather was an engineer/fitter in the railway and that's the occupation on all census plus certificates I have for him.

I know he dabbled in brewing beer as there are beer licences and in 1861 he is at a pub (but still down as fitter) but last night looking at a trade directory in 1875 to my surprise he was listed as a baker!  I know its him because the address is the same as the 1871 census.

This is the first whiff of baking I have come across and am curious to know how he carried out a, presumably full time, railway job plus did his brewing and baking at the same time.

Is it possible his wife did the baking and poured the beer?

Somerset / What became of William Whittle last seen Yeovil in 1911
« on: Saturday 11 August 18 22:37 BST (UK)  »
He was born 2 Sep 1893 in Stoford Barwick.  Father down as William Whittle mother Lavinia Parsons (but not married to each other)

In 1901/1911 William is living with his maternal grandmother Patience Ettery in Yeovil.
He is down as Willie Hann 7 then William Hann Whittle 17.

It's a little complicated with the names (Patience was married to a Hann and Lavinia was her daughter with Parsons as a family middle name) but that aside would like to find William.

Grandmother died in hospital in Bishops Lydeard in 1929.  William was not the informant.

I have looked at the 1939 using birth date for William but not found him.

Any marriage/death or other possible sightings gratefully received.

Essex / Stratford Essex - 1890 boiler maker
« on: Monday 06 August 18 16:26 BST (UK)  »
Straying into unknown territory here and probably a long shot but one of my ancestors who was from Wiltshire puts Stratford Essex as his residence when he marries in Wiltshire in 1890.

I was wondering where he may have worked as a boiler maker in that area, any big employers at that time?

He is home with family on previous census and emigrates in 1890 but this sole reference to Stratford is intriguing.  Sorry there is no street address or anything more specific to trace and I don't know how long he was there :(

Appreciate any comments thank you.

United States of America / England to Usa 1887 - any record of passage?
« on: Tuesday 24 April 18 22:26 BST (UK)  »
William Pashley born England 1861 was orphaned and ended up in Massachusetts USA.

I have him on census in England and USA and his death but no passenger list.
He had a younger brother but he died in England.  He married in the USA so presume he travelled there on his own?

Info from ancestry says he arrived Philadelphia 1/5/1887.  Would this be a usual destination?
Would he have chosen that part of the US or was it any port in a storm do you think.

Any help and suggestions most welcome.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Holy Trinity Huddersfield

Has anyone ever managed to get a response to an e-mail?  I have been trying since September to get some burial information using the main e-mail on the website and an individual e-mail of a specific person to no avail  :(

To explain further I went to a Heritage Open Day there and got talking to a gentleman who said he would get his wife to fetch the burial book for me to look at.  Unfortunately I was pressed for time so had to leave before the book materialised.

I have written a few times but no response.  The e-mails haven't been rejected that I know of.

Actually that reminds me I have written several times to St Nicholas Cumberworth but have never had a reply from them either.  Hmmmm  :-\

Any similar experiences would be interested to hear thank you  :)

The Lighter Side / GRO online search term clarification
« on: Thursday 16 November 17 11:02 GMT (UK)  »
I just can't get my head around "phonetically similar" versus "similar sounding" variations of a surname.

Can anyone explain simply what the difference is please?

Thank you

Gloucestershire / hidden heritage glos genealogy site
« on: Tuesday 17 October 17 11:52 BST (UK)  »
I stumbled upon this site which offers free photographs of gravestones and duly requested a couple but haven't received anything.

Has anyone used this service or know of it?

The gravestones are at Frampton on Severn.

Thank you.

Gloucestershire / Death in Gloucestershire but on Scotland Probate Index
« on: Monday 02 October 17 16:34 BST (UK)  »
Wondering why this would be?

Jane Pick of The George Hotel Frocester died 15 March 1901 Frocester.

I don't know of any links she had to Scotland but it says certificate endorsed by Commissary Clerk of Edinburgh.

Would it simply be administration in that more "local" courts were too busy?
Be interested to find out as not come across this before.
