The Lighter Side / wrong fathers name at marriage
« on: Saturday 10 February 24 16:31 GMT (UK)  »
I know people made up fathers names for various reasons but how plausible do you think it is for someone to mistakenly put the wrong name?

I ask because have long been looking for the fate of an ancestor and none of the possible marriages have the correct fathers name.

He may not have married of course but in this case his father died when he was quite young (about 7) so :-\

All comments welcome.

Essex / Castle Inn Stratford
« on: Friday 25 August 23 18:17 BST (UK)  »
I have a newspaper clip from 1890 about a “farewell smoking concert” given for a relative and another man who were leaving for South Africa.

Neither were local to the area, presume had work there, was it usual to give farewell concerts for incoming people to the area?  Seems a generous thing to do.

Would love to see what the Castle Inn looked like but without a street name is it possible to find where it was?

Not sure how old it is but it was produced by "Burmah" and was the princely sum of 5 shillings!

Happy to take photos if anyone is interested in seeing it first (no charge for it)

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Does anyone recognise this landmark?

Found in a folder of "unknowns" so can't really offer any clues I'm afraid.

Would love to know where it was/is if anyone can help.

I am happy to obleige to solve some brickwalls. I have experience as I  stumbled across many brickwalls myself, such as Denmark, Germany, France, England, Ireland, Scotland, Austria, Canada, United States, and Poland.

If I cannot solve them, I will provide you with as much information as posible.

James was born Yorkshire.  Only on the 1841 census in Huddersfield where he is 45 and a labourer.
He is with wife Sarah and children.

Occupation on older children's baptisms at St Nicholas Cumberworth 1816-1826 describe him as husbandman or farmer and place of abode either Cumberworth or Birkhouse lane so the family must have moved to Huddersfield sometime before 1841.

No baptisms found for the younger children 1829-1835

This is my paternal great great great grandfather but who were his parents?

Any help gratefully received.

Thank you.

Gloucestershire / Redmarley & Dursley area Glos
« on: Sunday 02 April 23 16:17 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have knowledge of these areas please?

I have family at "Upper Silver Street Farm" Dursley in 1939 and a probate entry from 1975 which mentions the address
"Green Gables" Redmarley

Am hoping the farm at least may still be in existence.  I remember visiting relations at a farm in that area when I was small but can't be sure it was that one.

Any snippets of information gratefully received.  Thank you.
