The Common Room / George French
« on: Saturday 05 February 22 16:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I’m getting really muddled trying to find out about my great grandfather and I’ve had such great help in the past I thought i’d ask here!
Unfortunately, George died when his daughter (my grandmother) was very young so we know nothing about him. My grandmother ended up in an orphanage and never discussed her past. Anyway with help from members here I managed to find his death certificate. He died in a workhouse in Southwark in 1929 and his age in listed as 42 and he was listed as a head plateman. It’s definitely him as his wife was the informant.
He married Annie Wilkins in 1924 in Southwark and his age is listed as 41. This is obviously different to the age on his death certificate, but again it’s him as his wife is correct. He’s listed as a hotel cook. His father is listed also as George French and listed as a collier and was deceased.
I found a birth for a George French with a father also George listed as a coal miner in 1883 in Oldbury Worcs. I’ve always assumed this to be him but now I’m really not sure! I tried looking up a George French born in 1883 and 1887 and there were hundreds of results, I don’t even know where to start! I wonder if anyone could shed any light and maybe see things I’ve overlooked (which is quite often the case!)
Many thanks in advance for any help

Berkshire / Huntley and palmers?
« on: Friday 07 January 22 21:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I’ve been looking up my great grandparents on the 1921 census and I found my great grandfather working as a farm foreman in “nanblood hill, Grazeley” although I’m sure that’s been transcribed incorrectly. Anyway my great grandfathers employer is listed as “Mr. Alfred Palmer esq gentleman.” I’ve looked up that name and found out he was part of the Huntley and palmer biscuit dynasty. It’s got me thinking would it be possible that my great grandad grew wheat or another crop for the biscuit factory? I’ve tried looking but could only find suppliers overseas.
Many thanks

Occupation Interests / LPWR
« on: Thursday 06 January 22 21:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all!

I’ve been looking at my great grandfathers entry in the 1921 census and his occupation is listed as a general labourer with the employer listed as LPWR. Would anyone have any idea who they are? I’ve had a look and found nothing. His daughter once told me he worked on the railways so it could possibly be that. Many thanks in advance

World War One / Help with rank and regiment
« on: Wednesday 11 November 20 23:13 GMT (UK)  »
I have in my possession this photo and I’m ashamed to say I know nothing about it apart from my great aunt saying he used to lead the troops in parades? I have no idea what regiment or rank he is, I do have a vague guess who he could be, so any help identifying him would be much appreciated. He does look very grand though!

World War One / Middlesex regiment postcard

I found this postcard amongst my great grandmothers things and thought I’d share. I’m not sure if it’s quite a common item or not?

Armed Forces / Edward James Robinson regiment help
« on: Tuesday 10 November 20 12:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi!
I am struggling to find any records of my great grandfathers service (although I’m aware they may not even exist anymore) I have found an entry which may be a possibility. I am unaware which regiment he was in and it might help to locate him if I knew that. I know it’s not the best photo (although the original) but I was wondering if anyone would be able to see any clues as to what regiment he was in? I can see something on his shoulder but it’s not very clear!
Many thanks in advance for your help

Albert b. 1895 (married Ada)
Emma b. 1898
Arthur b. 1904
Elsie b. 1906

They are all listed as being born and living in Forty Green, Bucks in the 1911 census. I am descended from the oldest son Joseph (William).

Armed Forces / WWI (?) uniform help
« on: Sunday 08 November 20 17:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi!

I am very lucky to have in my possession many photos of relatives that served in the First World War. Unfortunately I have no idea who most of them are. I’m slowly but surely working through them all to try and identify them and I think I may be onto something with this. I have two questions.
Firstly I believe the men to be the same person would you all agree?
Secondly I was wondering if that is in fact a military uniform he is wearing? It’s the only one I have of someone in shorts! Any help at all trying to identify the man would really help. Many thanks in advance for you time.

Hi!

I was wondering if anyone would be so kind as to help me tidy up this photo of my great grandfather. Someone had drawn medals on which bothers me the most, but anything else anyone can do is a bonus!
Many thanks in advance for your help!
Daniel
