England / Annie BROOKS any information please
« on: Sunday 18 April 10 00:59 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find information on Annie BROOKS, my GGrandmother.

I have only been able to find her estimated DOB at 9 Jul 1854 from the Census of 1891, and her marriage to George STOPPS at Watlington in 1874.

Her death I think was between 1920 -30.

I have searched Ancestry and LDS IGI but no success

Can anyone help with more information?

Many Thanks

Can anyone with the CD for Rookwood please look up to see if Launcelot STOPPS is listed.

I know he was born in Aston Rowant in 1828 and came to Australia on the "Canton" in 1848 aged 20.

However in NSWBDM I can only find his death listed as 1910 at Granville. Maybe he didn't get married and have any children but I find that hard to believe.

I was hoping to find more information from the Rookwood records.

Many thanks

Australia Lookups completed / COMPLETED who is Arabella MINTON? COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 20 May 09 10:39 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me trace the parents of Arabella Georgina MINTON, who I believe was born in VIC in 1874 and died in Liverpool NSW abt 1954.

She also married a William F SHEPHARD in abt 1893.

I have looked in NSW BDM, VIC PROV, and of course Ancestry. and IGI with no success as the last two have a large number of matches.

Are there any other databases I can view with fewer matches?

« on: Monday 18 May 09 12:19 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me to get an Irish Birth certificate before 1837?

I can only get one on line at the GRO if it is after 1837.

I am trying to find a Thexter Mcauley who came to Australia when he was 10 years old on board the Ann MILNE with his mother and father, Christopher & Elizabeth Mcauley in 1842. His birth date should be about 1831.

Many thanks

The Common Room / Three surnames from one?
« on: Tuesday 12 May 09 06:08 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to work out why the children of a marriage have three surnames, two different from the parents?

I am looking at a Family Tree for STOPPS - STAPP on Ancestry and have found the following

The children of John STAPP b 14 Dec 1718 and Ann JUSON b 19 Feb 1715 are :

Thomas STOPS b 19 Oct 1746 at Wendover who married Mary PARKER b 26 Sep 1743.

Sussanah (Eliz) STAPP b 15 Sep 1751 at Newport Pagnell who married Thomas GILES.

Mary STOP c 27 Mar 1748     and

John STAPP b 2 Aug 1752 at Newport Pagnell.

I could understand if the surnames were changed at one date, but the name changes for each child?

Can anyone explain if this is possible and why? If it is OK then I have a permanent change of surname going back past about 1700 from STOPS to STAPP.

Thanks

COMPLETED  I have a birth certificate for my grandmother Elsie Annie WOODLEY - she was born in 1882.

On the certificate under column 5 - "Name, surname and maiden name of mother" it has these details:-

"Annie Woodley late Clegg formerly Childs"

now my grandmothers maiden name was Woodley, but I'm not sure what is meant by "late" and "formerly" for her mother?

Can anyone please explain these terms?,

Many thanks

I have found my early Victorian ancestors listed as Miners in and around Kyneton and Castlemaine in VIC.

Can anyone advise me how and where I could find information about our early, ie mid 1850's, miners in this area.
