Canada Lookup Request / Dand deaths in Quebec
« on: Saturday 12 August 17 02:22 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the death records for John Oliphant Dand and his wife Catherine Dand nee Smith who I believe passed away between 1941 and 1949 in Montreal, Quebec.

Daughter Mabel Smith died in 1941,was buried at  Howthorpedale with "John Dand" a witness on the burial so John was still alive then.  A family photo, possibly taken in 1943, (which I am dating knowing the family was together in Montreal before my father entered the Royal Canadian Navy Air Force), shows John and Catherine with their daughters Jessie, Ethel, Catherine and (I think) Margaret, Mabel being already deceased. I am basing the date on the suit my grandmother Catherine is wearing (in other photos) so this photo is either 1943 or 1941 before Mabel passed away.  I am unable to positively identify Mabel or Margaret in any photos I have so this is a problem.

I have found marriage records for daughters Jessie and Ethel and obits in the Ottawa paper for their husbands deaths so there are records of this family.  I have a family photo showing Catherine Smith Dand in Montreal captioned the "winter of 1947-48".  With no photo of John Dand I am assuming he has already died. There was a family wedding in September 1948 in Mount Royal but no photos including Catherine, a bit unusual as it was the wedding of her oldest grandson.  But I have been unable to find any record of her death during this period.

John was born in 1868 in Auchtermuchy, Fife, while Catherine Smith was born in 1867 in Aberdeen and arrived in Canada with their family, (Matthew George, Margaret, Catherine, Jessie, Ethel,Mabel) in 1912 settling in Montreal area. Any information or suggestions/leads of where to look for their death records is greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Jo

Armed Forces / What does "3VBGA" stand for?
« on: Monday 27 October 14 20:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Board,
Alexander Milne signed with the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Forces in Victoria, Canada on Mary 25, 1915.  Under prior experience he shows "5 years 3VBGA".   I think the first part is 3rd Volunteer Battalion but cannot figure out what the GA might stand for.

In 1901 Alexander was at home in Cruden, Scotland.  His 3 children were born in British Columbia after 1912 although I have not found a marriage for him nor his whereabouts in 1911.  His wife, Florence Deacon, was born in Brighton UK but arrived in British Columbia with her parents from Australia.  I am hoping once I understand what "3VBGA" represents that I can find him between 1901 and 1912.

Thank you,
jo

Kinross-shire / Hoys in Kinross
« on: Monday 28 January 13 23:59 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching the Hoy family and although Kinross is a small county (and this a small board!), there are a lot of Hoys in the area and surrounds.  At the moment I do not have enough conclusive information to connect my branch to other Hoy families.  I have tried to work through the Portmoak microfilms but found little extra information (from IGI) recorded by the cleric which would help in identifying families.  I found them a difficult read.  Is there any other information locally that might assist? or information from other researchers to assist. Have I missed a resource?

This is what I have for my branch (along with a tree on A**)
James Hoy born abt 1750 married Eupham Webster about 1770. Children, per IGI, were all christened Portmoak: 1.Mezdry b. 1771, 2.David b. 1772, 3.Thomas b. 1775, 4.John b. 1778

Thomas (b 1775) married Margaret Henderson on 5 Dec 1802 Aucherderran.  Children (per IGI), all christened Auchterderran, Fife were: Mary 1803, Euphan 1804, Euphemia 1805, James 1810.  Mary married James Swan 23 Jan 1826 Dalgety Fife.  Euphemia married John Roxborough 12 Aug 1825 Burntisland.  James married Margaret Hutcheson 31 Dec 1835 Gorbals, Glasgow.

Children of James & Mgt Hutchison, all born Glasgow were: Thomas 1836, Catherine 1838, Margaret 1840, Hutchison 1841, Magdalene 1844, Mary 1848, James 1850, John 1855. The family can be found in the 1841 Census and subsequent ones in Glasgow.

Son Thomas (b.1836) married Isabella Meiklejohn in 1862 in Tradeston, Glasgow. Their daughter Jessie Meiklejohn Hoey married James McGown in 1888 at Walton on the Hill, Lancashire, England.  James is my great-grandfather and shortly after the 1891 census James & Jessie relocated to Vancouver, Canada.

The IGI show hundreds of Hoy/Hoey entries in Kinross and I have tried to follow some in an attempt to establish connections and perhaps find parents for James who married Eupham Webster.

An early IGI entry is George Hoy married to Isobel  Meldrum 1688 in Cleish.  Recorded children are Isobel 1704 and David 1707, so possibly other children between 1688 and 1804, who were not baptised.

Another entry that caught my attention was this one:  Peter Hoy married Bessie Arnot  in 1710 in Cleish.  Recorded children, all baptised Cleish, are 1. Christian 1712, 2. George 1713, 3. Isobel 1715, 4.Ebenezer  1718, 5.Andrew 1720, 6.John 1723, 7.Janet 1727, 8.Edward 1729, 9.Bessie 1731.  If Peter & Bessie followed the Scottish naming tradition then parents could be Christian ? and Ebenezer Arnot and George Hoy & Isobel Meldrum with Peter’s unrecorded birth about 1690 making him of marriageable age in 1710.

So using the naming tradition and continuing to look for a father (possibly named David) for my James Hoy (married to Eupham Webster) the only David is the son of George & Isobel Meldrum born in 1707.  The only marriage I could find on the IGI is that of David Hoy to Ann Hoy in Portmoak in 1737 however I have been unable to establish any children for this couple.

So, all unsubstantiated theories aside, at this point I feel I have to be satisfied that I have done as much as I can and be happy with James Hoy and Eupham Webster being the roots of my tree.

Australia Lookups completed / John MEIKLEJOHN - Glasgow to Melbourne COMPLETED
« on: Thursday 15 April 10 23:58 BST (UK)  »
This is my first experience with Australian records and I am hoping someone may be able to tell me what happened to John Meiklejohn who arrived as an unassisted passenger in Melbourne, Australia 9 Dec 1856 aboard the ship “Royal Charter” aged 55.

John was born in 1801 in Glasgow to parents William Meiklejohn & Isobel Scott.  He married Janet McDougal and had 2 daughters, Janet b 1833 and Isabella b. 1838. The 1841 and 1851 Census show the family living in Barony, Glasgow with John’s occupation being a Cartwright & Joiner.

On 25 Sep 1856 John left his wife in Glasgow bound for Australia.  According to Janet’s Parochial Relief Application in 1862 “he has sent her no assistance and …she has not been able to pay her rent and gets no assistance from her children”.  Janet died in 1878 in the Barnhill Poorhouse, Glasgow.

Given John’s age of 55 at the time I wonder if the trip was too much, perhaps he died in an accident or perhaps he decided to start a new life or even a new family??

The Parochial Relief Application also says that daughter Janet “married a Foreigner and went to Australia” but I have not yet figured out who she married nor found a possible immigration record.

Thanks for any help to answer my question about what happened to John.

Dumfriesshire / Looking for a 1980 obituary, suggestions pls
« on: Wednesday 03 March 10 20:58 GMT (UK)  »
I am hoping to find a 1980 obituary to close the chapter, so to speak, on any possible children or surviving family.  I found the family on the 1911 Irish Census so it has taken a while to find a death in Scotland.  The death occurred at the Royal Infirmary in Dumfries and the residence of the time was shown as Ecclefechan.  The Death Cert does indicate a spouse and the informant was a friend.

I did request a search at the Dumfries & Galloway Library and the kind archivist searched the Dumfries & Galloway Standard, the Annandale Herald and the Moffat News for a 2 week period after the death with no results.

Does anyone have any other suggestions of local papers or do I just assume that there was no obituary for this individual?

Any thoughts/suggestions appreciated.

I am hoping that someone could provide me with an e-mail address for the Belfast City Cemetary.  I have just discovered 2 ancestors who are likely buried there and would like to confirm this however other than a phone number on the city websiste, I have not been able to find any e-mail address.  I am in the US so e-mail would be more efficient than phoning.  A relative will be visiting Ireland in May and would like to follow up on family related sites so we are trying to plan ahead.

Many thanks,
Joellen

Lanarkshire / Janet & John Meiklejohn - finishing info needed
« on: Thursday 04 February 10 21:15 GMT (UK)  »
John Meiklejohn b. 10 Apr 1801 in Barony, Lanark married Janet McDougal 6 Jun 1828 in Glasgow.  They had 2 daughters, Janet b 1832 and Isabella b 1838 both in Glasgow per the Census.  In 1841 the family is residing at Hilland in Glasgow and in 1851 at 72 Waterloo Street, Glasgow.

In 1861 Isabella is working in a shoe shop in Dumbarton and in 1862 marries Thomas Hoey and they move to West Derby, Liverpool. I have found her on all succeeding English Census.

I have several entries from SP to track down and find Janet as a married woman as I saw no matching deaths during the interim.

In 1861 mother Janet is at 72 William Street, Anderston, Glasgow.  Although she is shown as Head, her occupation is "Joiners Wife".  I have been unable to find any record of her husband John in 1861 nor have I found a death on SP which fits after several tries and credits spent.

Janet dies in April 1878 at the Barnhill (think that is correct) Poorhouse outside of Glasgow.  I have not found an entry yet for her in the 1871 Census.

Any help in finding Janet in 1871 would be appreciated and maybe other suggestions of search parameters so I can find John also.

Thanks,
Jojo
