Lancashire / St Paul, Walkden

I went for a walk round the graveyard today because the weather was nice and I only live 5 mins away. I am absolutely disgusted with the church/ council over the state of this graveyard.
It looks very nice from the A6 but as soon as you go round the side and the back out of 'public' view it is an absolute mess. Just thought I'd let anyone know who plans to find any graves here.
You need a steady foot and alot of the graves are tipped over and not easy to read due to overgrown vegetation.
Alot of the grave stones have been moved to build some houses in the middle of the grave yard at the rear of the church.

Sorry for my rant but it just annoyed me the state of it

Lancashire / The Amalgamated Chimney Sweepers Society

I am looking for any records on the above society as I have just got a book called British Chimney Sweeps by Benita Cullingford and it mentions this society which was started by Manchester and Salford Chimney Sweeps.
Acording to the book the society took part in the City Trades Procession on Saturday 15th Sept 1877.

I have emailed Working Class Movement Library, Salford Local History Library, Manchester County Records Office and Chethams Library to see if they have any information.

Can anyone else point me in the right direction or have anymore information?

Lancashire / st john the evangelist - Pendlebury/ Irlam o'th Height

I recently went to St John at Irlam o'th Height to find some family graves as my gran had mentioned alot of her family were buried there.
I had a look through the grave stones at the rear of the church and found one but when I spoke to my gran she said the grave yard used to be full.

Does anyone know where I can find any monumental Inscriptions of the graveyard before it was grassed over?

Lancashire Lookup Offers / Salford Local History Library

I am going to Salford Local History Library tomorrow to look at the MI's for Weaste Cemetery.

I take photo's of the entrys because it is quicker and less likely of mistakes.

Last time I was there, there was also MI's for St Mary, Eccles and Wesleyan Methodist, Barton and some others that I can't recall.

Anyone want any look ups whilst I'm there just post a reply on here

Lancashire / Egerton/ Nightingale

I am looking for more info on Sarah Nightingale (abt 1817- 1866) and Thomas Egerton (abt 1817- ?)

They had 9 children and most of them are baptised at Manchester Cathedral.

I have got her maiden name from her daughter Ellens (1845-1870) birth certifcate.

I think I have found the marriage on familysearch in 1835 in Prestwich.
It doesn't state parents for either of them and want to trace Sarah & Thomas further back

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Lancashire / Thomas Lewis- He is driving me crazy!!!

Can anyone help me or point me in the right direction?
I am looking for the baptism for Thomas Lewis so I can take this side of the tree further back. I have tried loads of things to no avail. If anyone can point me in the right diection I will be eternily grateful.

Heres the info I have

Thomas Lewis Born 1833/4 in Salford/Manchester (depends on the census)
He married Margaret Greenhalgh 5th June 1853 at St Philips Church Salford
He stated his father was Frederick Lewis a Spinner.
The witnesses were Frederick Lewis and Mary Ann Lewis and the residence is Sidney Street
Their children were
John Thomas Lewis (1857-1926)
Elizabeth Ann Lewis (1861- 1947)
Sarah Lewis (1865-1868)
Sarah Jane Lewis (1868-?)
Margaret lewis (1871- 1876)
Thomas Lewis 1873-?)

Margaret died 11 Feb 1876 of Brights Disease and Thomas never re-married

Thomas was a chimney sweep. He died 12 March 1909 at 90 Bury Street, Salford and is buried in Weaste Cemetery.

I have checked baptsims at the following churches
Sacred trinity
Christ Church
St Phillips
St Matthew
St George (Hulme)
St Stephen
Manchester Cathedral
St Mary (Eccles)

I have Frederick Lewis in Street directories from 1850, 1853, 1863 in Sidney Street as a chimney Sweep.

I have checked the mariage at St Mary's Prestwich for Frederick Lewis and Mary Ann Chapelle in 1838
Frederick Lewis- of full age- bach- nail maker- 21 king street oldham.
Father James Lewis- Nail Maker
Mary Ann Chapelle- Full age- Spinster- 81 Back Lusson? St, Oldham
Father Jonathan Chapelle- Nail Maker

I have the death certifcate for Frederick Lewis from 14 October 1886 in 14 Garrett Street Cheetham.
His age is 79years and occupation Chimney Sweep and is registered by his son William Lewis residing at 14 Garrett Street Cheetham.

Am I barking up the wrong tree with Frederick Lewis the Chimney Sweep or should I be looking for Frederick Lewis the Spinner??

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Ann Russell (Devonport) Burial

I'm looking for the Burial of Ann Russell (Devonport) burial.
She died in 1879 in Spotland, Rochdale

Her Husband James Rusell died in 1914 and is buried with his third wife Eliza Rusell in Burnley Cemetery

She was born in 1851 in Irlam and she married James at the Methodist Church in Barton Upon Irwell.

Her parents were James Devonport (1817- 1891) and Martha Clarke (1821- 1872)- I don't know where these are buried either.

Wiltshire / James RUSSELL First Marriage

I don't know if anyone can help me.

James Russell was born 1834 in West Wellow in Wiltshire
I have him in the 1841, 1851 & 1861 census' in Wiltshire.
Then I have him marrying Ann Devonport in 1876 in Barton Upon Irwell and then marrying Eliza Russell in 1879 in Rochdale.
Then I have him in the 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911 census in Rochdale.
The his death in 1914 in Rochdale

I can't find him in 1871 census and on his marriage certificate to Ann it says he is a widower.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to his frst marriage and finding him in the 1871 census
