The Common Room / Finding an Adoption record after 1931
« on: Tuesday 05 October 21 00:45 BST (UK)  »
HI all,
A friend who's mother was born 1933/34 in Ballymoney has always said she was adopted.
Reading on the nidirect web site under adoptions you must provide the name of the court where the order was made.
Can anyone tell me how we find that bit of info.?
Cheers

Herefordshire / Burial place for Harriet Brabant 1862
« on: Wednesday 23 June 21 06:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I was wondering if it's possible to find a burial place for a Harriet Brabant who died the June quarter 1862.
Harriet is on the 1861 census with her husband.
The were living in the parish of St Peter, Municipal ward of Ledbury. Looks like Maylord Street.
Would love to try and find a burial place for her.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Sue.

Canada Lookup Request / Death in Ottawa after 1965 Alexander Lawson
« on: Saturday 15 May 21 00:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I would like some advise on where I would be able to find the death of Alexander Nicolson Lawson who died after 1965 we assume in Ottawa.
Alexander was born in 1913 in Scotland.
I have found Alexander on the Canadian voters Lists.
1953, 245 Waverley Street. Occ. plumber.
1957, Empress Ave. 118 Apartment 3. Occ. plumber
1958 and 1965 as 1957.
Alexander was born in Scotland I have him on passenger lists. He did go home a couple of times so I have checked the Scottish deaths he did not go back home and die there so we assume he then stayed in Ottawa and died there.
We don't know if he married but assume he may not have.
Is there any indexes of deaths for Ottawa after 1965 if so are they online? Also would be interested to know if he left a will.
Would appreciate any help.

Devon / Suggestions on where to next to find Elizabeth Radford
« on: Monday 26 October 20 00:39 GMT (UK)  »
Would appreciate some suggestions on where to go next with two ladies I am trying to find more information on.
On the 1841 census Exeter (see attached) there is an Elizabeth Radford or Bradford aged 20, born in the county and a Catherine Radford aged 35 not born in the county.
They are living in the household of the Roberts family.
I have proved that Catherine Radford along with the Roberts family sailed on the ship Essex to New Zealand 1842.
The Elizabeth Radford or Bradford I think may have come to NZ with her older sister Agnes Dust on the Blenheim 1841 but she came out under another name. Elizabeth Payne. She later reverts back to the surname of Radford when she arrived in NZ as we have her marriage to William Pote.
Unfortunately, NZ records such as births deaths and marriages don’t help reveal anything more about these two ladies, such as birth places etc.
One theory we do have is in a newspaper article found is there was an Elizabeth the elder and an Elizabeth the younger were sentenced in the Devon quarter session 1835.
Elizabeth the elder was sentenced to 14 years in Aussie, Elisabeth the younger was imprisoned for 3 calendar months Though Elizabeth the elder stated she had no children I wondered if she lied so her daughter would not be transported with her, though it’s just a thought.
When Elizabeth the younger is released from prison she then goes to live with perhaps an aunt, being the Catherine Radford.
When she leaves for NZ she changes her name to Payne because she had a prison record.
I have researched the sister, or what we have been told that they were sisters. Agnes was married in Ireland to a solider James Dust. There is a possibility that the family is Irish.
What I would like to try and find is anything further that I may be able to access in Exeter about these two women.
Would be grateful for any suggestions on any other records that may be of use.

World War Two / RAF abbreviations
« on: Tuesday 25 February 20 01:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,
I recently received my fathers service records from the MOD in New Zealand.
Though my father served in the R.A.F. in England during WW2. My parents came to NZ 1953.
I have his English R.A.F. records but the NZ records gave me a bit more detail.
Reading through his records I have managed to work out a few of the abbreviations used but having a bit of trouble with a couple.
Albert was in communications from Jan 45 to Nov 46 it has Technical Writer M.A.P.
Technical writer I can understand but the M.A.P. I am not sure about. Did it mean he drew maps. or does M.A.P. have some other meaning. I would have thought if it was to do with maps they would have written the word without the dots.
Then Nov 46 to May 47 it has 7 ANS instructor. Anyone know what the ANS is please.
The next one is Aug 47 Nov 50 3 FTS CGI and radio instructor. Any ideas on what the FTS and CGI mean.
His NZ service record gave me a bit more info. than his English records. I didn't know he was in North Africa and also Malta. I am learning a few new things which is great but would love to see if I can explain the other abbreviations.
Many thanks for any help.

Lancashire / John Derbyshire Baptism Wigan 1828
« on: Sunday 09 February 20 02:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
I recently found a baptism record for my 3rd great grandfather John Derbyshire in Wigan 17 Aug 1828.
In the column which has his Christian name it has 2 John with the number 2 in front of John.
Has anyone had the same thing on a Christening record and what does it mean?
Could it be,
1, There was another John before my John and the first John died?
2, Could it mean he is John junior as his father is also John?
3, Could he be a twin?
4, Or does it mean he is the 2nd son of John and Ellen.
Gosh sounds like a question for The Chase.
Would be interested in anyone's thoughts on this.
First time I have seen it.
Cheers
Sue

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Birth lookup
« on: Thursday 30 January 20 01:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
Hoping someone might be able to help.
I am trying to find the maiden surname of my great great grandmother.
I have not been able to prove the birth of my great grandmother as her name is Mary Ann Brookes, to many to guess around the year of her birth 1852. However I have found the birth of her older brother.
His name was Lees Brooks born 1848 Saddleworth Yorkshire. Lees died 7 Feb. 1852 aged 3. Registered in Lancaster.
I have his parents James and Sarah Brooks. The surname is sometimes recorded as Brooks and Brookes. I have the family on the 1841, 1851, 1861 census in Oldham and Hulme.
Is there any possible way of finding a birth or Chr. for this child that just might give his mothers surname?
I have checked Find My Past, The Genealogist that is where I found the birth, and also checked Ancestry.
They also had another child called either Edda, Edd or Edola but have not found a birth for this boy.
I think they gave Lees his Chr. name as they lived next door to a Lees family on the 1851 census in Saddleworth. Perhaps they liked the name or liked the family. At least they were thinking outside the box for once.
Failing that I will bite the bullet and order the birth certificate. But thought I would see if anyone had any other suggestions or help.
Many thanks
Sue in NZ.

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Winster parish records
« on: Wednesday 22 January 20 04:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
Was wondering if anyone has access to the following registers.
I would like a copy of the actual page of Bap. for Thomas Broomhead Chr. 4 Mar 1798 at St. John the Baptist Church Winster.
I had looked the record up many years ago when I use to visit the local LDS but for some reason I never ordered the actual film to get a copy of the register.
The other record if there is one is the marriage of Thomas parents.
His parents were Thomas Broomhead he married Elizabeth unknown. They may have marriage circa 1780 or later.
I do know that Thomas and Elizabeth are both buried at the same church.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Sue
