London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Smith lookup please .
« on: Saturday 06 March 21 08:48 GMT (UK)  »
Arthur Smith born 1860 in Lowestoft married Jane Hill B1863 in 1889
1901 sees them living in Battersea with children Frederick B1892 , Daisy B1894 , Twins Harry and Alfred (William) B1899 all children born in Battersea .

1911 they are in Lombard Dwellings Battersea with now Edward B1902 .

But 1911 Census says children born 7, children died 2 . Who were they and when did they die ?

Does the 1891 Census give us any clues about these children .

Thanks Roy

The Common Room / Carl Lobeck
« on: Monday 04 May 20 19:06 BST (UK)  »
For many years been barking up the wrong tree on this man and new information has thrown all my research in the bin . Carl or Karl Ernst August Lobeck first appears on my research now as being Married in 1866 to a Mary Benjamin this is fact . He came from Memel Prussia or sometimes he says Luhmannsdorf In Pomerania near enough the same area . In later years he anglicised his name to Charles .
The first census he is on is 1871 in Falmouth Cornwall as a Ships chandler . I cannot find him on the 1861 census . I thought it was him on board HMS Cordelia in 1861 in Sydney Australia with the name Gusre as Gustave but research shows in as not being him . He became a Naturalised British Subject in 1873 . I know pretty much everything about his life post 1866 . He was obviously wealthy at the time with a servant or 2 .
What I don’t know is how and when he came to the UK and if he is not on the 1861 census then it narrows down to 1861 - 1866 when he married .
Any thoughts , can anybody help ?
Thanks Roy

Armed Forces / HMS Cordelia 1861
« on: Saturday 02 May 20 15:06 BST (UK)  »
Bit confused as I understood that HMS Cordelia was in port in Falmouth during the 1861 Census . My GGGrandfather was on board during the census and he was  Gusre ( Gustave )  Lobeck . Also found a report that later in 1861 he jumped ship and we know he married and continued to live in Falmouth .
Never been able to find out where he joined the ship , and why he was on a British warship seconded to the Australians as he was from Pomerania in Prussia .
Recently found a reference on a Australian site POI-Australia.com.au that gave a history of the voyages of HMS Cordelia and it states that the ship was in Australia at the time of the census and later in the year sailed to New Zealand . So yes I really am confused .
Sent an email of to the museum at Falmouth to see if they could confirm any details and they replied that they use volunteers to research so it could take some time. That’s all now put on hold .
So any other sources to confirm how the boat was in 2 places at once .

Thanks Roy

The Common Room / Adoption and change of name
« on: Sunday 13 January 19 17:21 GMT (UK)  »
Is it normal for a child to be adopted by his natural mother and her new husband on a 2nd marriage so that the child takes the new husbands surname . Was there any other way a child could have its surname changed to that of a stepfather without actually being adopted ?
By being adopted the child becomes a heir to the father , but a surname change only would that child still be an heir to the previous father ?
Thanks and Confused

Graveyards and Gravestones / Lobeck family burials
« on: Wednesday 03 January 18 07:32 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for any signs of any where a Lobeck may be buried I found only 2 .
Carl Lobeck was buried in a common grave at Falmouth Municipal Cemetery 7/10/1871 at 11 weeks old . It was in Unconsecrated ground .
However Annie Lobeck was buried in a common grave 11/5/1878 in the same Cemetery this time in Consecrated ground .
Who decided what ground you were buried in, was it because of your religion or cost . Again why a common grave again was it cost? There was talk there father known as Karl Lobeck  may have been Jewish although he may have moved away from this religion later in life. He came from Memel in Prussia also stated as Luhmansdorf in Pommerania. 99% of all Lobecks in the Uk are related to this man who lived originally in Cornwall and later in Monmouthshire but I cannot find any other burials.
Any leads on other burials .

Thanks Roy

The Common Room / Luvian-wade
« on: Friday 06 October 17 17:33 BST (UK)  »
Trying to help a friend out here trouble tracing anything about Luvian-wade family. Her father is loosely related to Albert Luvian Wade the famous rugby player that died in WW1. Albert was one I of 4 brothers born in Scotland, one other brother died in WW1. Albert was educated at Dulwich college.
The father of the 4 brothers lived in London with the 2 surviving brothers , trying to find any history of there descendants .
Can anybody help or provide any links to the history of this family . Free bmd brings up only one entry for Luvian Wade

England / Help needed on my early history on my GGGrandfather
« on: Monday 24 April 17 12:22 BST (UK)  »
My GGGrandfather went by many different Christian names and I guess I will never find out the real truth about him. Born 1837 ish in Memel Prussia , or Luhmannsdorf Pommerania he first appears as Gusre Lobeck in the April 1861 census in Falmouth on board HMS Cordelia the ship was seconded to the Australian navy. The ship must have been in Falmouth for a long time as in Nov 1861 he deserted he was then called Gustave. On the 1871 census he is in Falmouth and called Carl and in 1872 he becomes naturalised as Karl Ernst August Lobeck.

We know all of the above is true.

I have just found a record of a Gestan Lobeck from Memel sailing from Liverpool to Sydney on the ship Fitzjames as crew arriving Australia 5 March 1860. I think that is him going to Australia and that ties up with him sailing back to the Uk on Hms Cordelia.

So how did he get to Liverpool in about 1860 and is there any other trace of him before 1860. Anything before 1860 is a blank . Any thoughts?

Thanks Roy
